I've own the books for a while now but never read them at all. Now is a good time as any. I start med school in July though so idk how well I'll keep up with the schedule.

I really want to read them again. Especially with the tease of next year for the next book and how the end of the show was handled...but I can't remember if I brought all the books with me when I moved house last year and I too cheap to buy them all again if I didn't.
Maybe I'll just read Dunk and Egg again.

Do you want a clout in the ear?

I purposefully didn't list Robert Baratheon because the show incarnation is so perfect already. Just make him 6 foot 6 and he is Book! Robert Baratheon walking out the page.

It's also why I decided not to include Varys and Littlefinger.

Varys looks exactly the same .

I debated on whether to include Littlefinger since Aiden just looks like an older Littlefinger from the books. Just de-age LF's actor to 29 and swap out the mustache for a pointy beard and you have Book! Littlefinger.
But in that case don't all the actors look like the book characters anyway? I mean I don't really get what you are saying.

Just started GOT the other day for the first time, really enjoyable after being able to visualise everything from the show. I've also got the audiobook from audible to listen when I'm driving or doing the dishes or whatever. It's good for the most part but I don't really like the voices he puts on for the characters.

Wherever
Might join in on this, have already re-read the series 30+ times so why not again :)

I'm currently working on combining Feast for Crows and Dance with Dragons into my own new version of the 4th book + possibly also doing some light editing to it. I already only re-read Ball of Beasts for books 4/5 but even that isn't quite what I want at this point in my fandom. Gonna streamline it more.

Not sure if this is worth adding to the OP, but if people want to know a rough estimate of the time commitment required for the first book it's ~15-20 minutes a day or ~100-133 minutes a week if you want to do it in one sitting.

The overall average for all five books is ~5145 words/chapter (1.77M in 344 chapters).

Individually (rounded to the nearest decimal):
  1. A Game of Thrones: 4082 (298k in 73 chapters)
  2. A Clash of Kings: 4657 (326k in 70 chapters)
  3. A Storm of Swords: 5171 (524k in 82 chapters)
  4. A Feast for Crows: 6522 (300k in 46 chapters)
  5. A Dance with Dragons: 5781 (422k in 73 chapters)
audiobooks average 150 wpm
average reading speed is about 200 wpm

Barring looking up shit on wikis/googling maps/making notes if we average about 5 chapters a week for aGoT, that's about 20k words or ~15 minutes a day reading(1h40m total)/~19m listening(2h13m total) - depending on your reading/listening speed.

Prolly need to ramp down the chapters for the later books or read faster.

I tried getting through the first book a couple years ago. I think this scheduling book club thing will help me out a lot this time around. Shit, I haven't actually read a book in probably over a year.

Can't really promise I'll contribute any commentary, but I love reading others' discussions. I thank ye all ahead of time.

If anyone doesn't have A Game of Thrones yet and doesn't mind reading digital books (and has an Apple device), I definitely recommend looking into the Enhanced Edition on the iBooks store. Has a lot of handy features, like showing you where on the map a chapter is taking place, and letting you tap a character's name for some context on them. Here are some examples from the prologue of the book:

There are also occasional illustrations of the events. It's very, very cool.

I'm excited to eventually read Fire & Blood. It sounds like it's really good.
Curse you, i bought this on the kindle app since i like the way that kindle lays out text but now i went and got this version for the maps. The kindle app does have something similar to this but no map stuff. Double dipping but that's ok, GRRM deserves it.

I read the first book around 5(?) years ago but never got around to the others, and I'm sad to admit that I haven't really done much reading in general the past few years.

Now that I've watched the entire series, I've been wanting to go back and re-read AGoT to refresh my memory and see if anything new sticks out to me, and then continue on with the rest of the books. So I'll definitely try to stay on board with this.

Take a shot every time he describes what a character is wearing in excruciatingly unnecessary detail.

If memory serves he stopped doing it some time around book #4.

Ha, I literally just bought the books moments before noticing this thread! I haven't read a book in years and was against the idea of starting this series before it is finished but all week I had been thinking about picking up the books. The show coming to an end helped I'm sure, along with traveling for work and the fact that my current hotel room has horrible internet and I cannot play any of my on line games (plus my PS4 not being my primary so digital games freak out w/o internet).

I'd love to say I'll follow the schedule but I'll most likely blast through them unless I hate them (yeah right). I'd love to check out the enhanced editions but the thought of reading on my phone is not appealing (Marvel Unlimited kinda tests my patience). I may check out that app or just look at maps on line. If I had an iPad I would totally be all over the EE though!

Ahh, fuck it. Had a $50 Visa card laying around from work and after checking out the preview of the EE I bought an iTunes card for the EE. I'll try the first and if it doesn't click I'll fall back on the paperbacks I ordered. The paperbacks were only $27 bucks so if I like the EE, I can give them to my kid or refund for B&N bucks, which my kid would love...

But, what a character wears is important and gives clues to their status and/or allegiance which they may not seek to be known publicly.

I think this could work for me. I don't wanna spend all my time reading Thrones so soon after the show, and have plenty I want to read besides that. Do people recommended the hardback or paperback for any particular reason?

I'm joining the fun. The show has pretty much messed up my memory of where the books ended up in ADWD, and I want to have a clear overview of the narrative when the next book is released.

I bought A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings a couple of years back, but my sister took those books, so I bought a compilation that had the five books for $40 in the Play Store last week shortly after the GOT finale aired. Started reading AGOT this week and I'm already at Bran III. I'm usually a slow reader but being able to visualize stuff thanks to the show and Martin having an easy to follow prose in general means I'm going through the book pretty fast. Having to read the books on a screen is not ideal but it hasn't been a big deal, and today I bought a physical copy of A Storm of Swords so I have that to look forward to.

