In the continued "I'm altering the deal" that is seemingly happening more and more with lots of subscriptions these days Amazon is changing the deal again. At least this one isn't too bad all things considering.
Dear Prime Member,

As we invest to improve our Same-Day delivery service we are writing to let you know about an update to the Same-Day delivery options available for Prime members in eligible postcodes.

The majority of Prime members currently receive most of their Prime orders with One-Day delivery, while free Same-Day delivery can be manually selected for eligible orders.

From 18 September 2023:
  • Your Prime Same-Day or Overnight (Tomorrow by 1 PM) orders over £20 will automatically be delivered to you using the fastest available option, at no extra cost. This means that where available, you will get eligible orders delivered for free on the same day or by 1PM the following day, depending on when you place your order.
  • Eligible Prime orders under £20 will continue to be shipped with free One-Day delivery. Where available, Same-Day delivery can be selected at checkout, but there will be a fee of £1.99 per delivery for orders under £20. The fee for customers who are not Prime members will remain £5.99.
For more information about Prime delivery, please click here. You can manage or cancel your membership at any time by visiting your account.

We hope you continue to enjoy your many shopping and entertainment Prime benefits, including Prime Video, Amazon Music, Prime Gaming, Prime Reading and more.

Thank you for being a Prime member.

Sounds like there's an open goal for anyone who wants to sell £1 basket fillers for people who are buying £19.99 products on Prime. I suspect it might also result in products currently between £18 and £20 just being bumped up to £20 so they look cheaper overall.

Same day delivery is something new, right? Prime always got you free one day delivery with no minimum order, and it still apparently will.

I've never managed to get same day, universally anything that says "Get it same day" will magically become 1 day when I get to checkout.

I don't remember ever having a same day delivery option on Prime, so this seems…fine?

Cheers for the heads up - not got the email notification yet, but I do make use of same day every now and then. Didn't they just up the delivery fee on grocery shopping recently too? If I wasn't splitting the cost for Prime with my parents after my student membership expired, I probably wouldn't bother much.

... and just as I finish typing the email comes through. LOL.

I've had Prime for a long time and never used same day, my sister used it once for a laptop charger because she was away from home and needed it for work. In that situation I would imagine she'd have paid the extra but I don't see the point otherwise.

Kind of makes sense on Same Day Delivery.........if you can get it that is. The times i've seen 1 day delivery, i think 90% of them transformed into "One Day Delivery" with the odd couple actually being same day

But doesn't seem much is changing for the One Day delivery option.

Not that new. It's still been available for a good number of years now.

My guess is maybe your location affects things? Your location affects things the most followed by item. I have been lucky and have seen a lot of things available for same day over the years and have be able to order just before 12pm for it to be delivered same day.

It's a very location/item based option so my guess is you probably don't live in their qualifying post codes to see it.

Can't get outraged over this. Driver's are under pressure enough and adding things under £1.99 for same day delivery seems silly.

Whenever I buy something that says same day delivery "Arrives tonight by 10pm" or whatever after the checkout it always updates delivery day to being the next day. Never been mad about it and never had something arrive the same day but always was a bit curious as to why. Am I gonna get charged for this shit?

I'm not even anywhere remote im in the middle of Newcastle.

Edit* Read through the OP and won't affect me I guess as I never seem to actually get same day even though it selects it at checkout anyway. Same day always seemed like such a crazy ask that I'm not mad at all lol.

100% same day is only in the larger population areas.

A lot of people seem to be reacting like this is next day delivery that is being hit.

Yeah that's my assumption but it's not like it doesn't know my location at the time it's still telling me it's same day.

I'd guess they defer the stock lookup (because it's not enough to be in stock; it also has to be available in a nearby warehouse with a delivery round that's in your area) until you reach the checkout. It's probably too computationally expensive to do for every item on every page, and it can't effectively be cached or memoised.

as someone who doesn't live in a amazon country this still feels absurdly cheap and convenient.

I've only ever seen Same Day show up for a handful of things, but I took it to be down to my area. I guess this may have more of an impact on those living close to the warehouses or in cities?

I hope they don't fuck around with Next Day Delivery.

Yeh just got the email for this myself... Being charged for Prime shipping then again for that shipping itself is BS.

No one forced them to spin Prime into including other stuff that messed up the financials of the core premise (ie shipping)

I tend to use Amazon Day delivery to get everything delivered at once anyway. Only go for next day deliveries if we've unexpectedly run out of something.

I'm not in a particularly large population area but I am six miles away from one of their distribution centres so most things would be available same day. Not the biggest loss, but it was convenient.

When i lived in London, i used same day shipping a lot. Shame they are introducing additional fees.

I don't think I've ever had a same-day delivery order.

I've had lots of times when I've ordered something on a Friday and the product page says it'll arrive Saturday, only once you've finished the order Amazon suddenly goes "oh, you wanted it Saturday? We meant it would arrive Monday. Monday evening."

I get the same day option on quite a bit of stuff, but I think I've used it maybe 2-3 times in the many years it's been available. I seldom even bother with next day at this point, when Amazon day delivery is kinder to the workers and environment (potentially), and even that gets it to me in 2-3 days at worst.

Fuck off
I have barely used my amazon account over the last few years, every so often I take a free 30-day trial to watch stuff on Prime and that's about it.

I haven't physical bought anything from them for nearly a year.

The only time I see same day is if I'm ordering something after midnight but before say 2am. It's a rarity, like maybe once a year.

Oh it is slightly absurd that I can order anything up to the best part of midnight and it'll be at my house generally around 1pm.

I don't think I can get same day delivery where I live but £1.99 for the convenience seems a pretty good deal

Well yes, but previously it was the £0 for the convenience and you're paying a decent chunk a month for what they told you was "Free fastest possible delivery".

decent chunk a month? It's 9£ or around 100£ a year. im American but that's absurdly cheap and not a decent chunk. It's next to nothing for what you get

The "Next Day by 1PM" change seems more significant than same day. 99% of my Amazon orders are using that (and I generally filter for it, if I don't use it then orders often don't come until 7-8PM).

I get why they're focussing on the change to same day though. Most people can't get it so it's not going to seem like a real change to most people (as demonstrated by this thread).

Jokes on them, In Scotland same day delivery never existed in the first place!

Ha ha! Ha ha ...ha....

Yes I know it did exist in some places but realistically, nah. Was hardly ever an option

Likely doesn't affect me much as I can't say I've used same day or delivery by 1pm that much, but I think it's slightly annoying after they already raised prices recently for prime. Just getting kind of tiresome at this point that companies don't even wait a year before coming up with a new price, or a new change to make themselves more money often leading to more and more record profits while normal people struggle. Not that I think this is a particularly big change, but, I dunno, just rubs me the wrong way. I doubt the drivers are seeing this extra money.

Same day aside, I did think Prime delivery was such a waste when I bought a couple of things ages ago and maybe I didn't notice during checkout but sending something one of the items by itself next day, I got just a small childrens book in a small envelope. I know people ask for fast delivery but it seemed so utterly wasteful seeing a kids book rushed to my door that fast. Six and half a dozen maybe, delivery is a delivery.

Yeah, I keep a "Buy next order" list for small things that aren't worth someone carrying to the door on their own.

Even so I've had 49 packages shipped so I've paid about £1.50 a delivery given, as Prime itself tells me, I've listened to 0 musics and watched 0 videos.
