For this to really be successful, they would have needed to get a few wavering centrist Tories on board - and thought of a better name than "The Independent Group".

I don't see this ending in anything other than disaster.

If it's only 7 then Corbyn has a better reign on things than I thought and there may be hope yet.

All 7 resigning foes is torpedo their careers.

How likely are these seven to be re-elected running as independents? Is anyone from the Tories going to join them?

This is hilarious. Also, the speeches they're making really reveals the true aims of the people behind so much of the 'People's Vote' stuff- to use the unsolvable political situation of Brexit to exploit the internal contradictions of the Labour Party and weaken the Corbyn leadership, which is ultimately what these MPs are ideologically opposed to.

Fuck 'em.

Wait is this because of Brexit or an underlying ideological split? This letter reads as the latter.

Definitely the latter. Brexit was just used as an excuse to try and get the Labour membership on-side.

Chuka Umunna was a Tory anyway the spineless cunt

It's just incredible- he was an almost cert as Labour leader before the Corbyn era, and now he's literally resigning from the party. It's AMAZING.

Man... fucking Chuka Umunna. He was supposed to be the chosen one. He could have..should have been Prime Minister, but he shit his pants when the tabloids started ringing all his old friends, flames, and colleagues, then started digging into his past.
Instead of uniting the country, he's about to be part of something that will break it for a generation.

People scoff the number of MPs, but it's actually more than the four who left in 1981 to form what would eventually become the Liberal Democrats.

However that was 1981, and this is now, and people are right to question the efficacy of such a move (not to mention the timing).

Probably the latter, they are more opposed to Corbyns left wing politics than Tory right wing politics. Like many Centrists they will inevitably lean right to defend the status quo.
It seems to be all right wing leaning Labour MPs from the names I recognise. Basically the New Labour crowd, Umunna for example is a Blairite through and through.

Right, and might as well on the eve of Brexit banking on realignment maybe coming.

Yeah, but they were much, much higher profile MPs than any of these jokers, who are mainly known not for any political reasons, but for criticising Corbyn in the press.

If the Tories hold their nerve and don't have any defections this will be a disaster. I am not hopeful at all.

None of them will seek a by-election, which they would all lose. None of them will run again in their current seats, because they would all lose.

Instead they all plan to target various Labour / Conservative marginals at the next GE in order to split the Labour vote and hand victory to the Tories. No, this is not a joke, nor is it a bug. They are doing this in an attempt torpedo Labour's chances at the next election.

I hold them all in the highest contempt and wish nothing but failure and ignominy for the lot of them.

Yup, with words like regulated private enterprise they may as well just join the Lib Dems considering where the Labour party is at the moment in terms of economic policy. The idea of further nationalisation seems like anathema to this type of 'Labour' politician whereas the current leadership seems all for it.

Luciana Berger has been hounded by antisemites with no meaningful response from the party leadership. If you can shrug and say 'Fuck her' then you might be part of the problem.

Seriously depressing seeing him do this.

So glad these appalling principle-free careerists have finally left. It's clear how little they genuinely care about progressive change in this country, especially choosing to leave whilst the country is in such a dire mess thanks to the Tories (and the years of centrist style politics before the referendum). But whatever, they clearly had no place in the Labour party and can go crash and burn with the lib Dems or whoever.

Nearly a month out from Brexit and they think THIS is what they should be spending their time on?

Chuka is a coward that will never call a by-election, as he knows he would be humiliated.

They've just said they won't call a by-election because it'd be a distraction right before Brexit, but breaking away from the Labour Party isn't...?

Ok, so say they want to focus on Brexit, what does that mean? Are they going to vote for May's deal?

An independent party is going to do nothing to help this country right now. Also, enjoy a continued Tory reign even post-Brexit.

Labour is never going to win anything.

The racism against Luciana Berger has been absolutely disgusting. The fact her party has turned a blind eye to it - and even enabled it - is shameful.
