First off, I have enjoyed playing video games an awfully long time, going back to the the eighties. The freedom to create your own memories, experience amazing worlds and play with fun mechanics have always drawn me in.
Video games have always been a solitary experience for me though. A safe space to unwind from the real world and get lost on adventures by myself. And I feel the industry used to create and market games specifically with that solitude in mind.
I love picking up a controller, playing a character, making discoveries, feeling a sense of accomplishment. All of these things are personal memories for me.
The world has changed an awful lot of course. Multiplayer and Online experiences rule the scene today.
I have nothing personal against these games. Many love to play with friends and enjoy all kinds of fun multiplayer experiences together. Chat online. That is great.
But for me, I often feel forgotten.
Single player experiences used to be the backbone of the game industry. They felt like they were made with me in mind. There were no online only games on consoles. No micro transaction, box loot, whatever you want to call it. The market has changed, and folks like myself are no longer the target market.
I say its bittersweet because even though I feel there are fewer and fewer games for myself to fall in love with, I love that the industry has grown so much and that new games are still bringing lots of joy to others.
I just feel like the kinds of experiences that I enjoy are ultimately going away. Not entirely gone quite yet. I'm thankful for From Software, and even Bethesda for now. But the writing is on the wall. I am no longer the target market. Even with all the new games coming out I just keep popping in old games and hack monsters by myself. As I always have.
How's everyone else? lol
