BACKGROUND:

With the launch of Steamspy close to three years ago, we have been able to examine the uptake of digital PC games in a level of detail that was never possible in the first decade of Steam's existence. Steamspy also dropped during a period of increased interest in PC ports by Japanese developers and publishers, allowing us to see the emergence of a new market for long standing console series and subgenres.

Following some earlier threads on the same topic, I began tracking the user numbers for Japanese releases via Steamspy about 18 months ago. I have been posting 3-4 threads a year on the subject since then, and have had a few requests to continue the series of threads here.

For those who haven't seen my previous threads on the topic, the aim of this thread is to provide a more comprehensive snapshot of the userbase for Japanese developed titles on Steam than you would typically get from random Steamspy threads. While I don't cover every Japanese game on Steam, you can find the past year's worth of userbase growth for about 300 titles from 31 different pubs.

This thread covers steam ownership through the Winter Steam Sale (including most of the post-sale refund period). Steamspy has a bit of a lag, and there is a daily variation in the reported ownership numbers for each games, so these figures are (pretty good) approximations only.

SOME NOTES:

1) All Steam numbers below reflect total owners on Steam, as reported by Steamspy on January 12th, 2018. For those of you not familiar with Steamspy, keep the following in mind:
  • These numbers are total owners on Steam and not sales through the Steam store specifically. Steamworks titles purchased on Amazon, Gamersgate, Green Man Gaming, the Humble Store, at retail, through key sellers, in bundles, or as promotions with video cards or other hardware are included in the figures.
  • The numbers are all approximate. If you go to steamspy.com you can see the confidence intervals for each title. E.G. 10.000 +/- 2.000 would mean 8.000 to 12.000 owners.
  • Some ownership numbers drop between updates. This is typically due to the old and updated sales falling into the same confidence intervals. If the ownership number increased or decreased slightly from the last update, you can assume no significant change in ownership.
  • Low selling titles (under 30k?) tend to be less accurate than higher selling titles. Because numbers are approximate, I have rounded all figures to the nearest 1000.
  • Steamspy has a lag of a few days. Games that were released within the past few weeks, or games that were heavily discounted over the weekend are most likely to be impacted.

2) I have listed games by Steam publisher with a few noted exceptions. Series with more than 2 entries have been separated to make comparisons between entries easier. Otherwise publishers are listed alphabetically and games are listed in descending order of sales/owners.

3) I know that games like DmC and Dead Rising 2 had western dev studios working on them. If a traditionally Japanese series had a few western developed entries, I included them for comparison's sake as long as the publisher funding the title was still Japanese.

4) I have tried to include all of the major and notable minor Japanese publishers/localization companies that I know of (the list below contains 300 titles from 31 pubs). If I have made any glaring omissions, post the numbers below and I will add them to the OP. I omitted a few series (like Pac Man) on purpose as they differ widely in target audience from most other titles listed.

NOTE: Steam has a billion visual novels. I have added some of the more notable titles based on requests in past threads. A small handful of these have been deleted due to no movement on very low ownership (<4k). If you are going to request more visual novels that even 95% of the ERA community is unaware of, please pick titles that have at least 10k owners. Also stick to games that received a retail release in Japan.

5) Free-to-play games, and retail games that have gone Free-to-play have been omitted. This means no Dead or Alive 5.

6) With a couple of exceptions, I left the Japanese indie scene alone. I am not knowledgeable enough to pick out Japanese indie titles from the Western indie devs making the same stuff, and I don't really think there is a meaningful regional difference between indie devs.

7) Thanks to Sergey Galyonkin for creating and running steamspy.com for all of our benefits.

Every time I see TitS SC sales I feel sad.

Tales games are doing fairly well. I think we can expect all future Namco games on Steam.

Nekopara vs Clanned shows that Steam VN fans have poor taste.

