Hey Bell, did you know that you can buy prostitutes? Way easier to just buy a sex slave with hard earned cash and feeding the sex trafficking market instead of trying to shut it down. Way easier and far more heroic Bell. Also...this whole arc so far is Ishtar wanting to destroy Freya by capturing and raping Bell. But of course this is okay cause Bell is male so of course it's fine. Jesus fucking christ.

Senku is really the villain of the show, using his mad science powers to create the alluringly evil ramen to entice the ignorant masses into joining his Kingdom. God this show is just great. Suika is also the best.

Fire Force 7
It's not shounen anime unless we have scenes featuring naked women fondling and complimenting each others breasts while well-placed steam obscures seeing the full picture.

I liked the actual set up for the 1st Division as well as the sparing sessions. Captain Burns is too perfect of a name for him not to be a bad guy. Sadly, the fox girl is back, making sure there are plenty of laughs when our male characters catch an eye or handful of her in the next episode. Sigh...sometimes I just don't understand why I watch anime anymore...

Anna's fate was worst than I was expecting.
At worst I was expecting her to be dead or maybe even comatose, but to have your entire existence erased and replaced by another person with only a couple of people knowing you ever existed is a whole lot crueler of a fate than a simple death. Suishou turning out to be some kind of evil lesbian seductress who eats girls' souls was also honestly unexpected as well, that was not the direction I thought her character was going to go.

The first shot of their military uniforms made them look like they were wearing some Hugo Boss SS uniforms. Fine episode I guess....Arthur continues to slide into being a useless character.

Fruit Basket

So to keep the fascist motifs , their salute to prince Soma....geez. fine episode, a little contrived, but to be expected given the absurdity of it all.

So Anna got erased from existence. Huh. I guess that's her fault for being extra dead? What confuses me is why Mangetsu didn't even try to help Kuon fight Suishou. They're still friends, and it was pretty obvious that Suishou was manipulating Kuon. Actually the whole Suishou/Kuon relationship is just getting weird, not helped by Kuon and her sister apparently being extra close. Suishou is also getting into Mangetsu's head for extra measure. But with Mangetsu giving red flags everywhere I'm still unsure whether Mangetsu, Suishou, or the magic system itself will be the final boss. Shingetsu's whole drama is honestly the least interesting part now, especially without Anna around to scream at her all the time.

In the previous episode, Suishou tried to interfere with the Anna vs Ernesta fight, and Mangetsu stopped her, saying they she should let them solve their issues themselves. Later on Mangetsu tried to interfere with the Suishou vs Kuon fight and Suishou repeated Mangatsu's words to her.

I believe it was Mangestu trying to interfere at the very end of Anna vs Shingetsu (when Shingetsu was getting her limbs ripped off) which Suishou responded to. I don't think Mangetsu tried to help Kuon at all since she was watching the big battle.

Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai 13–14

With his sister out of the picture, it's time for Kyousuke to rise up again. Her absence leads Ruri (Kuroneko) and Saori to pay Kyousuke home visits. Saori explains that Kirino has barely contacted the hobby group, making her feel betrayed. She says something serious for once, and then begins to grope herself. At school, Kyousuke pesters Ruri to join a club because she's doing things like eating lunch by herself and blowing off invitations to socialize. With her back against the wall, she decides to give the game research club a try since it suits her creative interests. With the guy that Kyousuke borrowed a bike from as its president, it's no surprise that the decor includes porn games.

R40xnIn.png

In the club, Kyousuke meets his 2nd new underclassman, Akagi Sena, who wants to learn programming for game design. Provoked by Ruri, Sena delcares her love for gay porn games and gets even more ostracized by the club. She admitted to fantasizing about the members gang-banging each other too. Refusing again to be his rebound, Ruri tells Kyousuke to save his misdirected feelings and pity on their way home. When Kyousuke admits he's lonely without Kirino but sincere about helping her, she gives in. At home with Kirino on his mind, Kyousuke thinks about calling her, but doesn't. With the way things ended last time, the club president decides for the girls to create a game together to get along. Inspired by thoughts of Kirino, Kyousuke suggest for the club to make a porn game.

