  • Amazon welcomed more new Prime members on July 15 than any previous day, and almost as many on July 16 – making these the two biggest days ever for member signups.

I'd bet almost all of those were free trials, and canceled after the sale.

The sales were so bad the the only thing people were talking about in the thread were the expensive cameras and lenses people got for cheap.

I wanted to start making my home smart, I just bought an echo dot and a couple of smart light bulbs to start.

The entire world: Who gives a shit about workers.
Right, but it's not like putting off your errands for 2 days was ever going to do much. The absolute height of slacktivism. Cancelling your Prime/Audible/Twitch subs would be much more meaningful, rather than just waiting an extra day to order the same shit you would have on Prime day. The whole thing was hollow as fuck, and the height of moral posturing. While I personally didn't buy anything (partially because I don't really get the point of Amazon Inventory Cleanout Day, partially due to the boycott), anyone who had any expectation of a few Twitter accounts shaming people for shopping instead of supporting workers somehow meaningfully impacting the shopping plans of value-oriented consumers was deluding themselves.

* Eye roll *

How did people get food before delivery? Must be difficult times.
How did people get paid before direct deposit? Must be difficult times.

Shut up.

I like going to Best Buy, sue me if every once in a while I don't feel like driving across town after 8 hours of work and would rather just get a thing (they might not have in stock or just for cheaper) in the mail in a day or two.

agressive man. Im talking about the part that people always use that bad excuse that they lack time. Before internet people had the same long working hours, the same busy social lifes and the same hectic children to take care off. Yet people were able to go to the store to buy shit. And no im not old before you think that, i grew up with internet. Its just my pet peeve. i can understand you want to safe time but too busy for it?

I think a way we can all help in a more consistent way is to not choose 1 or 2 day shipping unless we really need it. We buy lots of things that don't really matter if they arrive in 3-5 days. In those cases, you can help buy choosing the slower shipping. Amazon will even reward you with credit if you do so a lot of the time.
I try no-rush, but more than half the time they still send it in 1 or 2 days. I think the only reliable way to slow them down is to designate your Amazon Day.

Your post was patronizing and I'm not in the mood for it.

People prefer convience above all things else. These things are invented to make life easier.

Yes, people found time to go to Blockbuster before, now we don't have to do that anymore. People used to have to go to bank to move money around, now we don't have to do that anymore. Just because they used to do it one way doesn't mean they'll want to stick with it especially because they can appreciate the amount of time it saves them.

It's your pet peeves that people adjusted to this?

Am I gonna give shit to my 40 year old boss for using Uber eats just because I have no issue picking up food. No.

Boycotting doesn't do shit, strikes are the most effective way to force change. Unfortunately they're also the most risky for that exact reason.

The goal of boycotting is not necessarily just to change the company involved but to increase public mindshare about the subject. This thread is 5 pages and was just started, it's extremely active. I think they're worthwhile for that reason alone.

This is a good discussion on the subject: https://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2017/02/07/when-do-consumer-boycotts-work

That was a price error where people got thousand dollars and up of camera equipment for under a hundred bucks, so even if deals were amazing there was going to be discussion on it. However, just like any other prime day the main deals that weren't price mistakes and were readily available were amazon's own products.

One thing is to discuss it, but it dominated the whole thread, we also a lot of people begging to buy some of the equipment, it was a mess.

23&Me? Really? Talk about frivolous. And this from a person who briefly considered getting a dna test for my dog.

Yes and just like civil rights this needs to be done through legislation and not rely on the kindness of peoples hearts

You're right. We desperately need legislative change. It's frustrating to see victims of a bad system blame each other for problems well beyond their control; especially when we're all just trying to cope and get by. Not that there's anything wrong with trying to get more people to participate in various forms of action, but because we feel so powerless, our energy ends up focused on each other rather than the people in power who are pulling everyone's strings.

It's just miserable.

I got $10 from them for shopping at Whole Foods (which I do anyway) so I bought some beef jerky.

I don't even see the no rush option anymore, just amazon day, which now gives the $1 digital credit. Just moved into an apt complex so at least the driver isn't just delivering just my packages each time. I see tons of packages along with mine everytime I order anything.

But yeah I used to try to game the system with no rush. If I had multiple items i wanted, I'd do no rush on each item, except 1 as no rush to stock up on credit then do a regular 2 day and often times they'd all be shipped together anyway.
