I thought I should put a graph at the top to give you a general idea of how things stand for each fighting game. Of course, please check out the rest of the data I gathered. This thread is 4 years of hard work & counting.

With so many fighting games out right now & even more coming on the horizon, I thought that now would be a pretty good time to analyze how the current fighting games out right now have handled this ratio. This is strictly as of when this post was made, so keep in mind that most of the games mentioned below will probably have more DLC long after the creation of this thread via later edits. With that said, here we go...

If I missed a game or two, I'll try to add them in. But I'll stop here for now before I lose my sanity. With that said, here's the rankings based on pure percentages for female fighters compared to the entirety of their game's current roster (this also doubles as a TL;DR section)...
  1. TIED (100%)
    • Arcana Heart 3: Love Max Six Stars!!!!!!
    • SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy
    • Them's Fightin' Herds
  2. Skullgirls: 2nd Encore (88.888%)
  3. Dead or Alive 6 (64.286%)

  10. Soul Calibur VI (41.379%)
  11. The King of Fighters XV (40.385%)
  12. TIED (40%)
    • ARMS
    • Guilty Gear Xrd: REV 2
  13. Samurai Shodown (39.286%)
  14. Street Fighter 6 (38.889%)
  15. Guilty Gear -Strive- (38.095%)
  16. DNF Duel (37.5%)
  17. Fighting EX Layer (36.842%)
  18. The King of Fighters XIV (36.207%)
  19. TIED (33.333%)
    • Street Fighter V: Champion Edition
    • Tekken 7
  20. Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate (32.432%)
  21. Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl (32%)
  22. Killer Instinct (31.034%)
  23. Injustice 2 (23.684%)
  24. Dissidia Final Fantasy NT (22.857%)
  25. MultiVersus (22.727%)
  26. Mortal Kombat XL (21.212%)
  27. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate [Defaults Only] (19.767%)
  28. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS [Defaults Only] (18.966%)
  29. Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite (16.667%)
  30. Dragon Ball FighterZ (11.364%)
As for my thoughts on these numbers.
  • We've officially seen too little of Tekken 8 & Project L for me to confidently put them in the ranking, & it'll be a while before I can confidently do that for either games.
  • Street Fighter 6 is off to a better start when it comes to women than past Street Fighter games, but DLC needs to keep it up.
  • NASB started off decently regarding women (better than Smash, at least).
  • I feel like we know enough of the roster to add DNF Duel to the ranking. And so far, not bad.
  • KoFXV is already ahead of XIV regarding the ratio of women to the entire roster, so that's nice.
  • Guilty Gear -Strive- is a fair bit behind its predecessor so far, but hopefully that improves with the last base roster character as well as DLC.
  • Them's Fightin' Herds, Arcana Heart 3, Skullgirls, & DoA5 making up the top dogs didn't surprise me at all. To be honest, the only surprising part is that DoA didn't have a higher percentage.
  • I was both kinda surprised & not surprised by how both recent BlazBlue games, UNIEL, & Guilty Gear lead the pack in terms of female combatants (behind only DoA5). I mean, I know they have a ton of female fighters, but I didn't think that they'd plow over the competition by that much.
  • Likewise, KoFXIV kinda snuck up on me in terms of the number of female fighters in its roster. Then again, there's a ton of great ladies pull from.
  • ARMS did amazingly well in terms of the female fighters percentage for its first outing as a fighting game IP. That said, I did expect it to rank as high as it did. And with the game's newest character, ARMS is now tied with GGXrd in the percentage of women in the game. It should also be noted that ARMS has an equal number of men & women in its roster, which should be commended.
  • Tekken 7 & SFV:AE were about what I expected. Solid percentage of ladies for both games.
  • Injustice 2, MKXL, KI, & Smash Wii U/3DS ranked a bit lower than I expected. Though I'd imagine that Smash 4 would have placed a bit higher if I had counted Robin, Villager, & Corrin (29.310% if all female alts are counted, which would be ahead of Injustice 2). Smash Ultimate was originally worse until Min Min showed up, so there's at least some bright side, but it took Yabuki to get her in to begin with. Smash's problem is mostly an industry one, yes. But Sakurai & Nintendo could do a much better job of taking advantage of the options that exist when it comes to women (as well as people of color). This is something I've mentioned numerous times in the past, so most of you know the drill by now.
  • For as many franchises as WB has at its disposal, it's weird how few women we have from the start. Hopefully that gets fixed going forward.
  • Fighting EX Layer did about how I expected it to in terms of its percentage.
  • Dissidia ranking this low came to a legitimate surprise to me given the wealth of potential female characters that Final Fantasy could pull from. That said, if I were to count Cloud of Darkness, it would end up being pretty much tied with Smash Wii U/3DS in terms of percentages (which is the point of the ranking system).
  • MvCI's lack of female fighters has already been discussed to death, but I have a gut feeling that some female parity rule is in place for the game. Capcom could have easily passed up Marvel in females with just veterans alone (which is also sad considering the number of great females that Marvel has, even factoring in the then-active Fox ban), but they didn't for some reason. And looking at both sides of the roster, there's the exact same number of females between the two of them (2 per side in the base roster, 1 per side in the Season 1 Character Pass). It seems like a dumb rule, but then again, Marvel has put in dumber restrictions (see the Fox ban).
  • Normally I'd be more disappointed in DBFZ's female fighters count, but it should be noted that Dragon Ball historically hasn't had a ton of major female fighters that posed a major threat to the heroes or villains. It wasn't until recently with Dragon Ball Super's Universe Survival arc that this problem had begun to be rectified with the likes of Caulifla, Kale, Kefla (who's a fusion of Caulifla & Kale, in case you don't keep up with DBS), & Ribrianne. But alas, that arc came too recently to have an impact on the base roster or the first FighterZ Pass (beyond Android 17, apparently). Having Videl in Season 2, Kefla to kick off Season 3, & Lab Coat 21 close out the game is nice (outside of the latter being currently overpowered), but the game could've done better (especially considering that we have more Gokus than women).
So what do you guys think about these numbers? Should I throw another recent fighting game in here? How do you feel about fighting games in terms of how many female fighters there are in their rosters (& how well-done the ladies are as characters)? I'm curious to hear your opinions on the matter.