It's been a fun read and I'm itching to dive back into the book. Despite the word count it seems I might finish these books faster than I did TLOTR which I felt moved like molasses.

I have the hard back dance with dragons ,rest in paperback. The hardback is an unwieldly beast. Feel like I always needs to have it splayed on the table to read, if you're a bedtime reader it doesn't work. If you settle into a nice recliner or something you'll probably be okay, but it's huge. Not to mention it's so many pages I'm always terrified pages will come undone from the spine. It's what happened with my Harry Potter books goblet of fire and on, also hardcover

Damn I'm really hooked and the reading is easy, wasn't expecting this. I'm heading towards Ned I tonight, for now the show is a 1:1 adaptation.
This is what I tell people and they never believe me. It is a remarkably "simple" read, the scale, themes and story are epic but the prose and style is wonderful and not at all "dense". As the anthethisis of that, I love lord of the rings but ugh

I will be reading along. Only doubting if I will read the Dutch translation that I already own or by the English set. Names and places are also translated and may add some confusion in the discussion.

In! I've been planning to reread it anyway since I forgot a lot, I blew through all five books in like 3 weeks the first time I was reading them, a more relaxed pace will be good. And I'm pretty sure that by the time we are done, we'll have Winds too.

Lord of the rings was my first fantasy reading and by far the tougher.

I am forcing myself to read them in English to be faithfull to the author intentions and to avoid confusion with the show that I watched in original language. Totally worth it.

So, i wasn't sure if i remembered this correctly, but:

The Other said something in a language that Will did not know, his voice was like the cracking of ice on a winter lake, and the words were mocking.

The Others do talk. I was expecting the Night King to talk in the show and i knew there was a reason lol. I expect Martin's version of the Others to be much more interesting.

I'm keen to join. I read the whole series last year so they're pretty fresh but it sounds fun following along with this thread. Just depends if I can dedicate the time to it and keep up. I'e like to read books other that GoT haha. But I am particularly interested in revisiting the first book

Yeah, I thought that was interesting too. And their appearance as the book describes it seems much more supernatural to me, especially after seeing this illustration of them. I definitely get a much different, more creepy vibe from them here than I did from the White Walkers in the show.

Awww that's a shame.
The World of Ice and Fire app is a nice supplement with (seemingly) a lot of the same extras from the Enhanced Editions of the books, and then some. Definitely recommend looking into that. It's available on Android as well as iOS:

Speaking of apps, another neat thing is the World of Ice and Fire app (I'm not talking about the book) for Android and iOS. It's basically an official encyclopedia for the series with all sorts of information regarding characters, locations, events, the various houses, creatures, religions, etc. It also has some very nice artwork in it, as well as interactive maps of the world that you can look over.

You'll probably find more information and all of the artwork by looking at things like the Wiki of Ice and Fire, but one neat feature of the app is that you can select which book you've read up to. That way, any spoilery information from books you haven't read is omitted, and you don't stumble upon something you aren't meant to know yet. Unfortunately, information from each book is locked behind a paywall, but you can purchase the whole thing for $4.99 USD, or individually for $0.99 each (except for AGoT's content, which is $1.99).

I dreamed last night that GRRM announced a release date for Winds... a dream of winter ;a;

I already started my reread a few weeks ago so I might be ahead a little but fuck it, I'm in. It's fun trying to create your own images of the characters (though sometimes the show's casting was so perfect I picture the actors instead, like for Davos).

Out of interest, does anyone have any fancasts for the characters? (ie an actor they picture as the character) I'm partial to Jessica Chastain as Cat.

When they find the dire wolf cubs Ned is telling the kids that the cubs may die no matter how well they take care of them. And Robb replying that won't die because they won't let them. Somehow Robb's reply echoes the unsuspecting reader believing that the characters you love can't possibly die.

Probably outside the scope of this thread but I actually just finished reading Fire and Blood. Which is a book GRRM wrote a few years ago that talks about the history of the Targaryens in Westeros. Covers tons of stuff and gives interesting context to Westeros too. Oh but it ends before you'd get to stuff covered in the other book that acts as a guide to Westeros. And well before the main books begin as well. So if anyone here is looking for a new book to read in the universe and hasn't givin it a spin. It's pretty worth it!

I should get in on this, need to cleanse my head of all the plot changes they made to the show that'd confuse me for the next book. Also, when I read people speculating on reddit etc I feel like I missed half the books or something, "We know that ser Bobo is actually Lord Flannister Bannister because his shield has the same motif of a hedgehog" etc.

You do hear the crackling noises in the show as they're chasing the rangers in the prologue. I remember reading somewhere that one of the languages they had planned for the show was for the Others. But it was cut.

I want to second a recommendation for those Apple exclusive enhanced editions if you can access them, I rather like them. I was a bit skeptical because they actually have poor reviews over at my local ibooks store, but I don't see anything wrong with them. They're handy!

I'd like to own the series physically some day, but I've got my eyes on the illustrated editions and those are still in the process of being released. They're still at A Clash of Kings I think...

Yeah, I saw your post on that before. I may try that but I Googled some info on how to read iBooks on PC and see if that works. If not, then I'll definitely check out The World of Ice and Fire app.

Having the Others being mute in the show, especially the Night King, is a powerful idea and make them more of a threat in a way.

When they find the dire wolf cubs Ned is telling the kids that the cubs may die no matter how well they take care of them. And Robb replying that won't die because they won't let them. Somehow Robb's reply echoes the unsuspecting reader believing that the characters you love can't possibly die.

I'm particularly fond of the line about Jon's cub :)

Isn't Fire and Blood supposed to be split in two parts, the second being published after TWOW?
