I have my problems with this game, but it's definitely worth checking out, especially if you like the Zero Escape or Ace Attorney games. It's a fairly light-hearted overall, but it can still pack an emotional punch when it wants to. It also revolves around a pretty mature and grounded theme that I was pretty surprised to see this quirky VN try to tackle, but it worked for me in the end.

If you do decide to play it, just be ready for constant sexual jokes. And when I say constant, I fucking mean constant. It didn't ruin the game for me, but it did get pretty annoying after awhile. Just know what you're getting into before you decide to play it.

I can't see any written user reviews that are negative, makes me think it's possibly a bot

But yeah metacritic user reviews are the most useless metric ever, they'd be better off removing them but I guess they want the traffick the fanboys and bigots bring instead

This is the kind of people who Miziku should be happy to smash. Fuck them. If you want you can always tweet a message of support to Uchikoshi, when I finished the game I write a tweet in spanish and at the end I mentioned to him (in english) saying how happy I was with this game, he answer back with a Muchas gracias lol

Thats pretty shitty.
I love Uchikoshi.
999 and Virtue's Last Reward were great and Zero time Dilemma atleast had good escape-puzzles and Sigma's Team's story was pretty good I guess.
The Anime for Punchline had a cool Ending and Plottiwsts, but I dropped the game because it didn't do anything new.
AI seemed to return to the Quality level of the earlier games again so this is pretty sad.

Still need to play his prior games like Ever 17 and stuff.

Ugh why gamers gotta act like trump supporters. Atlus should learn from this with all the homophobic shit in their games.

Saw screens from this video floating around on reddit yesterday, wouldn't doubt it if it was the source (albeit viewer instigated). Video is from 2019 but someone might've reposted it.

Is a bunch of "virtue signalers, the game tries too hard to appeal to westerners baka" type stuff

This happened to Megaten games a while back. It was like 1 dude making hundreds accounts to review bomb every megaten game on metacritic.

it tanked every game's score except the more popular Persona titles

more reasons for me to completely ignore the existence of reviews (especially the user ones)

The more people review on bomb on metacritic the less metacritic becomes relevant. They're doing everyone a favor. It's not like anyone takes the reviews on there serious.

I didn't even know this game existed, 60 bucks feels like too much tho.

edit: Was a big fan of the Zero Escape games except for ZTD, but this one doesn't look that great. Might wait for a sale.

Good game? I keep giving this a pass over but with this pro LGBTQ+ message im interested again.
That's pretty much the only instance in the game. It's got more dumb "Haha porno mags and lingerie beat the bad guys" stuff than pro-lgbt content. Overall I thought the game was only okay. Felt pretty anticlimactic.

Its great but keep in mind this message comes from the little girl talking to the walking shitty drag stereotype who is constantly referred to as a monster.

The game is great but whoof does it undermine its own progressive message as it says it.

The character is running a drag bar, so it's not like the stereotype is out of context. I don't remember the character being "constantly referred to as a monster"; the main character makes fun of her looks, but in the context of affectionate ribbing between old friends.

I could understand the criticism if the stereotype was the only representation in the game, the way it is in the Persona games. However
Renju and Pewter are also gay / bisexual
and I don't think you could say that is stereotypical in any sense.

I get why some people may think the dialogue is a bit forced and comes out of nowhere, but it's still an amazing message towards the LGBT community.

Worth reiterating on every page that the game is currently on sale for 40% off on the eShop.

Incredible game. If I could only reccomend one game from him to someone who doesn't want to play a game as old as 999, this would be it. One of my top three game endings of all time, too.

the bar itself is a part of the stereotype

and it doesnt matter if its affectionate ribbing, its still gross and not acceptable

and pewter literally almost got everyone killed because of it, and they never actually say hes gay. hes not exactly stellar representation.

And tht is stereotypical because it tries to be vague about it when gay characters straight up need to start just saying "im gay" because subtext is worthless.

Metacritic user ratings/reviews have been absolutely useless since day one, and have been used for review bombing for ages. It's where people go to dump hyperbolic whine and shitposts about dumb, misguided, false and/or petty garbage.

It's weird that instances of reviewbombs have actually been successful in getting attention recently. Made some sense for Warcraft 3 Reforged since that at least broke records in volume and depth. But everything else is like...ok, business as usual then? I don't know why people are suddenly behaving like it matters? It really, extremely doesn't. If anything, that seems to be the problem here; people giving Metacritic user reviewbombings value by not understanding that they're worthless and no one cares.

I just hope that these easily offended snowflakes so fragile their narrow minds crack if the existence of LGBT people is referenced at all, don't find Letterboxd and ruin that too with their incessant whining, being offended by normal everyday things and forcing their eternally offended asshole agenda down people's throats. Probably only a matter of time.

I've seen people bitch about the pro-LGBT content in the game for a while now. Seems weird that it's getting review-bombed now.
Probably some alt-right asshole made a Twitter or Youtube.
Or could be botspam by someone with some specific grievance.