Ruri's idea for a game wins by landslide against Sena's after announcing the desire to create a "masturbatory" work, inspired by Kirino's success in doing so. Kyousuke and Ruri work together on it in his bedroom. At her request, he comes to sit on the bed she's laying on and playfully tells her that she shouldn't give guys the wrong impression... He then questions if she likes him. This creepy mood prompts Ruri to confess that she "likes him as much as his sister does," and he takes that as "not at all." He backs off with that misread of her words, and then notices that the game is full of bugs. An exchange of heartfelt words gets Sena to help her fix them, forming a new friendship.

sFF2e4T.png

Ruri's definitely different from "Kuroneko," but she's still a gloomy kid, so of course she doesn't fit in at school. She's the type of person to engage wholeheartedly or not at all. I'm glad her character is getting properly explored, but it doesn't feel sincere to me, despite Kyousuke's assurances. I think he really is just searching for his sister in the wrong places, and with the wrong feelings.

Sena comes with some unwelcome lampshades on several issues in Oreimo. It once again indirectly conflates homosexuality with pedophilia and child abuse as social issues with the introduction of Sena's similiar circumstances to Kirino's, but that may speak more about Japanese society in general. The otaku condemnation that she says is unrealistic doesn't apply to Kirino either, who already saw it firsthand from her school friends. It's self-condemnation in her case, which the siblings are unwisely eroding together. Sena did add the caveat of otaku being comdemned "only when they do something socially unacceptable" though.

I carelessly suggested that Kirino is a pedophile before, but she's too young.* That inclination still exists in her though. Oreimo relies heavily on the fact that Kirino's a young girl herself, barring her from legal reponsiblitiy. The excuse that the cuteness she appreciates happens to exist in pedophile material shows her willingness to cross lines. She's too immature to acknowledge her own sexual gratification, finding those depictions of sexually abused girls "cute" instead. Her family is failing her, especially the father and brother. Kyousuke even supports it with his involvments.
—————
* According to the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, one has to be at least 16.
Domestic violence count: 20 (not counting a new cut in the OP where Kyousuke gets punted into the air and nearly dies)
Sexual abuse count: 5

O Maidens in Your Savage Season 08

God this Sugawara-Kazusa-Izumi love triangle took a lot of turns but I found it interesting in the sense of how she was at one point mad that Kazusa saw her as someone who 'steals crushes' in the same way other girls did, now she's left with some guilt in realizing that she really does like Izumi. Kazusa realizes her mistake though not explicit in the show and now sees that it's not her not liking Izumi but that she was holding out for her. All this had me wondering what Izumi might be thinking in the first place and there you go. Unfortunately this is all soured up with an old "noble" pedo who is not just there for show but actually is the 'crutch' with which Sugawara's realization unfolds. It's made worse with Izumi believing that she was still head over heels for her instructor, offering to even help her(though she mostly ignores what he was saying).

Sonezaki confesses admitting that she was afraid of having her romantic feelings misconstrued with sexual feelings - it's a cool distinction but I do not feel very satisfied with how the show reached this point.

Yeah I do think the Sonezaki piece wrapped up a bit abruptly, ultimately it was to service the triangle storyline which was quite well done. I did really like how this episode played out though, the juxtapostion between the play vs what ended up happening at the bonfire, how the ubran legend managed to spread, etc. In general I've been enjoying the series, I just wish Okada had shown some restraint with the pedo nonsense.

Two episodes with different takeaways and impacts of being jealous of Tohru and her influence on others in her life. While I really wanted to scold Hiro, his situation far more highlights just how jealous and brutal Akito is toward other Somas. As with the Prince Yuki squad, they had a lesson to learn too, which they promptly ignored thanks to their own fears of being cursed. Hilarious, but I also loved Hanajima this episode as it peeled back another layer to her character.

Symphogear Season 1 Episode 1

So with some of the talk and clips I've seen of the latest series, I thought "Hey, maybe it's worth a shot for a laugh or two."

I ended up feeling so damn invested in what's going on, it's so over the top and it's peak anime but godamnit I love it so far.