The game released some 8 months after the PS4 version and launch price was in the $50-60 price range. By then the PS4 version would've been on sale for less than that price. Factor in also that the game isn't visually the most appealing. That's not gonna sit well with all consumers, and even I didn't buy KoF 14 when it released.

GG Xrd Rev2 upgrade released a week after the PS4 ver., note that this falls under GG Xrd REVELATOR. REVELATOR got an extra sales push thanks to DBFZ's announcement.

Looking over the list, I'm seeing improvements in sales for the majority of games, even games that are pretty old.

EDIT: That Fate/Extella number is quite high. That fanbase must be VERY dedicated.

How the fuck does Last Remnant of all SE things have almost 1 million sales?
IIRC correctly it was included in bundles and/or was *severely* discounted during the heyday of Steam sales.

All I remember is that I was tempted to buy it at some point, & I'm not even big on JRPGs :p

I remember TLR being in the $1 tier of a humble bundle.

Trails of Cold Steel sales seem pretty good, it has almost catched up with SC in less than half a year. It still saddens me that they aren't reaching more people, but I feel the relatively high price might be the main reason they struggle so much to pass 50K (Cold Steel has benefited a lot from sales I think, but SC being significantly more expensive than FC I think its hurting more than helping at this point)

How did Magical Girl Michiru sell so much more than Grisaia? That doesn't make sense to me. Did everyone buy the 18+ version or something?

Also , It was one of the earliest Japanese Square Enix games on Steam , so that is an advantage for it

Damn, that drop from Dead Rising 3 to DR4, wow. Series is probably dead now, right?

Ironically , Okami in one month did more than DR4 in a year

Considering the number of unaccounted private owners as well as better awareness for Japanese games in this market, better sales across the board makes sense. For some companies, this isn't great because they're getting less and less of an advantage over competitors, let alone selling enough to break even and then some. Who knows.

Fate fandom's got a lot of whales, judging by the success of Grand Order. I'm not surprised a Fate musuo's done this well, especially since XSEED/Marvelous did a decent job marketing it and the PC port performs well on top of that.

Y'all sleeping on Xanadu Next. That game is straight fire. Its a fast-paced Diablo Metroidvania that nails pretty much everything.
Xananext plays closer to Nox if we're bringing up Western hack-and-slash influences...I should know a thing or two about the game since I made the GAF OT ages ago, lol. It's gotten a bit of popularity boost from streaming (EpicNameBro played it almost to completion, which he should get back to). I still don't understand what makes this game bring out some of the most obsessive negative reviews I've seen for a Steam release, bringing its average down lower than most other Falcom releases for no good reason.

CS PC had to compete with an onslaught of big PSN/physical discounts on the PS3/Vita releases, and XSEED did a piss-poor job of marketing the release even in the simplest ways (aka tweeting out the release date more than once). I hope they proactively market CS II PC and use that to shine more light on both games as an entryway into Trails. Durante marketing always helps.

Yeah, Namco is really killing it. Dark Souls sells so incredibly well. Capcom also takes in the cash. Nice to see Nioh selling well.

For people perplexed by Last Remanent: from what I understand the PC version is almost a completely different game vs the console version and apparently quite loved.

Dead Rising 149k
Dead Rising 4 73k

Will never stop being hilarious. Eat shit Capcom.

Souls games sell like hotcakes and it's not even close with the other games/franchises.

It's basically a PC franchise at this point. No wonder why most Souls-like games are on PC.

Atelier not doing well it seems...
Lydie and Suelle launched abysmally in Japan :( Despite some mediocre (Blue Reflection) and terrible (Nights of Azure 2) recent releases, I really don't want anything bad to happen to Gust, but things are looking iffy since those titles did very poorly too. Maybe Augmented Reality Girls Trinary was a success?

Those are depressing numbers if you ask me, many of those sales are lower than the average japanese sales of a Vita game, but we are talking about worldwide pc games, even the numbers of the bigger games aren't that big, barely 10 games surpassed 1 million and all of them only 2 games sold more than 2 millions.

