One of the crazy things is these folks are rich poor, they are barely in the elite. If they were at the top they would have just ask an old friend of the family or cut a check. None of this posing for pictures, running around getting testing sites changed, etc.

Strip all these fucking students of their degrees and expell their asses. Make an example of them. I'm sure Mama and Papa have millions where they don't even need a degree.

Considering how large a part this plays into admission, I'm just surprised there's not some kind of, I dunno, check in cases where ethnicity benefits the applicant. Like if you're applying to a UC school and you're Asian, and you put that you're black, they just take that at face value?

Most likely.

Mindy Kaling's brother pretended to be black to get into med school lol.

My handwriting is not great anymore but at least it's not that bad.
Handwriting that poor can often be a sign of dyspraxia. I wasn't diagnosed until shortly before my GCSEs (high school exams for US comparison). My teachers were concerned I'd fail all my exams because my handwriting is so poor.

Honestly, just make a rich kids school with accredited staff and teach said rich kids until they earn their degrees, even if it takes them longer to do so. Give them good tutors, expand resources available for them, etc

If the parents can afford it, just do that. Why would you need to go the illegal route :\
The problem is these rich fucks want something money can't buy: the status of having gone to these specific universities. If you just had an expensive school that would accept any rich idiot failkid, it wouldn't have the same cultural cachet.

If they were really rich, they'd have just given a few tens or hundreds of millions to the institution directly as a charitable donation, but not actually cut the check until after admissions were sorted. Obviously no relation between the two, of course.

Mindy Kaling's brother pretended to be black to get into med school lol.

stupid image.

Not most likely.

His "experiment" was misleading.

Vijay Chokal-Ingam, the brother of comic TV writer and actor Mindy Kaling, made a splash this week when he claimed to have gotten into med school purely because he pretended to be black.

The claim was part of a publicity campaign for a forthcoming book, Almost Black, in which Chokal-Ingam says he will use his experience to attack the validity of affirmative action. The centerpiece of this campaign is an image that suggests that Chokal-Ingam applied to med school twice: once as an Indian-American named Vijay (rejected), and once as a black applicant named Jojo (accepted).

Nearly every media outlet that wrote about the stunt prominently featured the graphic, yet very few addressed whether Chokal-Ingam had applied twice, and some erroneously concluded that he had.

But Chokal-Ingam told BuzzFeed News he only applied to med school once, and only as a black applicant.
The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) also confirmed that they did not have an application on file with Chokal-Ingham's real first name.

He applied to more than 20 schools and was rejected by all but one, St. Louis University School of Medicine.

In Chokal-Ingam's view, the fact that he got into St. Louis and received interviews at other schools is proof that he got into med school because of his purported race. But the fact that he only applied once means this was an experiment without a control: There is no way of knowing whether Chokal-Ingam would have been rejected had he applied without falsifying his race.

Yeah except he said he was black and they didn't check if he actually was. So yeah, they most likely won't check if you say you're black even if you're not.

This crime is nothing compared to the shady dealings happening in the job market where employers does almost the same thing in hiring.

Uh... what? Are we talking general admissions, or is there something where rich parents are paying off hiring managers under the table to get their kids jobs they can't possibly do?

Kim was originally reluctant to allow Loughlin to continue travelling to Vancouver for work, saying "I"m not comfortable giving her a passport for that kind of travel." But he relented and set conditions that she be allowed to travel as long as the court is aware of her destination and length of stay. Her attorney Marc Harris explained that she is under contract for two more projects in April and May as well as a series slated to begin in July, all shooting in Vancouver.
hey hey hey now, lets make sure this crime nonsense doesn't effect her future work we got set up

Fuck major universities / support your community colleges

You cant get the same level of education outside the major colleges. Maybe the bachelor programs are almost the same but, then again its mostly training kids how to understand the basis of their field of study. Once you get into the truly deep parts of education, the doctoral programs at the top research universities in the US are practically unmatched.

Imagine how astoundingly mediocre you have to be to require bribes to get into college when the system has already made your life easy mode from Day 1.

As Sam Seder put it, if it were like the old days these people would have donated a building or some other "large gesture" towards the university to get their kid in. Trying to fake your kids credentials is wack.

That still happens, it's just that this way is a lot cheaper and more of a guarantee. That's literally what the guy who did all this said.

Undergrad is the main issue here. Grad degrees outside of professional situations are not the backbone of education nor largely required. I say that fully understanding grad degrees largely fund research, though.

There are something like 4,000 2 and 4 year schools in the US. So many think only the top 25-50 are worth anything. But there are thousands that can offer an adequate and affordable bachelor education. Some may not be ranked high overall, but are ranked high in a specific field overall or may not be ranked but offer great outcomes for their field. And yeah, some are outright bad too.

Really a diverse environment to simply dismiss 4 year schools like that. Although there is an unhealthy stigma against 2 year schools too.

This doesn't really apply to these uber rich kids who have their own connections, but a lot of college is the connections you make and the relative "value" people put on your degree. That seems strange but it's not like you learn a ton of stuff in undergrad (especially the early years) that you couldn't via disciplined independent study. It's also why going to a smaller college then transferring into a bigger program makes more fiscal sense.

"Thank the merit applicant you replaced". Jesus Christ, fuck off with this shit. No one is getting "replaced" by "quota" students and it's really shitty to imply that they got in solely to meet a quota, as if a university with a ~6% acceptance rate is just going to bring in students with little to no "merit" to meet a quota.

