All the crazy, cool, shiny features of ResetEra

Reading through various threads, I have seen people mention a handful of different features that are part of ResetEra's forum software which I had no idea about. I thought I would put together a list to spread the word to other Resettlers so they can enjoy these awesome features as well.

Post any cool feature you have found and I will add it to the list!

Forum Features
  • Post Quote/Reply notifications: There is now an alerts "tab" in the upper right, which looks like a globe. It will notify you of different things that happen including replies to a watched thread, quotes of your posts and mentions in posts (more on that below).
  • Post Mentions: You can mention any other member on the board by using @ and starting to type a users name (much like Twitter mentions). They will receive a notification of the mention in their alerts.
  • Post Reply: By simply hitting "reply" on a post, the post you are replying to is automatically quoted. You can multiquote by hitting the "+quote" button on a post and hitting "more options" in the quick reply box when you are ready to make your post. At the bottom of the full reply page, hit "insert quotes" and a list of the posts you have added to multiquote will appear, allowing you to include or delete the quotes from your post.
Update:
No need to use Insert Quotes. Select all the posts you want to multi-quote and just hit Reply on the last one.
  • Highlight Reply: If you highlight a portion of a post and mouse over the highlighted text, you can reply with just the highlighted portion of a post or add it to multiquote.
  • Spoiler Tags With Descriptions:
You can create spoilers like this:

    (spoiler=spoilertitle)words(/spoiler) with code brackets

    It looks like this:

    words
  • Threaded PM's With Multiple Recipients:
...every PM on xenforo creates a private thread between you and that person accessible from your inbox with all the functionality of normal thread posting. You can add up to five people to a conversation.
  • Other PM Features:
For private conversations (or PMs, if you prefer to call it):
    • You can allow people you invite into the conversation to also be able to invite others.
    • You can also make the conversation read-only.
  • Unread Posts:
Clicking the blue dot next to a thread takes you to where you left off in a thread.
  • Double Click To Edit: Edit your post simply by double clicking inside the post body
  • Better Ban Explanation on Users Profile: (unconfirmed?)
As well, bans are more transparent. They now will show the reason why that user was banned, and how long it will last. Or so I've heard.
  • Cloud Backups for Page Timeouts?
I don't know if anyone else has seen this yet but I had a thread time out on me while opening it and it redirected me to a cached version of the thread in the cloud that I could still view.
  • Thread Page Navigation:
...moused over page count and saw that they scroll and I can manually select the exact page I want to jump to...
  • Hidden Text, Only Viewable By Members ("email tag" for sharing codes only accessible by members)
Also, it seems users figured out how to replicate the hidden text via email tag. Just swap out "email tag" for spoiler tag & there ya go (quote to see my example). Glad this was discovered, the free to a good home thread can start giving out more codes & such away now.

[*spoiler="just type something in the title, but nothing between the actual tags"][/spoiler]
*remove this icon to use the actual code
  • Automatically Add Thread to Watched: (this option must be turned on in the "alert preferences")
it looks like any thread you reply in automatically gets added to your Watched Threads list. That's kind of nice.
  • Keyboard Shortcuts in Editor: You can use keyboard shortcuts in the post editor for thing like Bold (ctrl-B) Itallics (ctrl-I) and Underline (ctrl-U)
  • Sort Forum By Thread Creation Date: (to view new threads newest to oldest)
With this spiffy new forum software, you're able to sort the topics by creation date. Meaning, after you come home from work or wherever, just click on "Start Date" and it will sort everything by topic creation date. Super easy to catch up on the day's news stories that way.
  • Follow Other Members: If you click someone's user name, you can choose to follow them. It appears like it just adds them to a list of people you follow? (Let me know if you figure out other things it does!)

Being able to @ people is a nice addition.
Don’t need to quote every time.

Being told when I’m quoted is a huge deal.
Not sure why that wasn’t a feature elsewhere.

Like I've previously stated... this feels like internet 3.0, and all I'm wondering is "why the fuck did it take this long for it to become a thing?"

Also I don't know how conversations worked on vbulletin, but every PM on xenforo creates a private thread between you and that person accessible from your inbox with all the functionality of normal thread posting. You can add up to five people to a conversation.

That's insane.

But how will this work when this site has 150k+ members in the far future? You're going to @Ha... and get like 500 different results from @Halo to @HaloXXX, @Halo123, @Halo1337 etc etc etc?
It doesn't generate autofill until it's exact enough. So you'll only start seeing names when you get to @halo1 or somesuch.

I wish it embedded Youtube videos and tweets like Discord. Can't have everything, but the new stuff, especially alerts, made me realize how much we were missing out on.

Sufficientvelocity, the forum I'm an administrator of, has youtube, tumblr, google drive, tweet, and reddit embeds. I think that's an addon you can add to xenforo.

The only thing I miss from the ultra futuristic Waypoint forum is the realtime preview on the right when you reply. Other than that, amazing forum all around

Yo, yo, yo :lol the notification bombardment is real!
Wow, didn't know we could @ people. Yoshichan Yoshi seems more aggressive these days eh?
Is it the avatar? I'm currently studying basic psychology and I've read that just by adding a picture next to a text (in this case, an angry Yoshi), the delivered message has "anger" added to it - no matter the content of the post.

It was for a short time long ago, until it proved to be too taxing. It's great to see it return and I hope it never has to be disabled. I love all the new features, turns out we were starved all those years :p

You can embed Youtube videos. Click the little film strip icon and paste in the Youtube link.

Hopefully they add embedded tweets soon.

Probably the avatar, I tend to form way too many impressions of people subtly from their avatar, lol

These are really great features

Altho I used to be on a forum with the ''alerts'' tab, at some points when you post in too many threads it can get kinda cluttered, but its still way better than having nothing.

The other features are cool too, I especially like the ''highlight to quote'' and the @ mentions. Good stuff

Post reply: By simply hitting "reply" on a post, the post you are replying to is automatically quoted.
No need to use Insert Quotes. Select all the posts you want to multi-quote and just hit Reply on the last one.

Sufficientvelocity has a feature that summarizes alerts, not sure if it's public, but since people get likebombed you have all of their alerts summarized into one single one.

You also can turn off some alerts in alert preferences to manage traffic

For private conversations (or PMs, if you prefer to call it):
  • You can allow people you invite into the conversation to also be able to invite others.
  • You can also make the conversation read-only.

All of these small features really add up & make you appreciate them even more combined. Heck, I was able to remove 2 of the 3 extensions I had to make the other forum more post-able.

Neat to hear about the @ mentions, I'll try to start using that when I want to reply to someone but feel as though I don't need to quote their post since it's the latest post.

Now if we can just get a live-thread feature for live reactions, it'll pretty much fulfill everything I wanted in a forum.

Yoshichan, this is just to apologize for everyone who is using you to test Post Mentions. It is certainly not to test them for myself!

Thanks for putting together this list OP! The snazzy highlight quote function will definitely come in handy. I would also like to bring y'all's attention to the following application of a new feature, as highlighted by a post by an admin:

If you need to request a title change in the future feel free to use the report button on your post and we'll get a notification a lot quicker.
Disclaimer: This thread was made using the highlight quote function

Here is another cool one I just picked up:

You can edit your post simply by just double clicking on it! No need to scroll to the edit button.