Dr Stone Episode 8

Suiki would totally be over powered in an MMO, nothing like a stealth enemy that constantly gets the drop on you and uses charm while everyone else delivers the beatdown. Stepping away from the Tsukasa story-arc for now is a great move, it's settling down and having fun character interactions that I just love.

Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai 15 [End]

After their first collaboration gets torn to pieces by online feedback, Ruri and Sena aspire to make more, better games together. Meanwhile, Kyousuke continues to confide in Saori over the phone. Afterwards, he looks up at his ceiling, and goes into reminiscence about that time his little sister sneaked into his bed, mounted him, and slapped him. It's been 3 months, and his mind is still stuck on her. At least he's satisfied with his work at school, knowing his new underclassmen were on good enough terms with each other to no longer need his help. Wait, what help? After doing nothing, Manami still praises him. Suddenly, Ruri calls Kyousuke out to meet behind the school building, and at the same time... Kirino texts him.

Kirino wants Kyousuke to throw away her stash of unmentionables. He tries calling Ayase to see if she knows what's up, but she wisely blocked him over half a year ago, probably after he announced his mad love for his little sister to her. With Manami's help, he's able to contact Ayase, but to no avail because Kirino hasn't talked with her since leaving. Not knowing what's going on herself, Ayase advises him to "help" Kirino.

When he shows up to meet with Ruri later, he looks distraught. Seeing him like that makes her call off her business with him. She gets mad at him when he explains to her what's wrong, saying he should already know what to do. On the side, she gives him a small progress report on socializing at school. After sharing her honest happiness, Kyousuke responds by telling her he must go see Kirino. As he starts to leave, she sneaks him a kiss on the cheek. "It's a curse," she says, that can't be lifted until her wish is fulfilled. With that little push, she sends him off to go see his sister.

x45wXma.png

This man shows up at your door. What do you do?

In Dad's place, Kyousuke travels to America because Kirino asked her parents to throw away her trophies and awards too. He shows up at her door and it's time to play incestuous games again. Kirino laments the fact that she can't play them in front of her roommate, a little kid, who's conveniently out training. While they play Sis x Sis, she gingerly asks him if he was lonely without her. Happy with his response, she gets asked the same in turn. Getting embarrassed, she denies the possiblity. Although she's happy to learn Ruri's made a new friend, playing a game together with her brother again makes her super happy.

Kyousuke eventually brings up her text. Brought to tears, she explains that her possessions and accomplishments made her soft and unable to compete up to her abilities. She wants to be hardcore, but her family won't let her. She couldn't contact anyone back home because of her self-restriction of needing to beat another athlete first. Even aware of the unlikelihood, she still wanted to challenge herself. In doing so, she tried to destroy what she thought was holding her back—the life back home.

Having heard enough, Kyousuke tells her to come home with him. Knowing it'd mean giving up on track, she yells at him that he doesn't understand what it means to her, despite describing it to him in episode 12. Not caring about that, he tells her how lonely it is without her, admitting that everyone else's support for him going there was an excuse for his own desire. Now crying himself, He even goes as far as telling her she doesn't have to be an overachiever, and if anyone wants be hard on her for that, he'd beat them up. Lastly, he gives her the ultimatum that if she doesn't come home, he might die... She gives in and this cues the theme song to play, but she's still set on beating someone there first.

1ctGiIp.png

Kuroneko meets the siblings at the airport as soon as they arrive. She shares a warm exchange with Kirino for once. Kirino then gets embarrassed while trying to keep it secret that she only managed to beat someone after Kyousuke arrived, putting her in "top form." She beat her roommate, an elementary school girl. One time. Before heading home, It's all wrapped up with Kirino's exclamation of coming back to Japan being worthwhile for the Meruru movie. That's where season 1 ends—Kirino ecstatic over a little sister character instead of chasing her dream.

6dxO8vr.jpg

Imagine there's no heaven.

Just how are they going to explain that to their parents? While Kirino closes doors on her future, Kyousuke opens windows in his life. He's got a catty yet smitten underclassman to let in, but what does Kirino have? She's getting pigeonholed into one path... With the emotional turmoil she put herself through, she needs a real counselor in her life, not her doormat brother. Textbook homesickness caused her to harm herself further, and then it's decided for her to pull out. He really should have drilled it into her head that she should focus on herself while maintaining connections. Instead, she fabricated a false dilemma on top of providing her brother breadcrumbs to a shoddy solution. Of course, she would have scarred herself more if he didn't show up, but the conclusion could have been better for her.

