Alessia Cara, who won a Grammy for Best New Artist this year, just released her second album today and it's amazing as expected.

Anyway, one of the songs in the album is called Nintendo Game and its full of Nintendo (and general gaming) references:

This is taking longer than Zelda

Is it too late to get a 1-up?

And so we treat love like it's a Nintendo game
But nobody wins

I'd rather try my hand at Rainbow Road

Etc... here is the audio if you wanna listen to the song.

I thought it would be fun to post in here, and also I get to promote her album to y'all. The full album is up on iTunes, Youtube, Spotify and all streaming apps, go give it a listen she is amazing tbh.

Reading them lyrics makes me cringe for some reason. This stuff for me always comes off cringey, regardless of artist.

Alessia is really great, loving the album. This song came off as one of the weakest during my first listen though

This thread reminds me of the time Lana Del Rey made a song called "video games" and people thought they needed to start paying attention to her nerd cred.

Also this song is generic AF.

The lyrics don't make much sense, what does it mean that love is like a Nintendo game? Anyway, aside from that I like her voice.

I've still never heard of her and yet I listen to chart music on the radio every day in work.
She has multiple #1 radio hits, if you listened to radio between 2015 and 2017 you obviously hear one of her songs like Here, Scars to Your Beautiful, Stay or 1-800 with Logic.

With regards to the lyrics posted - i think it's required to point out that those 5 lines are the only direct 'game references' in the song.

Code:
choose your weapon
and let's go
who's gonna beat this level?
I speed up
you slow down
looks like I'm on your tail now

another round
do we give up?
this is taking longer than Zelda
hold on
what I meant was
Is it too late to get a 1-up?

(pre-chorus)

baby baby baby
this is getting too crazy
I don't have the training

baby baby baby
this love ain't a game
so we should stop playing

(chorus)

push and shove
go 'head and take your aim
we better duck
cause right now nobody's safe
and we could grow up
but it's no fun that way
and so we treat love
like it's a Nintendo game
but nobody wins

(verse 2)

All the trash talk
is getting real old
I'd rather try my hand at rainbow road
I'm focused
plan my next move
but you're onto me so it's no use

it's a showdown
a game for two
pick each other's brains
looking for clues

a battle
with no objective
who will be the final one standing?

OP kinda made me think it's a 3 minute barrage of cringy gaming references.

here
also, i was hoping this would be about how parents just generally refer to every video game from every company as a 'Nintendo game'

what a disappointment

Doubt and comment, go 'head and speculate
We better duck 'cause right now everything's doom
And we could grow up, but it's no fun that way
And so we treat sales discussion like it's a Nintendo game
But it's an evergreen

Cool song

Gaga, Grande and now Cara all talking about Nintendo

This can only mean one thing, Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix 2

The song is actually pretty good (much better than I was expecting from reading the lyrics) when she's not making explicit references. The lyrics have a feel of Hello Fellow Gamers when she does.
