Welcome to the Summer 2019 Anime OT! The strongly rumored Dragon Ball Super Season 2 is nowhere to be found this season, so all other series can breathe a sign of relief avoiding to clash with that juggernaut when it comes to mind-share this season. Will the fifth season of Symphogear somehow become ever more outrageous and pure anime then the prior seasons? Will this adaption of Fire Force be somewhat tainted do to the likely forced darkening/anti-epilepsy changes shown in the PV? Finally the most important question we must ask ourselves for this season, will Keiki find his panty Cinderella in Hensuki: Are you willing to fall in love with a pervert, as long as she's a cutie? ? All this and more will unfold as this new season occurs!

7uW97C3.jpg

The following are some of the potential highlights for this Summer season of anime. Like always, some of these will turn into duds and unforeseen gems in this season could have been overlooked.

Included new into this season of the highlights is the Ecchi/Gore warnings which range from High through None. These are the somewhat expected levels of these two potentially off-putting aspects of an anime in each of the highlighted shows. These are iffy ranges, that could be completely thrown off both by changes from the source material and director choices. This goes for even more so for original anime or stuff that is being adapted based off properties that have no translations in the west. So, don't take them as the gospel but rather as an expected range of what you may find in each of these shows.

Huh, a BL/Shounen Ai anime adaption that is choosing source material that isn't filled with sexual assault and downright rape that has filled the adaptation market for this genre in recent years. With the only attempt of going that route during the series being called out as fucking wrong and is strongly frowned upon to put nicely. This is a nice change for this genre assuming the anime adaptation doesn't add anything unsettling that wasn't in the source material.

Sacred Beasts 1

When you've watched a civil war documentary once and go, "I have an idea!"

Ep appeared to be mostly anime original and it's a terrible place to start given what I've seen from the manga.

To the Abandoned Viewers of this Sacred Beasts Adaptation 1
After hearing about the fact that this was almost entirely anime original, the horribly inconsistent tone and bizarre pacing make so much more sense. As an introduction to the concept and world, this was about as clumsy as you could get, coming off like a show desperate to make anything about itself seem cool while simultaneously trying to spoil all the world-building that apparently comes across more organically in the manga. It doesn't help that the out-of-place humor takes what feels like something trying to emulate Youjo Senki's war aesthetic and transform it into a scene that wouldn't look out of place in a Doga Kobo rom-com, and then go right back into ultraviolence in the following scene. This was a bizarre decision that I imagine won't sit well with fans of the manga and will leave everyone else utterly confused at how sloppily put together this pilot was. If you have some interest, either check it out at your own risk or maybe just wait for the second episode, since it seems that picks up where the manga actually begins.

Summer's off to a great start!

The easiest way to tell would be to watch the pilot from the beginning of the year and see if you end up lost. The only Fate that would help you get a better grasp on El-Melloi II's Case Files is Fate/Zero since Waver Velvet was a principal character of that show and this is meant to be the further adventures of his life years after the events of that show. The plot doesn't seem like it will relate to those events, but they would give you a better indication of why he is the way he is, as well as the relevance of some of his more odd personal effects. But the reason Case Files is not called Fate is because there is no Holy Grail War this time around; this is mostly a detective procedural starring Waver Velvet and his students. Like I said, the pilot is a good barometer, so it's worth checking out if you have the time.

Isn't there a one-off OVA it's a sequel to?

There's the 24m episode 0 thing from the beginning of the year that you should probably watch and should be considered as part of this given it introduces Gray and adult Waver. No idea if the first ep is going to do the same or not.

I saw some Fate/Zero a few years ago, I know who Waver is and I can assume sad stuff happened so I'm probably good.

Will probably watch Vinland Saga, Dr Stone, and will carry on watching Kimetsu no Yaiba.

Otherwise, Enen no Shouboutai had PVs with great animation, but then people brought up the fact its got some really cringy fanservice in other threads :/

I thought this was a decent conclusion, but not as strong as season 2's. Everything kinda wraps itself up a bit too quick, a bit too neatly. (Despite the main villain still being a threat.)

Sacred Beasts 1 was kinda weird. I see what they were going for, but the tonal whiplash was jarring, particularly at the start. It's an interesting premise so I'll keep going. It wasn't bad, just a very awkward start, and hopefully the rest of the season will correct this.

I'm waiting to see who will get the Cop Craft streaming license. It being written by Shoji Gatoh has me excited, same person who wrote the Full Metal Panic novels.
