Yep! Since Cast Away. Amazingly, he was not nominated for Captain Phillips? Or Sully, Bridge of Spies, playing Walt Disney, and various other Oscar nominated pictures. I feel the Academy has taken him for granted.
I always forget how this works, don't the actors and directors and studios have to campaign for nominations?

Yes, the studios build huge campaings for actors and directors (and everything else). The best campaing wins basically.
Far from 100%. He missed the DGA. There's four noms locked, but the fifth is open, either Philips, Greta Gerwig, James Mangold or Taika. Or some left field choice.
Yeah...though I never really expected it to have a shot at Picture. It had better be nominated though.

Joker did really well in that initial crop of categories.
Shame about the J-Lo snub and Parasite not landing any acting noms. That will really hurt its Best Picture aspirations.