700.000 copies in under a year for Nier Automata, close to 100k for Okami, and over 150k for NiOh (late port and no sale) This list is full of niche titles, 10+ y old ports and very niche stuff but yes, without any revenue numbers you ca say: "Depressing numbers".
Seeing the average japanese port and the no marketing, they really need a few copies to cover the already low port cost so your point is basically awful, every year we see japanese ports on Steam and you know why? Because they are profitabile.
And again, you dont need to sell 1 million copies to be profitable.

Dark Souls 3 is totally insane. The revenue on that most likely easily outdoes every other Japanese game on Steam.

Higurashi has benefited immensely from the bundle deals, which makes me happy since it's a fantastic VN.

If you consider both sale numbers and pricing, "Tales of" seems like the most successful traditional JRPG franchise on Steam. I think that's fair -- the ports of the new games are both good and released in time with the console versions, which makes a huge difference.

Nice to see most everything still gaining sales.

the Michiru games were part of a Sekai Humble Bundle in June 2017 along with Nekopara, fault milestone and many other games.

has SteinsGate been part of a bundle or similar lately? selling 100,000 in the last 6 months seems a lot.

I am very happy to see the Naruto Storm games getting some recognition on steam, with both 3 and 4 at over 500k

I honestly think they narrated parts of the Manga better than the anime did, and their in-fight gameplay is so much fun when you get into it, but the overall formula needs so much polishing to get rid of the mind-numbing repetitiveness in these games. Hopefully, we'd see a game that goes through the entire story, from start to finish, like the avalanche of Dragon Ball games prior to the Xenoverse ones

Something worth mentioning, these numbers can be off with games that had free weekend promotions on Steam, which is the case for Naruto Storm 4.

I missed the Nioh number before.
I think it is most likely already K-T's most successful game on Steam in terms of revenue, given that its current sales are without any major discounts.
I hope they take that to heart and note that releasing a game in a decent state and continuing to support it leads to increased success.

The fact that Steam not Xbox got Kof XIV and it did poorly makes me laugh.

What makes you believe that the game bombed on Steam? It's a 60 dollar release of a 1 year old game which also hasn't been given away in ultra cheap humble bundles like the other 3 games have been, and that also were released at lower entry prices.

In this thread some people are comparing the sales of the first entry with the latest and screaming BOMBA without taking into account lots of thngs

I mean, Raiden V selling 1k units is a bomba, but a 20k units sold in their first months seems fine to me, specially considering than most of companies don't consider PC as their main revenue

Sure buddy.
Sure buddy, just the first example that i found:

[PSV] Hyperdimension Neptunia VS Sega Hard Girls: Dream Fusion Special (Compile Heart, 11/26/15) – 16,941 (New)

vs

Superdimension Nep. vs Sega Hard Girls 21k 15k (new)

Steam number is higher... except that that 16k are the sales on the first week only in Japan only on Vita only while those 21k are relative to all the world on the way higher install base of PC on a longer time, and this without talking about prices and giveaways, i got Binary domain, deadly premonition and others not listed here for free, with a humble bundle that capcom made you could have bought many of its games for cheap, many of the games listed are extremely cheap and so on.

Obviously developers gain money otherwise they wouldn't port their games to pc, but again we are talking about worldwide pc sales, i would expect a lot more, most of those games do better on consoles with higher prices and smaller userbases.

The concept of niche games shouldn't be that hard to grasp.
They clearly get it but what you're not getting is that they are clearly making the point that despite being niche they expect the WORLDWIDE PC sales of a game over time to be greater than the first week JP console sales of that game. Which isn't unreasonable to expect.

Now that japanese games are commonplace on Steam it's much harder to get noticed unless you 're a big franchise. Some years ago a jp game released on steam was an event. Competiton is much fiercer now not to mention that discounts have somewhat caught up on consoles.
