I was playing the game on launch day and telling my friends in middle school how awesome it was.

Didn't become a fan until Final Fantasy X, and then went back and played all the ones I could find, including FFIX which I love.

Also between this thread and the Dreamcast never getting a classic edition thread with half the replies being oh I was still leaving cookies for Santa or not even born yet is making me feel real old.

I purchased the game day 1 and spent upwards 60 hours wringing as much content as possible from that playthrough.

OP honestly seems like they've been on a one-person crusade to defend the honor of Final Fantasy lately

This isn't the first time they've bizarrely vilified the community in the name of Square Enix

What kind of gamer entitlement BS is this?

"Where were you all when the game was launched under a tirade of constant mockery and low sales?" Nobody owes a corporation anything, let along sales or defense force-ery of a product.

(all these "I was 10 and under" posts)

Way to make me feel old.

This is what FFVII Cid must feel like.

In 2000? I was 18, and loved it, bought it myself without the need of a parent... and now i feel old because the game came out before half of you here were born.

I've spent the last few personal threads shitting on Square so I don't know what you're on about.

I was a teenager coming hot off of FF7 and IX seemed too kiddy and weird looking for me. I wanted the dark gritty Shinra/Midgar aesthetic

Now Im 31 and I played IX for the first time last year and absolutely adored its quirkyness, gorgeous art and touching story

Tldr i was dumb now im leas dumb

I was playing the game with some friends who I used to play a bunch of jrpgs with.
I was probably just to young to write about it on message boards etc. But I do remember trying to convince one of my friends to play it because he liked VIII, didn't succeed tho', too "cartoony" for him 🤷‍♂️ .

You didn't knock on my door to tell me RPGs were a thing, OP. It's not my fault I didn't discover RPGs until Kingdom Hearts.

I was around 11 years old at the time, and I remember how big of a deal the releases for FFVII & FFVIII was...then one day I happened to be at a EB Games, and I just happened to see the cover for Final Fantasy IX, it was so strange I had to do a double take, because I legit never even knew they released a new Final Fantasy, considering how much I feel in love with that series.

FFIX is a great game, but I prefer FFVII & FFVIII. My guess is the art style and probably lack of marketing is why it sold 5 million instead of 8-10 million.

This reminded me of the time that after playing the game, I asked my gaming friends why nobody told me about FF9 early. All their answers were: "The kiddy one? Man, you will be better off playing the superior/manly one: FF7"

I admit this may have added to my dislike to FF7 and FF8.

How has this not been posted yet?

Kotaku article about that guide

Seriously though, this guide. I have it still and it is such a special thing. Game was fun. I was in high school. I just remember playing 7 and loving it. 8 was a annoying because draw/cast. 9 was just, I don't know, something special?

It is but I think it's understandable coming after the completo different art style of FF VII and VIII.
Agreed, making the science-fantasy elements more at the forefront compared to previous games resulting in the cyberpunk leanings of VII and the advanced yet contemporary style of VIII led to creating different expectations for players who became fans of the franchise with those games, with finally introducing more realistic proportions at all times in VIII rather than only sometimes like in VII not doing any favors to IX's more traditional fantasy leanings with super-deformed models.

I had just started college, didn't have my PSX nor a way to afford it. Also it's not my job to vigorously defend a video game from meanies on the internet?

Adored the game when I finally played it, though, it's definitely one of my favorites in the series

I bought it day 1 and have sung its praises ever since. One of the best FF's to date. It was all downhill from there.

I was there on Day 1.
Doesn't change the fact that I don't believe FFIX lives up to FFVI or FFVII.

It's better than FFX, FFVIII, FFXIII, and FFXV if that matters to you OP...

I got my parents to buy it for me and I played it and I didn't talk about games and shit online because I was 10.

Don't see how "it's my fault" when I (ok, my mum or dad) bought the game.

I imagine most fans of FFIX bought the game and enjoyed it, hence how they became fans of it...

Playing it? I bought it day 1 and loved it. FFX was the first one that disappointed me. I loved FFVII, VIII and IX all dearly.

I didn't know FF existed when it came out. Then a few months (or maybe a year) later my friend told me about it, convinced me to buy it, and I loved it.

I am personally offended you compared whatever ridiculous backlash got to World of Final Fantasy. Most criticisms I've seen of WoFF seem fully deserved.

Never liked the main characters tail and I had moved on to the PS2 by then so I stayed away. Now that I'm older I don't really care for the design but would play it, but haven't had a chance to go back.

Always loved it and was baffled to find out it was hated on so much. I have a distinct memory of visiting a local game shop and the owner was from japan and he was the one that told me in japan people hated the style of the game and zidane himself. I supported the game at the time and it's still in my top 3. Beatrix is my favorite FF lady too.

I'm okay with dismissing WoFF though I can't stand the funko style at all. If everyone was in the KH style like the main kids I wouldn't be complaining.

this is like a reverse reality opinion

I dunno after ff7/8 the last thing FF needed was a nostalgia trip. I just thought it was so boring honestly

Real brave of you to blame a 9-year-old who didn't even have a PlayStation my dude.

I'll never understand why some people take a thread title so literally.

Obviously I'm not specifically calling out the members of this forum. The "You" represents the culture of the time, which was largely highly negative towards FFIX.

It's nice to know the game is getting the praise it deserves now, but this is also the reason we don't see more refreshing experimental games like this.

You think Nintendo will ever make a non-handheld Zelda on the style of Wind Waker ever again? The early aughts were pretty much "Fuck your cartoons" and that's probably affected a lot of decision-making from devs even today.