Good writeup, but please use women instead of females.

*edit* Please stop quoting me years after my post was made. The OP already changed their post from females to female fighters back then, which is fine.

I honestly surprised MvC: I was so low. If this game waited a year we might have got some x ladies and Hela. Oh well

Not sure that the problem is the nº of female characters. Like, DoA has more women than men in it's roster, yet.... yeah.

Dragon Ball is kind of understandable given the lack of female characters in the source material, but they could've added one or two more I'm sure.

Also, now we have super characters, they could add more from there.

I'd imagine that we'll see the likes of Kefla & Ribrianne as either DLC or in a DBFZ sequel.

Probably should adjust for non-human characters. Or are we entertaining that some are "male typed" so those would be counted as male too? Anyway, it's obviously skewed towards "male" centric and always has been.

I think there's quite a few games in that list that have a number of non-human characters.
if you're willing to take the time, I'd like to see the total %'s by Male, Female, Non-Human?(Androids etc, can be counted as male/female, I just mean, Kirby for instance, ooze dude, etc.)

2 female characters in DBFZ is pretty terrible, but understandable. NRS also never have enough women in their games and I've been wanting them to take cues from Tekken/KOF/most other Japanese devs in that department for a while.

Also, no KI?

Female fighters or female characters. It's not hard.

Don't use female as a noun unless you want to sound like a Ferengi.

Most non-humans are gendered.

I didn't know about the women vs. females thing. I wonder what that does to Jigglypuff.

Smash is kind of an interesting case since so many fighters can be either gender, and some are agender (Metwo) or ahuman (ROB). That 18-20% may seem low but less so when the game does not adhere to a 50-50 gender binary.

Well this thread is about the current batch, but if you aren't limiting by that then there are a ton of female majority fighting games.

Nit picking, but the latest version of DoA5 came out after smash wii u, so it technically should be up there.

And I knew someone would complain about the use of "female".

DOA5LR is the only fighter i can think of where the females outnumber the males

Which is probably why pure numbers don't tell the whole story without also seeing how many of these characters are oversexualized by design. In other words, is it worth applauding the inclusion of a woman/girl character if she was designed to pander to an audience that demands every woman/girl character have ample T&A to ogle at? Obviously there's a subjectivity to each design and for each person, but there are some series that have blatantly oversexualized their women/girls more than others.

I would count Corrin as a women. Most of the fanbase always refer to the character using female pronouns and she was popular enough to get an amiibo even with the male character being the default. If anything, I think it was a big mistake to have Male Corrin as default in the selection screen.

I feel like overall there are more which is good but I don't think anyone should just add characters for the sake of getting a percentage number up.

The lack of Dead or Alive 5 is shocking. It'd easily be number 1.

Only two (maybe even 1) females in DBFZ sucks, but that's mostly due to the source material not really having many females to choose from. We only just recently got 3 more notable females in the anime that could be added to the game.

Dragon Ball disappointingly only having a few female fighters to choose from can be attributed to establish canon and its history of lacking them (hopefully that changes in that future), but other games with original characters have no excuse.

Marvel is especially bad because they have a wealth of female characters to choose from, but nope..

I don't think games need to arbitrarily create more female (or male, non-human, etc.) characters to meet a perfect balance. However, I do think it's important for developers to consider these kind of statistics when making their games. And I personally would love to see more female characters in fighting games since characters like Supergirl, Tira, and Ibuki usually end up as my favorite to play as. I'm sure that has to do with their mechanics more than anything but it's still worth talking about.

DoA is simply a case where the roles are reversed.

Female main character means female rival, means many characters involved with the mc are female, means a good portion of the non story relevant chars are female

In regards to female character %

I don't think numbers are a problem it is more how female characters are still in many cases the "and". All these male characters AND a few female characters.

See the 2 seasons of SF5 dlc. What is up with them doing 4 male 2 female characters and i bet season 3 will be the same again for whatever reason

How far back are you looking? I miss DOA, SC and VF, I've played Tekken and SF but barely any of the other ones you list. Interesting results either way.

I did add KI & DoA after the fact, if that's what you're wondering. VF & Soul Calibur V may be a bit too far back.

It's more about skimpy female clothes sells more to their fanbase, and they get a ton of money from it. That's why all the DLC characters are women (not counting the new characters included in revisions).

DOA5 LR is the game that opened the floodgates of selling tons of costumes in fighting games. (it also introduced a cool free version though).

The anime fighter scene out there would have close to 100% female cast. I'm thinking Arcana Heart and such games.

Or you know they just made a fighting game series with a female main character that happens to also have fanservice

That the main character is a woman doesn't have anything to do with a lot of the roster being women, and all DLC sold separately being female characters.
It's just their marketing, they get money from fanservice, hence more female characters in their roster.