FYI, it's someone deliberately demonstrating how utterly busted the site is.

You might want to take a closer look at the Internet Archive. The first entry for that fateful day, on 08:38:05. Shows the score before it was "bombed"
5UFImou.png

By 09:51:35, the game had dropped into the yellow.
CBuO9SJ.png

Then once 11:33:15 rolled around, three hours later. The game had reached the "Generally unfavorable" level.
uJq8prP.png

Other games have had their reviews screwed up, in a way that explicitly ties them to this incident.

Crystar went from an average rated game to being the highest rated Spike Chunsoft game ever. The top review names the reason why they chose AI as their first example, calling them out for treating A-set (The adorable Vtuber they used to promote the game, at the expense of everything else they released that year.) like utter garbage in-game.
KIk3IWn.png

and an Obscure DSiware game known as "Metal Torrent" was (and still is.) the highest rated game on the site. If you take the first letter of each paragraph in the sole review. You get "A-set". and the username is an obscure spoiler that's only really recognizable if you have some knowledge about the game.
It's Boss's real name.
ndrW7gk.png

Albums were affected too, but there's no clear hint that it's the same person. Someone moved both of John Carpenter's "Lost Themes" albums to the top of the charts.

In case you're wondering how absurdly easy it is for one person to screw everything up so easily, it turns out they
  1. Don't block every "temp e-mail" site out there, the "E-mail Alias" feature on sites like Gmail might also have the same effect.
  2. Have zero protection against people making multiple accounts at the same IP address.
  3. Doesn't even verify if you own the damn game.
Ful6O3h.png

The main lesson here is that Metacritic is utterly worthless when it comes to user reviews, remember when people review bombed Portal 2, now considered to be one of the best games ever made, because the game had a tiny, completely unobstructive, hat store?

The lead game designer was SO SAD about this - I explained to him the phenomenon of "review bombing", and I hope he feels better.
At least link the tweet.

As a reminder, Steam, which actively protects against this sort of thing and requires you to own the game before reviewing it. Still has "Very Positive" reviews.

Edit: Since this post is starting to get spread around (What baggage is saying is indeed the case.) because Uchikoshi himself linked the thread. I'd like to quickly note that this was not "done out of nowhere" like people are suggesting. It was specifically in response to the recent discourse of Warcraft 3 Reforged, becoming the "worst reviewed game on Metacritic". Which i found to be a bit ridiculous considering the countless cases of people similarly damaging review scores of perfectly good games (Reforged isn't even that bad of a remaster IMO, a lot of the "controversy" surrounding it is that they decided not to completely redo the cutscenes. Which they stated multiple times pre-release that they were scaling back on.)

The plan was to make a proper thread a few days after my tests were finished, demonstrating how you can easily turn any obscure game into one of the best or worst games of all time with just a few hours of work. Hence why i ended up archiving everything each step of the way. Anyone who's familiar with my previous threads (Or watched the Gamexplain video on Tomohiro Kawasae) knows i like doing investigative articles on Gaming, and this was going to be no different.

But Akira Okada ended up discovering that i had tanked the score for AI hours after i did it, and the whole story basically blew up from there.
To reiterate my thoughts on the game from previous threads. I loved most of the A-set videos and found them to be incredibly endearing, even developing a massive crush on her due to my general attachment issues. But i hated the actual game for how it basically ignores everything said videos were trying to build up, to the point that it
Takes Naixatloz, the proper antagonist of said videos. and tosses it aside by cruelly making them a hallucination caused by A-set having a brain tumor, with barely any foreshadowing. and even requires you to rip her fucking eye out yourself, as part of a bullshit "One of the Psync machines requires you to remove an eye!" plotline that other characters get to conveniently ignore, all part of a route that's specifically about her.
the protagonist being a unlikable asshole who's sole character trait is "hehe funny sex joke" + basically spends 90% of the game completely abandoning his adoptive daughter, and the fact that i personally find the storyline it uses instead to be complete and utter nonsense filled with plot holes and ridiculous logic.

I definitely feel pretty bad for Akira getting so upset over it though, especially considering that despite everything, he seems to be the person running the Japanese A-set account. Which still provides some of the cute idol content i enjoyed pre-release. Drawing little sketches of mythological figures and other fun things.

Honestly, if there's one takeaway you should get from this unfortunate situation i've gotten myself into. It's that A-set means a lot to me. Even though i hated how her game turned out, it still makes me really happy to see people doing things like creating fanart, and hopefully this encourages you (and Spike Chunsoft themselves, i really wish they'd make more videos!) to continue supporting her.

...Even it does end with you acquiring Somnium Files and actually enjoying it.

I'm not surprised this is seemingly the real reason. If it was your usual internet shit lords they'd be crowing about this from the rooftops and it was all very quiet on that front, at least related to this game.

Did you miss the part where the owner of the gay bar literally tells you he's gay?
First she says that Renju's lover gave him his watch. In a later scene she says that the guy who gave him the watch was just in the bar, and his name was Pewter.
