To anyone who is planning to give Kaguya-sama a try without having read the manga, because they heard a lot of positive buzz about it from manga readers:
I don't know how good the adaptation will be or which chapters they'll choose to include, but don't be surprised if the first few episodes only make you feel lukewarm about it.
After rereading the beginning again as someone who absolutely loves the rest: The early material, while still entertaining, is probably the weakest part of the manga, and it doesn't fully hit its stride with comedy greatness until what will sadly be in the second half of the anime.
It only gets better with the addition of characters, heartfelt moments, long-term setups and payoffs and the introduction of fresh running gags, way beyond the simple premise of the early chapters, but most of that will not make it into the limited scope of the anime adaptation.

This seems fairly interesting, so far, at least for fans of disaster survival scenarios in sci-fi settings or time-related shenanigans starring clueless teenagers. I think the execution is better than the underlying concept itself, for the record, but not by a huge margin. Just effective enough to keep me watching.

The protagonist is delusional, which might be a bit tiresome, yet he's not glorified for it. Kind of the opposite. Still, without an immediately charismatic lead, the series probably lacks the right spark for mass appeal though, so it's doomed to obscurity or early drops. The 3D and a couple of goofy character designs might not help either, though the general look of the show is decent.

I do feel there should be some sort of social experiment, regarding how some of these full 3D series are perceived versus reactions to the same exact show except made with 2D animation.

Holy shit that was good. I wish I hadn't read the first chapter before cause that ruined the twist for me but luckily I was still able to enjoy this. I'm so glad the art looks very good in the anime since that was what was stopping me from reading the manga. The story was interesting but not enough to offset the art for me. I'm kinda tempted to read it now though... cause I need to know what happens next! The monsters looked great and I'm intrigued about them and the world outside. The animations for Emma's and Norman's horrified faces were amazing, by the way. Whew.

Also, definitely my favorite OP of the season so far. UVERworld rocks and the visuals are fantastic.

The character art looked really neat going by the screencaps so I had my expectations in check by the time I got around to watching it. There's brief but good character animation during the more intense moments but otherwise no surprises beyond that. As multiple people have claimed it could benefit from having much better background art. There's a certain mood the character art and on going narrative seems to go for but I personally felt it never fully realizes that. Something that the background art could have made up for to an extent.

I am personally not a fan of the 'twist' at the end but it is obviously still too early to comment on the show as whole. It has a foreboding sense of dread with the what lies beyond as new information trickles in but the show twists the knife with events and characters designed to orchestrate a sense of shock. I don't think that's bad in itself (I love Danganronpa games!) but in combination with PN's more grounded tone and approach it doesn't quite appeal to me. I do hope it builds into something more than what it is now. The big reveal leaves little to wonder other than to say things are (perhaps comically) bad but it sets up the story for what's to come. I'm looking forward to see where it goes.

Tatsuki was probably smart to craft a show heavily on sci-fi mystery elements given that the unfortunate sequel to his former show, also airing this season chose not to emphasize on them much. It's an intriguing first episode set in a grim post-apocalyptic world featuring bizarre characters and abilities echoing the facets of a plant. If anything the show has already got my attention with its surreal imagery and strange characters. Wakaba is an audience surrogate that understandably brings in perspective and an unusual connection for the characters but they really don't ease him in like Kaban. I hope that it isn't as jarring in the later episodes.

well I just streamed episodes 1-21 of black clover over the last week or so. that was kinda fun! I hear the uncut versions fix a lot of art issues from the show...is the simulcast stuff that bad? should I wait until they add more uncut episodes on funimation? 🤔

Absolutely plowed through this show.. super enjoyable and the voice acting was amazing. Laughed a lot. I hope that a third season comes out eventually! I see that a film is being released at some point this year. I wish I found that Re: Zero show anywhere near as compelling.

