A New Hope is better if you watch ROTS and RO first

Somehow this movie from over 40 years ago makes a lot of sense having the context from these recent movies. Padme, Vader turning, the entire ending sequence of ROTS, Jyn Erso, and the Battle of Scarif add a lot of weight and emotions to things that happen or are said in A New Hope.

Yeah, Obi-Wan nostalgically talking about what a good friend Anakin was makes way more sense after you see him murder children and Padme.

I do think they did a spectacular job with Rogue One, allowing it to lead directly into A New Hope. You can totally watch the two together and it makes the Rebellion's efforts to take down the Death Star legitimately more impactful since you know what it cost them to get this far.

A big reason I hate the whole idea of the machete order is the prequels almost work against everything set up in the OT. Doing rots into ANH just doesn't work, at all.

A New Hope is the only real self contained movie in the series and the only one that can really stand on its own.

Without the Clone Wars show specifically we never see their friendship. We're told about it bia "hey remember when this thing we never showed happened" quips but the PT in general never builds their friendship. Quite the opposite actually, it presents it as very antagonistic outside of the first twenty minutes of ROTS.

RO was so bad I had to walk out and ROTS' edgy Anakin made me laugh in the theater as a kid. Why should that be the context behind ANH for anyone - especially if they were made in the shadow of ANH's own context?

It does if you pay attention to what they say. Obi-Wan and Yoda both said Vader killed Anakin, remember. In their minds, it was Darth Vader who hunted and killed Jedi for the Empire not Anakin. It's not really much different to how Vader words if himself, saying he killed Anakin Skywalker was weak and he killed him. Everyone seems to distinguish who Anakin was and what he did from who Darth Vader was and what he did, probably because the dark side consumed him and he wasn't the same person any more.

Yeah, their "good friendship" apparently amounts to Obi Wan shooting absolute daggers at Anakin all the time and constantly scolding him for being a petulant little twat, until the first 15 minutes of RotS when George Lucas panicked and thought "shit I have to make it look like these guys actually liked each other" and wrote them some stilted and awkward banter. Too little too late.