Oreimo has taken a route where the siblings obviously need each other to be happy. Was it worth the burial of her athletic future? I mean, if what she needed was his presence, then they should have just kept in touch. Kirino's not good enough without her brother and shuts out all support, and then she's okay with him selfishly wanting her to return without trying to reintegrate her support first. What an idiot, but at least she tried? No, her brother cut it short when she just needed to realize she was hindering herself by neglecting her pillars. On the other hand, the choices Kyousuke makes, and the reasoning he uses, just drives home the fact that he's so immature himself.

Interestingly, Kirino wasn't wearing her pink hair clips in America, which she's never been without until now. Is that a part of the self she wanted to destory? Does she wear them for someone's sake, who wasn't around in America? I wish their story had more meat because there's so much other content crammed around it.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? II 7 - DROPPED
So, I had said I was uncomfortable with some of the subject matter Danmachi had been touching on in the set up for this arc. This episode did not change that opinion by not only suggesting the only alternative to war is to invest in the slave trade by buying their friend out of her servitude but also seems to suggest part of Ishtar's plan involves human sacrifice of all things. I can't even begin to imagine whether or not any of this will be handled well at all, but there's practically nothing left of what I enjoyed about Danmachi's first season left in the show at this point (underdog protags scraping by in poverty, undertones of class warfare, small boosts in power given great narrative focus), so I think I'm better off parting with Danmachi before seeing how far it sinks in this arc.

Fire Force 7
By-the-numbers as this set up for the next investigative arc was (and as boring as Princess has become after Shinra berated her with "hero speak"), this was a fun display of some absolutely gorgeous background art. The cathedral where the first department makes their headquarters is stunningly beautiful, and I appreciate the visual clarity of making everyone in the first wear religious robes to distinguish them at a glance. Again, it's those small ideas that make the world feel so real before the script falls on its face, but at least the art continues to remain as strong as the minor details.

O Maidens In Your Savage Season 8
While still putting in a little too much "good faith" argumentation about Sugawara's mentor that he doesn't deserve for my taste (especially coming from a character who should've known better), this was a better than expected conclusion to multiple storylines, some of which have existed since the beginning of Savage Maidens. Despite her many questionable writing choices, it's hard not to give Okada credit for wrapping so many disparate threads so neatly here all while still managing to throw some last-minute curveballs our way. With so many stories seemingly coming full-circle, it's hard to know where things go from here for the last four episodes, but I think I feel better getting the sense that Sugawara's mentor is unlikely to have much more impact on the plot at this point, which is for the best. He remains the worst aspect of Savage Maidens, and it's hard to recommend bkt because of his inclusion but how Okada handles him: apologetically. But hopefully, the end, much like the beginning, will be free of his influence.

Lord El-Melloi II's Case Files 8
After the twist at the end of the last episode, I thought there was nothing this one could do to shake up the proceedings until the mid-point, but damn if that reveal on top of the train didn't raise more questions than it answered! The fact alone that Waver confirmed that Hephaestion is a Servant brings so many questions that feel entirely anciliary to the murder on the train and the Mystic Eyes auction. Who is Hephaestion's Master? Did her Master steal Iskandar's catalyst trying to summon him and got Hephaestion instead? Is Hephaestion acting on her own since being summoned or on behalf of her Master? Given the fact that she had to have been summoned for the fifth Holy Grail War, what will happen to her and/or her Master that leaves the Rider class open for the Matous to summon Medusa? How much any of that plays into the Rail Zeppellin arc remains to be seen, but it's so weird to see this development because it feels so removed from the kind of material Case Files has been consumed with, but this show has been so solid that I trust this to go somewhere interesting.