Anyway, I think this was a better conclusion than I was expecting, but not exactly great either. The main improvement over the previous two films is Haruo actually feels more like a character than just a voice to deliver the movie's themes. He spends a lot of the film completely lost, and without giving much away, the climax of the film isn't about whether or not Godzilla can punch out Ghidorah. It's not high art, but it's an improvement over the previous films in terms of characterization. (It also helps that Metphies finally takes the stage in a fairly predictable, but still enjoyable fashion. Remember, beware aliens that are way too into nihilism porn.) It's still occasionally lapses back into thematic strumming over character beats, especially with a last minute reversal that I'm pretty divided over. (Boy, Yuko drew the short end of the stick in this story. Holy shit.)

As a whole tho, I can't help but feel these films are kinda a missed opportunity. As a whole, the trilogy is too long and plodding, and it felt like movies 1 and 2 could have been combined in some fashion.

Ah back to a show being 40% 2D. Dragon Pilot this ain't... Or is it? The premise seems to be what the garbage final third of Dragon Pilot did but making a whole anime out of it.

Online Auction. You and me both, prices on a lot of these have skyrocketed as time has gone on, I've looked back on previous listings throughout the years and winced at some of the low prices some have gone for. As it stands I have a decent collection so I can't complain.

i paid an absurd price for an original dragonball z cel i gifted to someone. I don't regret it, but I wish i had taken as much time choosing something for myself as I did for them lol

I'm watching Chihayafuru and I met the Queen.

She is the typical shounen rival who is the strongest but she is weird and cute, too.

I like her.

Interesting choice to start with the love story right away but at least the animation has not suffered. Again the OP is a sight to behold. Mob continues to be the most relatable OP character ever.

I actually enjoyed the second film though it was nothing great. Three trilogy overall was a big let down despite having some cool aspects like gigantic Ultra Godzilla and Mechagodzilla being an entire nanomachine city/weapon. However the pacing could be atrocious, the other monsters are mostly wasted and a lot of the world and history seemed really undercooked outside of the basic premise.

my real joy is in bargain diving and finding something that i want but that nobody else on the planet cares about so i get it for no money

failing that i want a dragon ball z action cel or a kyoto animation sakuga cel. it will never happen tho

Ooh, Roselia gets their own op too. Yeah this season is going to be all Poppin'Party/Roselia as suspected. So we've got a Rokka/Asuka/Ako friendship trinity. Could lead somewhere in the game. Of course Kasumi had no actual plan when she announced their live. Huh, so Circle does still exist after all. Still bullying it and Marina. I like how Arisa has no faith in the others aside from Saaya to handle logistics. Sayo seems to have softened up more than I expected, but Yukina remains the hardass. She's still nice, but she doesn't lighten up or mince words. She's definitely got a soft spot for Kasumi though. Roselia isn't made out to be invincible with their fainting spell, which is appreciated. And so we come to the crux of the season. Popipa certainly aren't bad, but if they want to be in the same sphere as the big bands they'll have to really step up their game. And in the B-plot another band will probably form. Much better for anything beyond fanservice, though I do admit to missing HHW a bit.

Studio Ponoc's short film series premiered in theaters tonight. Had no idea Isao Takahata was tied to the project as a director before he died so it was nice that there was an appreciation to him at the end. As for the three short films, I would rank them:

  1. Life Ain't Gonna Lose
  2. Invisible
  3. Kanino & Kanina
Loved "Life"'s subject matter and animation style. Invisible can be depressing but also funny. Kanino & Kanina was alright (had no idea the little sibling was a boy until it was brought up in the interview with the producer)

Same about the younger sibling. I enjoyed the style of Invisible the most, a nice mix of polish and grittiness that fits well with the pallet.

Blanka is right Haruo, you can't simply let the best thing that's ever happened to you just fly away!

Also, it's pretty good. I was intitially skeptical after the first episode where I worried Haruo came off too unlikable to a romance lead, but he has a quiet charm to him. That kinda sums up the show really. It's not terribly flashy, and some of the CG is a bit awkward, but it's solid.

I just watched Planet With last night and I thought it was one of the best anime I've seen from last year. Definitely recommend it.
