Following its March 20 launch, the newest installment in the Animal Crossing series on Nintendo Switch has sold-in 7.15 million units in Japan as of June 30 according to Nintendo (1,2), making it one of the 12 only games to have ever sold more than 5 million units there:

Since then, it has sold-through an additional 300k units at retail according to Famitsu, implying that it took the 2nd place from Gold / Silver and is now only behind the original Pokémon games: Red and Green at 8.22 million units. The game is still selling over 50k units every week and continues to be the main driving force behind the insanely high demand for the Switch.
Game has not yet had a single holiday season.