GeGeGe no Kitaro 70
An excellent visual aside, this wasn't really more than a fairly standard horror tale with some of the edge sanded off. I appreciate the idea at play here, and the visual of people literally dissolving before their souls run back toward the mountain in a trail of blood footsteps is eerily evocative, but most of the episode didn't work especially well. This cour and the last have been particularly effective at lifting visual direction from noteworthy Japanese horror media, but I feel this episode kind of pulled its punches too often for its scares or atmoshpere to land as well as a lot of recent episodes have. It's not a bad episode, per say, but outside of one great idea, it's just quite plain by the series' standards as a whole.

Star Twinkle Precure 29

Star Twinkle may have a new best episode. A rare opportunity where I get everything I wanted from the show, fancy tech, new society with its own culture that is not necessarily wrong, and space politics. Mother AI may be Moedius with a new skin, but it doesn't seem like they're going to make her a villain this time. Though if Mother AI gets all of Lala's AI's information, that means she'll know everything about the Cures. So now we get why Lala feels so inadequate compared to her family. Her boss AI told her she's at the lowest level. Rough. Also she's not exactly following protocol because she really wants to avoid getting the Starspace Union involved and all the headaches that would bring. Government good, government bad, or government incompetent. You make the call.

Surprisingly little time is given to Lala's family all things considered. Probably because this is a multi-part arc. Within a multi-part arc. This has been one long space trip. So if Lolo gets a planetary-wide award ceremony for finding one pen, what does Lala get for finding ten? Wonder what kind of tracking equipment they have for being able to detect the Precure, but not know anything about them. Nice to see Prunce and the princesses having some connection to the Union since we know that's the case. Madoka takes a page from Lala's book and gets a great heart-to-heart scene. Getting the Earth government involved with this alien invasion might be the right course of action, but would it really? Hard to say who should be trusted. Not sure if being this wary about your government is a good message for the kids, but it's interesting nevertheless. Tenjou is a joke as usual, but she did setup a headache for the Cures. Boss Guy is super dumb though. How do you see evil red lady invading your lab, then Lala holding the pen being concerned for you, and then proceed to call her a thief? And were there no cameras on the outside? Minor gripe in an otherwise excellent episode.

Lord El-Melloi Case Files 07-08

As always El Melloi episodes setup an intriguing mystery atmosphere - more so, now that we're on a train now. Episode #7 had quite an ensemble set of characters, not that I know all of them but they certainly looked interesting to say the least. Teasing us with many little details than I could keep up with (which is very much an El Melloi thing). This was except for the part the chuuni goth girl burst through and loudly proclaims why it was obvious she'd be here. I've been expecting it to lead up to the much talked about 'auction' but as it turns out we're in for a murder mystery and not just a case of robbery. I'd say it's an interesting turn of events but this apparently, is a common affair during the auction between Mages. A murder of mage surely involves magecraft, more so considering this mage could see a little into the future and the culprit was missing even from the past as confirmed by a priest with so called 'mystic eyes of the past'. I only hope some vague concept we have not heard of before does not appear sweeping the core of the mystery, though it could do much worse.

This next episode shakes things up a lot, maybe even too much. We've gone from a simple case of robbery and auction to a murder and now an all out servant battle. I figure Waver bought them some time. Whatever happened to my meditative mystery atmosphere I wonder.

Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai. 1

An older brother can dream, can't he? Kyousuke wants space from his little sister, but also her attention. Sweetly, she tries joining his dream bath as kids, but he pushes her away. Like the older Kirino this time, she fires back by telling him how awesome she is. Instead of calling her out for being too sweet—like from his dream a year ago—she's too sour this time. In order to fine-tune their relationship, it's time for the pair to pick up the pieces and readmit into their counseling sessions.

F5a2TR6.png

Once more, with feeling.

Back to reality, Kyousuke tries to strike up a conversation with Kirino in the living room, but she's too busy catching up with friends on the phone and ignores him. At school, he talks to Manami about it, telling her that bringing Kirino back might have ruined their relationship. He's bothered by her continued neglect towards him. The other thing on his mind, Ruri, is kept secret from Manami. Same as ever, Ruri also continues being cold towards Kyousuke, despite the kiss she cursed him with. On his way home he thinks about how Ruri told him that she likes him as much as his sister does, so he calls up Kirino and asks her directly. Of course, she tells him off instead, dodging the question.

