Cody has had the best matches of his career, including one that got 5 stars on the Meltz scale, in AEW. Yes he was out of place in NJPW, but AEW is not NJPW.

Wait a minute here. Just because you talk shit about Cody you are a so called aew fan? Come on
No, but he's an authority and primary writing staff member. If you don't like his matches--which logically, extend to his booking philosophy--it is basic logic to presume you won't like his overall product. For crying out loud, AEW's mission statement is to bring back old school wrassling, and that is not modern Meltzer Fight Forever shit. (Young Bucks sunset run aside.)

This isn't a purity test. It's a common sense thing--look at NXT's product where you're seeing three Canadian Destroyers a match and multiple false finishes with Gargano, and contrast it with AEW (again, Young Bucks aside, who are really bad about high spots and false finish spam.) There is a clear-as-day difference between what the product philosophy is.

edit: I guess I should clarify again... AEW =/= NJPW or NXT

IDK if there's as hard a contrast as you're saying. It's defintely a big sampler of all kinds of wrestling, though. And frankly, we've not seen the depth of that well considering who their partners are.

What no. Aew's mission statement is to do a variety of wrestling not to bring back old school wrestling. Because you don't hire Kenny Omega ,the lucha Brothers , Jon moxley etc because you want to bring back old school wrestling you bring those guys in to have a variety of wrestling .

That's definitely true, you are right.

But I guess what I'm trying to convey is if you hate Cody's style, you ain't gonna gel with AEW. Perhaps I'm clumsily communicating that.

100% agreed. It's very clear that what AEW is going for is to offer variety. In one show, you might have a joshi match, a hardcore match, a lucha-style match, a tag match, a trios match, an old school southern style match, a modern age main event style match. And I love that about their product. But the nature of that beast is that they aren't going to please everybody all of the time because some people have strong feelings for and against certain styles of matches. Going into the promotion, you either need to like it all, or at least accept that even if you don't like a style of match, others do.

Rewatching All Out.

Omega vs. PAC was so damn good, and JR did a great job of selling the story that Omega was off his game and that he wasn't thinking straight. When PAC easily got out of the way of a top rope dive to the outside, JR said that Omega might as well have had a big green sign on his chest telling PAC that he was coming. And comments like "that split second that Omega hesitated was all PAC needed." Even Goldenboy (or maybe it was Excalibur) chimed in with a "He's taking his time when he shouldn't be."

On a second look, this was easily a 4.5 star match for me. Maybe even 5. Either way, it was excellent and had a clear story of Omega taking too long to showboat instead of closing things out. Just beautiful.

Cody vs Jericho
PAC vs Page probably
Mox vs Omega
Bucks vs LAX probably

Very good 4 final matches.

Probably they will include the finals of the tag titles?, and the women's title defense.

Cody is amazing, one of the high ups of AEW so far.

Cody is one of the best wrestlers in AEW and I'll take the crowd reaction and engagement more seriously over people who hang onto Meltzer scales.

How do we feel about Jimmy Havoc? He looks like a bit of a runt, but I've heard people singing his praises for years now. Seems like a guy whose entrance costumes are more memorable than his matches.

I'll keep watching and hoping he gets something that makes me see what others see in him.

I don't think it's possible to recapture his PROGRESS title capture but I think 'deathmatch king' would be a really fun, but limited spot for him.

I feed off the Cody hate. He's actually wants to wrestle unlike some people who are happy sitting in the back collecting a check to do nothing. I mean more power to them but, I watch a product to see the people work.

AEW has been amazing and revived my love for wrestling again. As good as NJPW is nothing is gonna beat a weekly program. I really hope they put the differences aside one day. Get some AEW/NJPW dream matches going.

PAC (aka, "Pack") is an awful name though. I wish he hadn't gone with that.

I feel like if you like CZW, you'll like Jimmy. Otherwise... eh. I pass.

Cracker Barrel Clash...

Goldenboy: I don't know how much offense you're gonna get off those fluffy biscuits.

JR: Those are the best biscuits in the world.

LOL

So like people are complaining about Cody now? The guy looked more like a star than ever on Saturday and he's had nothing but great matches In AEW, including carrying Darby Allen and Dustin Rhodes (not necessarily knocking those guys).

I think Cody has been a fantastic spokesperson for AEW and has had some of the most memorable matches in the company. Yes, he's been booked in prominent positions too, but he still had to show up and do the work to get those matches over.

I do wonder if this announcement telegraphs Cody winning against Sammy Guevara on October 2nd, though. Or can he take the hit? Probably not before a championship title match...unless Jericho keeps making fun of him for it.

Meltzer star ratings for All Out, apologies if they were already posted:

Casino battle Royale: **1/4 ("Priestley threw out Gibbs. There were communication issues between the two, perhaps stemming from problems in Japan and there were issues after the match as well.")

Private Party v. Angelico & Jack Evans: ***1/2

SCU v. Luchasaurus & Marko Stunt & Jungle Jack Perry: ****

Pac v. Kenny Omega: ****1/4 ("It was a classic match until the finish as they traded big moves and the crowd reacted great. But the botched poison rana, an awkward one by Omega that I don't think was supposed to hit but didn't look good, and then Pac's which the flip by Omega was mistimed and looked bad, took the match down.")

