I thought Pesci deserved it specifically because he didn't dominate the film. It was the complete opposite of his performances in Goodfellas or Casino, loud and brash and in your face. He did a superb job reminding everyone who remembers him post-retirement for Goodfellas and Home Alone that he has much more range than just "short angry asshole".

He was great in the movie. De Niro was too. Pacino was even better than both of them, granted he had the flashiest role. Really great acting all around. My only gripe is that Harvey Keitel didnt have a larger role.

Trust me - there's more to it than that, but I can see where you're coming from. Wright has a kinetic genius to his films that's almost Buster Keaton-esque in its approach.

Rick and Morty... what's the opposite of Big Bang Theory, but pretentious and unfunny? Yeah, it's that.

My most sincere recommendation if you really like that "kinetic" quality in an action comedy is to check out some older Chan stuff, you might like it. Definitely, definitely watch Wheels on Meals, its a fucking classic. Also the Taylor/Neveldine stuff, very fun in a similar vein that you'd enjoy

Brad Pitt in supporting is 100% category fraud but whatever. That boat has sailed when Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander got nominated for Best Supporting Actress when they have over 61% screen time
Or Hailee Steinfeld, the lead character of True Grit, got nominated for Supporting because she was a teenager.
All of those Joker nominations, nothing for Uncut Gems, Midsommar or The Farewell?

Literally the worst Oscar nominations of all time.
They're not even the worst nominations of the last 365 days.

Climax, The Last Black Man in San Fransisco, Midsommar, The Farewell, The Lighthouse, Waves, In Fabric and Uncut Gems are all 1,000% more deserving of nominations than stuff like Joker in every category that it's nominated for and they got absolutely nothing.

As a filmmaker and screenwriter, my childhood dream was always writing and directing something and winning an Oscar. Nowadays, I know that The Academy's opinions are worthless and these awards have no connection to the value of the art that is or is not nominated. It's the hearts and minds of viewers that matter and a nominee list this terrible in every regard is proof that award shows aren't a barometer for quality or worth. Safe to say that I can take comfort in knowing that I will never win an Oscar and yet, I will always be one hell of an artist and so are all of the fantastic artists who were robbed here.

I have! It's all wonderful - Chan's Police Stories and Drunken Master movies are some of my favorites. Taylor/Neveldine... I watched Crank once and that was enough.

Wright is different - it's more dependent on editing and dialogue, but the films just have cohesion and joy at being able to make that kind of film. The World's End is also a personal favorite for its thematic impulses too, so I'm a bit biased.

My biggest problem is that I think Wright's setpieces are generally staged well enough, but his dialogue just doesn't connect with me at all, so I don't care about his characters at all.

The real secret about Neveldine/Taylor is that Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is one of the nuttiest superhero films ever made and is a complete joyride but people were mad about it because Nick Cage is doing crazy nick cage things. It rocks tho

More power to you, friend. That final speech in The World's End is 100% one of the best things I watched this decade, but I guess Ghost Rider has its merits too. 🙃

Wouldn't that be nice?

Those are just some of my favorites from 2019 and ones that I had assumed were essentially a lock for nominations, the fact that they're all A24 is coincidental.

Films like Hustlers, Little Women, Booksmart and Knive's Out were largely shafted too and deserve more of a place in the nominee lists. It's basically just a year of snubs for women, POC and independent films. We're honestly lucky that Parasite got attention.
A24 fans are just huge nerds
A studio that focuses on small/medium budget projects starring women and POC, often in horror/thriller/dramas. They're not just the hipster flavor of the month like people like to pretend they are, they're giving largely unrepresented creatives a voice and platform to release their work and more often than not, it's incredible work. If loving their output and their studio's direction makes me a "huge nerd", I'll take it.

Plus, you're on a video game forum too. Welcome to the nerd club, chief.

I remember reading that Parasite was the one movie with which Oscar voters (at least from what one journalist had heard) struggled to find anything wrong. Every other film had knacks, but it took a perfect storm of a movie to break into a club that always nominates lesser films. I wouldn't expect to see more films like it in the future considering it took almost universal acclaim to make it this far.

I'm very happy to see that Knives Out got a screenplay nomination, if nothing else. That movie's writing and pacing is it's core strength, it very much reminds me of Hot Fuzz in that every single line of dialogue and scene is relevant and sets up for something else in the film, in both big and small ways (Edgar Wright slanderers be gone). It's also the first major crime film I've seen in a while that forgoes the Scorcese school of though (dark, gritty, very little levity) and embraces a more light-hearted Whodunnit tone while still delivering some good stuff on the social front. Probably Johnson's strongest film, I really enjoyed it.

