I thought the champions league was just facing the elite 4. Since Alola has none there is no Champions league.

I guess you could argue fights like Ash vs Paul had more emotional/personal stakes due to it not being an match after the proper tourtement but at the same time - Ash vs Kukui soars in key areas.