Jimmy Havoc v. Darby Allin v. Joey Janela: ****

Dark Order v. Best Friends: **3/4

Riho v. Shida: ***

Cody v. Shawn Spears: **** ("Cody vs. Spears got a huge reaction. The match worked. Good wrestling, and the outside players enhanced.")

Lucha Brothers v. Young Bucks: *****1/4 ("The crowd cheered both teams throughout, with the only booing coming late when Matt unmasked Pentagon, a spot they knew would be booed but thought would be a good spot for the match in building the finishing sequence. Fans chanted "Zero Huevos," or no balls at the Lucha Brothers off a Young Bucks interview, which is about the only negative thing toward Pentagon & Fenix in the match.")

Jericho v. Adam Page: **** ("The main event was excellent as a stand lone, but didn't come off that way in the building. But Jericho is clearly the right guy to start TV with as champion and Page is far better off chasing right now. The key is television building Page and just being in this match establishing him as somebody to pay attention to. Coming to the ring on a horse is also the type of thing that to me, you want on both television and PPV, stuff out of the ordinary.")

Cody had a great match with Dustin and followed it with two meh matches, I think Cody is a smart business/backstage person but he is mostly mediocre wrestler with the occasional great match.

I'm on the Havoc train. I legit yelled "Yes" and pumped my fist when he got the pin at All Out. I for sure thought Darby was winning. Was worried he was gonna lose again and start to get lost. Now I just need Janela to get a W on the board.

Cody vs Jericho could be fun if it becomes an old school brawl. If they try to do a proper match then it will probably be worst than the Omega and Page matches. Both Cody and Omega work better when they forget about workrate and instead do their own thing. Jericho best matches in NJPW were the ones that turned into a brawl: Omega 1 and Naito 2. Jericho could even use a little bit of the bubbly in the match. Imagine Cody selling a bubbly shot to the head.

Don't really mind them announcing the matches ahead of time like this so long as they have a proper build, and they got time for that. Jericho being their top heel makes me think he's going to hold on to the title for a bit. It's a good opportunity to see which babyface can get over from chasing him.

"Trump, who was inducted into the Celebrity Wing of the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013, appointed Linda as the Administrator of his Small Business Administration back in 2016. She stepped down from the role at the end of March 2019. It was reported then that Linda was planning on helping with Trump's 2020 re-election campaign. CBS reported at the time that Linda would be working for America First Action, a pro-Trump Super PAC.
FEC data shows that Linda is the Chair of that America First Action Super PAC, and made a donation of $1 million back on May 28"
AEW already has their own PAC.

They should pit them against each other.

Looking forward to Jericho vs Cody.

Jericho's opponent for the announced first title defense on TV should be Dustin Rhodes. He and Jericho could put on a classic, and they can play up the fact that Dustin has never been a world champion (and tease that if he wins, it would be a Cody vs Dustin rematch for the title.)

Meltzer said in the newsletter that the AEW wrestlers were getting their faces scanned for the video game, so that's exciting, hopefully we get an alternative to 2K

Not just games. Action figures. MJF had a tweet that people matched the name on a guys lanyard to a toy company. Jericho confirmed it was for games too on his podcast this week.

I don't think Cody carried Darby but rather he clashed horribly with him.

It was a bad match, those two had no chemistry and Cody was doing this weird thing where he acted like a arrogant heel in this match resulting in abit confusion for the audience.

Cody vs Shawn was fine and Cody vs Dustin was great. I wouldn't say his AEW run has been flawless though.

AEW and NJPW working together would be absolutely fantastic and take AEW from "pretty good" to "amazing" for me pretty quick. I just look at the potential in the ROH deal that has been 100% squandered and how it would work so much better with a promo like AEW behind it.

But yeah I'm enjoying AEW a lot, it kind of feels like NXT to me with slightly less refined production and less predictable at this point but the same kind of excitement. I can't wait to see this thing grow and flourish!

On another subject, JR took some heat for his commentary style at All Out, but I think it's genius.

I think the best schtick for JR is the surly old man who doesn't know the new guys--just like what he was doing with the Orange Cassidy debut. It's gonna be super important for the Elite to understand that their broad TNT audience isn't gonna be as hardcore nor aware, so they're gonna need to incorporate explanation and backstory/introduction into the commentary.

The booth is looking really crowded, though. We have JR, Excalibur, Goldenboy, Marvez (yuck), and Schiavone? How do you make room?

I think JR continues to be better than expectations.

He's not the master of his craft anymore but I think he's adjusted well to being the colorful vet with a good crack or two and some colorful unexpected lines that add abit more personality to the commentary.

Yet another reason to support AEW....

"Former WWE President and CEO Linda McMahon has donated a total of $366,200 to the 2020 Presidential re-election campaign for Donald Trump, according to data from the Federal Election Commission.

Three different payments were made on June 3 of this year. One donation was made to the Trump Victory PAC based in Massachusetts, for the amount of $360,600. Linda then made two donations of $2,800 each, for a total of $5,600, to Donald J. Trump For President, Inc., which is his Presidential re-election campaign.
The donations were made through Linda's McMahon Ventures LLC, and were her first political donations since November 2016.

Trump, who was inducted into the Celebrity Wing of the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013, appointed Linda as the Administrator of his Small Business Administration back in 2016. She stepped down from the role at the end of March 2019. It was reported then that Linda was planning on helping with Trump's 2020 re-election campaign. I mean, didn't Shad Kahn give money to Trump though?