They don't even have to go to school or work this is just a vanity trip from the parents, they know their spoiled brats have had it easy all the way up to high school and now have to scam their kids way into a prestigious institute so they can gloat about it at the country club. The tragedy is these kids grow up believing they are actually smart and so do the people that hire them after they graduate and get recruited to the top levels of corporations and government and so we have an entire 1% of greedy morons continuing the cycle and the rest of us have to keep scraping by. Look at Trump a perfect example of a moron reaching the top solely on scams, lies and crimes and the same continues on with his idiot kids and their kids.

There is a huge distinction between what colleges purport to do and what they actually do. Grad school still carries some of the philosophy behind higher education, but undergrad has become just extended high school.

Most 2-4 year schools teach you how to do things and maybe a bit of how it was discovered or why its important. You can get a bit of insight from a great professor, but the calculus and whatever you learn is the same everywhere. You are not being educated, you are just being taught how to do something. You pay for the prestige of going to a named university and to make contacts.

Grad school programs teach you how to do new things. In a research program you barely get any classes, its all about identifying a problem and coming up with new ideas. Law School and Med School go hardcore in depth into the minutia of the field, effectively giving you the knowledge that separates you from the rest.

After 4 years of mechanical engineering, how different are you from a physicist or a computer scientist?

Now that it's out in the open, any future idiots who want to talk about he "harm" of Affirmative Action and how it's unnecessary in today's "enlightened" and equal" society should be dragged. Shit like this is exactly why we need those checks and balances and more. Few weeks ago we just talked about how Trump hid his flaws in regards to his education and I guarantee he pulled shit like this himself for his kids. You'd be dumb to believe even just these 40+ people are the only wealthy people who game the system and make it work for them at the expense of others. So many people including myself have to take on debt up to their eyeballs and live with it for years while individuals like these coast. The US is fucking broken and it's insulting and pathetic to say otherwise.

Yeah I get that, but these kids weren't going in for grad school. Their parents just wanted the prestige. My comment on grad school was simply meant to emphasize the sheer student population differences and the fact only a fraction of students ultimately go to grad school or that it's used only for specialized professional/research purposes.

As for undergraduate training, that certainly depends on the school like I said. But that requires research, etc. For your Mechanical Engineering example, my school requires over a year and a half of full-time paid work as part of the degree. So those students get supplemented quite well on the true nature and preparation for their future jobs. Overall point being is there are schools that don't meet that "elite" threshold that do decent jobs of training their students. Now of course some majors may not lend well to "training" but that's just the nature of those major.

Have they outed the parent of the "Six Million Dollar Man?" I want to know how dumb the student had to be to get that rate.

For Europeans trying to get their heads around this, college is a class distinction first and foremost and for some people marks a Rubicon between working and middle class or upward.

An Ivy League education says more about your social status than your intellect - since quite ordinary, even stupid people can graduate from Harvard or Stanford with a meaningless baccalaureate degree - but the prestige of the "brand" is huge and will ensure everything from internships to crazy starting salaries. An outstanding engineer with a masters from an amazing UC is still at a disadvantage in some ways to a vacuous English major from Yale or some athletic-tuned degrees from Stanford etc.

You kind of NEED a degree to sit in the swollen center and while America has some of the finest schools on earth it also has wretched accredited real colleges - including Bible belt trash where evolution is forbidden.

Partly it's because there aren't enough trade skills training for well paying blue collar careers and partly because those careers aren't respected enough imo. A plumber or electrician in Manhattan can make a lot more than a doctor in Bumville. Not just an American problem obviously.

But a degree is not necessarily anything to do with passion or aptitude. Growing up in the UK - university certainly had social implications but poor people like me (80s and 90s Scotland) could go just by getting good grades and applying for the right assistance.

It's a different world now though.

Lori Loughlin's arrest is rocking the Hallmark Channel fanbase:

Loughlin's future with the network is uncertain, but they're surely going to have to do something. She has been instantly recategorized from the wholesome mom who's not overtly evangelical but appealing to "faith-based" audiences, to cheating, line-cutting Hollywood elite asshole. Comments on Hallmark's social media accounts include: "I hope Hallmark takes immediate action and does not air any of Lori Loughlin's series or movies. She taught her kids a horrible lesson."

This woman is clearly rage-typing:

Love Halmark movie & mysterious, however, I love my morality more. I'm sorry but Lori Laughlin MUST GO! She is a farce & believes she is so special that it's fine to cheat hard working legitimate children out of their EARNED right to go to best schools. It is unconscionable! Abuse of her power as a celebrity. She is now garbage and needs to be take out of the garage and put on the curb.
But there are plenty of dissenters who suggest a potential road to redemption for Loughlin, in keeping with the channel's more evangelical undertones. Hearties, in particular, seem keen on forgiving Loughlin; some cite Bible verses while others address the "community" directly. "#Hearties," one fan wrote on Twitter, "WCTH has shown us that offering forgiveness and second chances can be an amazing thing. So many of you today seem to enjoy watching it, but don't want to actually practice this in real life." Others expressed dismay and heartbreak, promising to pray for Loughlin and her family.

ROFL, this is the funniest shit I've seen all day. Changing your hairstyle, eyebrows and all that is all cool with me, but this is being done for a non-genuine purpose. The only thing is, I always here about POC folks applying for jobs pretending to be white by using their English middle names just to get an interview. I find that less weird though.