Kirino's busy making the rounds to get her life back in order. At dinner, Dad's words about properly getting back into the swing of things inspires Kyousuke, but he's still not sure what to do. In sync, the siblings get up at night and they go downstairs at the same time to quench their thirsts. He's finally able to talk to her, but she dodges his question about whether or not she still needs "life counseling."

Kyousuke gets a proper answer the next morning when Kirino slaps him awake again. She was busy last night making a shopping list and it's off to Akibahara again. (This shopping spree was funded by her royalties from her published novel and anime adaptation.) A truckload of goods are delivered to their home too. Although he's just her mule, they're finally doing stuff together again. And as a reward, she lets him play one of her incestuous games first. How... kind of her?

PamOUdh.png

Different studio, same staff. This episode is basically a reintroduction and marks a year since the siblings started their new bond over Kirino's hobby. It's interesting to watch her socialize with others girls at school too... She's so bored doing so that her attention still gets drawn away by the other otakus' talk in class. Is it too late to suggest that the high school should shut down the "game research" club? Or at least expel its perverted president, who's already been held back several years? Anyway, Ruri's going to lose this so hard if she keeps waiting on Kyousuke, but maybe she's just trying to save her friends from each other. It's hard to say right now. Not that it means anything as a side note, but the Kousakas have replaced the rabbit statue on their TV stand with a humpback whale one. It looks nice at least.

Star Twinkle Precure 29

This makes me miss Dokidoki, with its two minutes of government-sanctioned Precure action in the epilogue. It's probably for the best that Madoka hasn't let the government know about the Notrayders -- they'd just deploy Prime Minister Mana and have the whole thing settled by dinnertime.

Star Twinkle is at its best when focusing on Madoka and second best when focusing on Lala, so this was a very good episode. The bronze medalist in the episode is actually Lala's rocket AI; I'm quite interested in where they take her in the next couple of episodes. Hopefully all the buildup about her learning individuality isn't wasted.

Kimetsu no Yaiba 21

I want this show to become Shinobu&Tomioka adventures now.

Sort of weirded out by Nezuko becoming an issue, I guess I assumed that since Tomioka and the teacher accepted her there was a more general knowledge and assent to the situation among the corps. Feels like we should have gotten a few lines of concern from Tanjirou when he meets up with other hunters or spends days in Corps house if this is the state of things.

Not like this!
Probably one of the most hype episodes ever. Carol fighting and her song were incredible, the animation during the fight against Shem-ha was crazy good and the ending gave me goosebumps

You can really tell this must've been from very early in the manga chronologically speaking, as most of this episode feels like it was trying to introduce a lot of elements we're already familiar with. I think the issue is that while the team at Wit are trying to use this time to recontextualize these ideas, they don't feel like they were presented in the script as well as they were in earlier chapters for that to work. I'd say this is the first episode so far I'd label as... fine, but little else. Thankfully, we end with the promise of another battle next episode, so hopefully we're at a point where we can move forward instead of tread old ground like most of this episode did.

Yeah, Thorfinn's childhood was actually a flashback in the manga, this was literally the second chapter in the manga

Askeladd is pretty cunning but he sees things for what they are at least. Though I am very interested to hear or see more on what drives him. Is he just around to make the most of things.

I left out the manga shortly after Thorkell showed up so I'm pretty excited to see what goes on. Thorkell arc has pretty good action at that.

That duel sure was a mood.

When the show shines, it really shines. Nice to see the police subplot start to gain some traction. As much as I like other stuff, I think this is the show I look forward to every week as I love the general aesthetic.

Now Karen is moving to conquer America. She's a bold one. I was going to make a joke about Kaguya basically being the school's counselor, but uh, then they said she pretty much was one. So Reflect Moon is temporarily splitting up as Kaguya goes to train in America. I guess it's a conclusion, but RM has done even less than Honey Cat this whole season, so I can't say I care much where they end up. They didn't even get a new song whole season. And is this going to be acknowledged in the big crossover? The real interesting part was not only Hariu/Tamaki being a thing, but them actually confirming it. Cute. Of course managers are allowed to date while their idols are not. That's the idol life for you.