Joker apparently being the most nominated movie of the decade is fucking hilarious. I wonder if the Academy was sick of CBM fans whining for noms and overcompensated by giving a bunch to the one CBM they could plausibly get away with doing so.

FYI, people are being cute when they say "most nominated movie of the decade".
Because that's true if you only count the past 13 days as "this decade".
The Shape of Water landed 13 nominations just two years ago. (Joker only has 11.)

You must be a hell of an artist to associate yourself amongst the ranks of all those film makers you listed who got 'robbed' of these 'worthless' awards.

As somebody who went through a divorce the idea that Marriage Story is not relatable because the characters are wealthier than me is bloody stupid. The drama is related to the personal relationship between the divorcees and about the kid, not about what they possess. To focus on the riches in that movie is soulless.

Never compared myself to them in a direct way. The point is that artists are artists and in the film community, so many of us at the bottom consider things like The Oscars to be the end game, a barometer for the success we all hope to achieve. My point here is that if all of these fantastic artists can receive no recognition for their work, that doesn't invalidate their art and it shouldn't discourage artists who also make fantastic stuff and will never see recognition from something like an Oscars or Golden Globes.

All artists should be proud of their work and the omissions this year helped me realize just how little any of this award stuff really means so long as the artists themselves are proud of their work. Nice try with the reductive "gotcha" though!

EDIT - I should also add that I'm not trying to be too harsh on Joker specifically, moreso the fact that it's inclusion seems bizarre when films that undeniably deserved a slot were omitted entirely across all categories. It's basically a "Crash" situation.

My apologies if this has been answered already. I haven't seen A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood . Why is Tom Hanks nominated for best supporting actor, and not best actor? He plays Mr. Rogers, right? Is the movie focused around someone else?

The film focuses on the reporter who is interviewing Mr. Rogers.

Edit: beaten!

Happy for Parasite.

Honestly, Robert DeNiro deserved to be nominated for Best Actor. Not a flashy performance, but he really anchored that movie.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Joker is a bad movie, but the Oscar love is baffling. How is that the movie with the most noms?

It's like a teenager saw Taxi Driver for the first time and tried to rip it off, plugged the Joker in, and completely lost all the subtly and nuance that made that movie great.

These film makers are celebrated household names or we wouldn't be discussing them. You think Willem Dafoe is discouraged by not being nominated this year? Greta Gerwig about to throw in the towel? No because in addition to being 'artists' they're also professionals who don't need to resort to hyperbolic sulking. I only thought Joker was alright but Gerwig apparently really liked it and probably still does even though her film wasn't nominated.

No attempt to gotcha; your lack of self awareness just made me smile.

I hope Joker wins them all

I hope it wins some for sure. Great film. I say this as someone that liked the A24 stuff more; I'm just happy when a good movie is recognized. And even the ones not nominated, have definitely found some shine through other award ceremonies, media outlets, and film communities.

Some of y'all need to chill out about qualifying cinema, because (as your own rage would indicate) this is subjective stuff. Not worth an aneurysm.

I'm not talking about these people and their reaction to their snubs specifically, their art was fantastic and deserved recognition but they will, obviously, be fine. It's discouraging for creatives who aren't your Willem Dafoe or Greta Gerwig to see fantastic work get unrecognized. My point here is that creatives should be able to look at these nominations and still feel proud of their accomplishments with their art, much in the same way that I'm sure Greta and Willem are despite them not getting recognition here.

I think you are misinterpreting my point here. The TL;DR version is that if a Greta Gerwig doesn't get nominated, it's clear that these awards aren't really encompassing the majority of the great creatives that released work this past year (there can only be a limited number of nominees, after all) but her work is still worthy and deserving of endless praise and recognition and hopefully artists like me that see themselves more in artists like Greta Gerwig than Todd Phillips don't get discouraged and see these awards as the only avenue for validation or recognition.

I'm not lacking "self awareness", you just didn't pull the right intent out of my posts which, of course, happens all the time on forums. No big deal but I've communicated my point and that's really all I have to say about it.

Recognising Greta for screenplay doesn't recognize her expert direction. And she belongs on that nom list more than Phillips or (this year anyway) Tarantino.

I've yet to see 1917 (seeing it Thursday).
