America: 68-year old woman turns to OnlyFans & sex work to pay for medical bills and food for herself and her disabled son

So there's a semi viral tweet going around of an older woman posting her OnlyFans with a nude video and people making all sorts of jokes.

I thought it was pretty funny until I saw that she actually had to turn to OnlyFans and GoFundMe to pay for her and her disabled son's medical bills & living expenses:
I am 68 years old with a 45 year old disabled son. His disability is mental, PTSD, bi-polar, depression, anxiety. He is on medications, sees a psychiatrist and weekly visits by his therapist. He has no one but me to care for him. I recently had a medical concern so went to the doctor. An ultrasound revealed that a CT scan needed to be done so that was done. The CT scan revealed a lot of things amiss, two particular things are life threatening, an abdominal aortic aneurysm with 50% blockage and a large mass on my left ovary. I had a hysterectomy 30 years ago and while the ovary was not healthy they left it in and now here we are with a mass on the thing. I have specialist appointments lined up to see what can be done about the inflamed colon, colitis and diverticulitis, and the ovarian mass. I take my blood pressure daily and record it in a log, I take my cholesterol meds and blood pressure meds religiously.

On March 4th I will see my GP again to review my blood pressure log and check my cholesterol level. If both remain high then he will treat both aggressively in the hope of lowering the chance of that aneurysm exploding and killing me within 3 minutes. My son's therapist, in an attempt to calm him, suggested he and I form a plan of action should I die. I burst into tears. There is no plan to be made. I always thought I would live to be 100 and my son would die first.

So here we are, I get $773 a month social security. I have no retirement from the work I did for over 30 years. I do work but with being so ill the hours I can work are severely reduced. My son does not get disability. We applied and he was turned down due to not having worked enough to pay into the system. I am applying on his behalf for SSI to see if maybe he can get some kind of income that way. He is on Medicaid and I am grateful for that as it covers all his medical/psychiatric/psychologist/medication expenses. He also gets $16 in food stamps each month. You read that right.....$16.00. I hope there are peop;e out there that care enough about one old lady and her son.

So I'm putting my life out there for the whole world to see. I hate having to ask for help. For years I did whatever I had to do to put a roof over our heads and food in our stomachs, I've sold my plasma even though every single time I passed out. I have sold everything of value. I don't live a fancy life, I drive a 22 year old Toyota. I am at home with my son nearly 24/7, only leaving to go to the bank, pharmacy or Walmart to buy food. I'm hoping there are some good souls out there that will see the real need we have and want to help us.

This is an insanely sad situation that's probably far more common than we think. Out of all of the #Medicare4All stories, this one probably hit me the most because it's an intersection of sex work, elder issues, healthcare, and food assistance.

I mean, she's not just doing onlyfans videos. If she isn't acting in her ad, it seems she's actually selling her body. Depressing situation for sure. Also don't click that twitter link if you're not ready for something highly inappropriate.

But anyway I follow a few onlyfans "performers", but I think they're just lazy gays and not actually disadvantaged. But who knows.

I meant the older people being extremely poor having to take care of disabled kids with just Social Security checks part not the OnlyFans gays part.

God, reading her message really kills me. She seems so desperate :( America's healthcare system is so fucked up. I hope she gets the money she needs. Also, I wonder if she'd ever consider writing, because I found the way she wrote her story compelling (although obviously bleak).

That's not what I meant. I don't think sex work has lesser value as a profession. Just that no one should be forced to do that, because it's the same as losing your bodily autonomy. I would rather everyone had some kind of basic income.

I'm a sex worker BTW and started because i have 'basic income' of 197 per month while trying to get on SSI while dealing with a transphobic disability administrative judge deciding my worth and how sick i am lol. I'm asexual and I am doing it and don't feel for a second like i'm 'giving up bodly autonomy.' I didn't feel forced into it. I could have sold drugs. I could have resorted to the theft. It's not like someone held a gun to her head tgo specifically pick sex work. The internet has made is super accessible these days, and I feel like is she making an honest hustle doing something much more effective than drugs or other crime. I don't think it's fair all these comments about how much of a tragedy it is she has to do SW. the tragedy is not the SW. Your basic income comment is heading in the right direction.

onlyfans isn't like say, the same thing as human trafficking.. and a lot of these comments don't do much to convince me people really grasp that difference in my opinion? I feel like that's not fair?

The tragedy is definitely not the sex work but the fact that the government and society have completely failed her needs as an almost retired woman.

This hits me hard because my mom is disabled.

Did you know that in America, even if you're permanently disabled (which also means that even if you wanted to or could work, you're legally not allowed to work in any capacity), your small, poverty line disability wages don't even come with fully covered healthcare? My mom has to use her disability check to pay for her Medicare Humana premium upgrade so she can see the specialists that take care of her chronic disability. And she still has to pay large copays. There's almost nothing left to eat off of or live with. And she can't augment her income because she's disabled.

The way we treat disabled sick and poor people in this country is ATROCIOUS

Sex work is the ultimate "it's not for everyone" job. If you're fine with it then that's great, but it's pretty well established that it can be extremely emotionally taxing on some people. The fact that there are some people who feel the need to resort to it to make ends meet due to healthcare costs is an incredibly sad indication of the state of healthcare in the US. It's fucking pathetic.

ok...let's get some perspective. Sex work is usually seen as a person's VERY unfortunate last resort, not an "honest hustle". Based off this woman's emotional plea for money, I think it's very safe to assume that both her onlyfans videos and prostitution are probably not something that she actually wants to do. You may not feel that the work you do is tragic, but it's not crazy that most posters here see this as a tragedy with the information provided.

If I'm reading this right, the issue isn't her medical costs but rather her medical issues may be untreatable, and without her, her son does not have a social safety net to care for him.
