Are you guys for real?

Big comics bumping small comics is extremely common and a natural part of the NYC comedy scene. This won’t be the last time it happens to Brendan if he’s on the way up. The star comics do drop ins all the time. And as mentioned, audiences love it and it gets them psyched and the dude had a good set (he still got to do it, didn’t even lose his stage time). Nobody lost a thing here.

This is only a thing because people want to attack Schumer for a bullshit treason. Funny they’re trying to make it look like a big shot hurting the little guy, because she has a reputation of being really helpful and supportive to newer comics, pays extremely well for her shows and even helped her openers get specials.

I dont understand why she had to do her SNL monologue right then and there. She's a big name, couldnt she do it some other time.

That other comic isn't gonna say anything bad about this. But yeah fuck her don't take their time. Hope they still got paid.

She shouldn’t have done it, the guy has the right to think it’s shitty, but good on him for taking a low-key and pragmatic view of the whole thing.

Many of us are not familiar with the NYC comedy scene and its rules.

This just in: saying "But I'm (your name here)!" as an appeal to your own authority generally makes you look like a self-important douche.

See port authority lady from a few weeks back.

Well now you know: this is a super common thing that happens to every comic. Chappelle, Rock, Seinfeld, all do this, and there’s a reason you’re only now hearing a woman getting called out for it.
They're bumping headliners in the middle of their set?
I've seen last minute people come on and be special guests, but they're not pulling a showtime at the apollo and yanking him off like what she did.

It’s not common to bump other comics in the middle of set. They’ll bump before they go up. This is also a spot that is hard to get and is the culmination of a lot of hard work for the comic, it would be different if they were a regular at Caroline’s

Cool lets all rail on Schumer because..........she gave more publicity to an unknown comic.

If nothing else, it makes me interested in this Brendan Sagalow guy who seems pretty classy to take it in stride but not in a welcome mat kind of way.

She accidentally gave more publicity to another comic while in a rush to make sure her jokes land. I'm not railing on her, but come on, let's not pretend this was a magnanimous gesture on her part.

Schumer was already not funny. Now she is also a crap person as well. She was probably jealous that someone who is actually funny was up on stage.

I'm not familiar with the NYC comedy scene, so you may have a point. I used to watch a ton of comedy in SF and Mill Valley. Drop-ins by big names weren't uncommon. The thing was that this would never be mid-set, so that's what I found odd.

Mid set definitely isn’t common, but the crowd fucked with it and she didn’t seem to do lot of time (it’s not uncommon to completely lose your spot if bumped).

Yeah, getting bumped for a bigger name is part of the game, so it's fortunate that the headliner was able to finish his set- and was even able to kill after the interruption, apparently. Kid might have a future!

So...it's common for comics to be assholes in the NYC scene? This shit right here is all that matters though:
“She basically came in and went to the manager and asked if she could get up [on stage]. The manager said Brendan has just gotten up. She asked for 10 minutes and the manager was explaining how he was doing a long set,” a spy told Page Six, to which the comedic actress replied, “But, I’m Amy Schumer!”
The manager essentially told her no and her excuse for why it is OKay to interrupt is because she is famous. That is shitty no matter how you spin it.

In the end, glad he took it well.

For one, this is something comics do all the fuckin' time. Don't pretend like if this was, say, Chris Rock, people would care at all.

If he interrupted a comic in the middle of his set, I'd still care to the small extent that I care about this. It's shitty, unprofessional behavior. Bump them before the set, sad but they're the big name, them's the breaks. Bump them in the middle of their routine, not by the manager, but by the comedian themselves coming and taking over? That's a dick move.

I listen to podcasts from several different comedians and they all have very similar stories. This seems to be a normal thing in the stand up world.

Nobody is upset about this but let's get upset about this.
It's almost like you missed the part where people were telling Brendan Sagalow how fucked up it was within the OP quotes. Seems that people there seemed to think it was fucked up or how Brendan himself said it was fucked up but was taking it in stride?

But hey, "alls well that ends well"?

Ha, I literally just watched the episode of Crashing where John Mulaney shows up and bumps one of the (lesser-known) character's sets.

Really good show btw if you're into standup and the culture/lifestyle of it.

It seems kind of like famous Musicans getting up and jamming onstage, but the comedy version, no biggy.

Huge comedians will often barge in and do sets at various clubs around New York. The difference is, they usually don't cut the headliner, let alone interrupt them in the middle of their set. I'm glad the guy got his full set in anyway, and that he sees it for what it is-- an tasteless act that brings him attention he'd otherwise not be getting.

Plus, going on after Amy Schumer means he killed that audience, guaranteed. I can't think of a single comedian who wouldn't look funnier following her.

I feel like this happens quite a lot but doing it in the middle of the guy's set is pretty shitty.

At least she sort of built him up a bit after taking the mic:

Everybody thinks I’m friends with Amy, she knows my name, she said she follows me on Instagram, which she mentioned. She said she ‘loves Brendan as a comic.’ She doesn’t. You put the quarter in, you play the game.”
so the people in the crowd that didn't know who he was probably became a little more attentive when he came back on stage. "Oh shit, someone famous is praising him so he's gotta be good" which has got to help when trying to resume your set after such an interruption.

But this bit though...

“But, I’m Amy Schumer!”
ugh

Richards can be heard saying, “Dave Chappelle! It’s Michael Richards, can I do 10 minutes really quick?” to which Chappelle responded, “Of course,” before welcoming him onto the stage.

During their set though?
People calling it bumping are downplaying it as a last minute scheduling bump. Cutting during a set is a dick move whether it was a man or woman, Chris Rock or Seinfeld. Fortunately it ended on a net positive but the dudes response was on point. Cool experience that was still shitty.

I mean if I was in an interview for a head chef position and Gordon Ramsay barges in acting like we're friends and wanting to talk to the person interviewing me, I'm not gonna tell him "get out, this is my interview." I'll be annoyed initially but still...

You’re right that it is a very common thing but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s ALWAYS been a shitty thing. Though you’re also right that people just like to pounce on Amy over anything when all she’s doing is a thing many comics have been doing forever. I personally don’t find her funny but I also don’t have the vitriolic hatred that some seem to have for her.

Why is this news? Louis CK and Chris Rock and other "big name" male comedians bump people all the time to do spots at the Cellar and other clubs.
