It's a romcom with more weight in the comedy side.
For me, it's a bit more than that because the thing that makes me want to continue watching it is the psychological warfare. My favorite segments by far have been the Kaguya vs Miyuki internal thought process battle ones. If it was really all romcom, I wouldn't last.

What genre would you call Kaguya-sama? Just romance feels wrong for me.

you should compare Tokyo Ghoul anime to the manga sometime #_#
Root of Aogiri Tree was great, and TK from ling tosite sigure provides great music. Tokyo Ghoul at its core has a pretty awesome story and its highly emotional. Always how can one not like Hide and Ken Kaneki? Or Mr Sauce and his team. The dorm was pretty fun times.

I could never get into the manga cause the art. So I have no first-hand knowledge on if it adapted the manga in a respectable and dignified manner.

I'd like to clarify that there should never be any concern for people who wants to post views that go 'against the grain'. Everyone can post their impressions or views here. I'm not going to attack you just because you like a series I don't. This is always pointless because matters of taste can't be argued. Of course, if you're interested in debating what makes a work successful, or how a series handles representation, or what themes a series is examining - then we may have a more in-depth, more critical discussion because then there's something 'meaty' to talk about. I understand lots of people aren't interested in going that far - they just want to post some impressions of an anime they like and see what other people thought. There's room for all of that here.
I think that people just don't like it or feel left out of the discussions if the only form of engagement is over a matter of disagreement given that they seem to be overwhelmed(?) by the criticisms and they don't want to have a deeper discussion on it. Engagement is like half the reason people even bother with a community. There's definitely room as you said and it's why I continue posting here but the extent is up to the individual.

I will say I don't understand why Fairy Tail gets crapped on so much though. As I originally said "a good waste of time if you don't mind fairly standard shonen with a good sound track... sure? " Aka if you want to watch battles and just have some fun it's good. It's not like it's bad at what it does, it just doesn't have the storylines that grip me like FMA or One Piece does. There are a number of series I consider to have a better go of it then Fairy tail, the first 133 eps of naruto or first 60 some episodes of bleach are easily way better to me than the equivelent episodes in fairy tail. But I still watch fairy tail (granted I still need to finish the last season and catch up on the current one) because overall it's enjoyable enough. Best ever, nah, but it's not a series that is just horrible without any good ideas or decent fights.

At some point, you realize how one-note it is and how unwilling it is to commit to results and it's hard to find any form of excitement. The characters feel alright for the most part, but there's simply no stakes involved to make it even interesting. Manga wise as well, the ecchi elements get ratcheted up further as you go along and gets some torture esque porn up in there, so at that point, you're pretty much there for the lewd shit, because it has nothing else to offer. Considering you can't refund the time you wasted, you might as well do something better with your time.

I'm going to finish Wotakoi today. It's a fun series, but I want mooooore. I think the romance is a lot better than in Recovery of an MMO Junkie, more relatable somehow. I'm going to be a bit sad if they don't continues the series, but at least the manga is being published in my country.

Folks, I think Penguindrum might be my favourite Ikuhara show. More than Utena. I know that's blasphemous but I can't deny these feelings anymore.

the timeline is totally screwed I will grant you that. The only way the show makes any sense is if it takes place in a reverse hyperbolic time chamber that instead of turning 1 day into a year it turns 100 days into 1 when it comes to aging and progression of characters.

the series has been running for 23 years and officially I think 6 months have passed in the story :P

I also won't disagree that some of the episodic cases get a bit out there, even if they are in general based off actual cases that the creator researches and then redesigns for his manga. I've never claimed the series was perfect, but most of the major arcs that take place are some of the best writing in shounen. They are well planed out, well set up, involve great characters, and lots of intelligent well polished writing. The downside of which is they really don't start paying off until like 200 episodes into the anime lol.

but yeah, don't think I'm trying to say Conan is vastly superior to Fairy Tail. I'm just saying Fairy Tail isn't as good.
For comparison the ratings I gave the shows on MAL

Conan - 9/10
One piece - 10/10
FMA - 10/10
Fairy Tail - 8/10 (first series rating)
I gave the first series of naruto 7/10, though the only reason it is below fairy tail is because of the 80 episodes of filler to end the series.
bleach is a 6/10 (but the first 60 episodes or so are a 9/10)

I prefer My hero academia to both fairy tail and conan though :P

I find Natsu to be equally as annoying as Naruto most of the time.
I like gray, but I got tried of his stripping gag the moment it started so most of the time I'm annoyed with him outside of the combat
Erza is fun, but she is constantly used as a vessel for fan service, and is typically done dirty. The universe constantly tells me she is way stronger than Natsu or Gray, but in almost any given arc it's Natsu who rises up instead of Erza.
I like Lucy as a character, but she is almost always poorly used in the arcs and often is just there having no business being with the rest of them.
Also bleach and naruto don't have Happy. which is a huge plus as far as the main cast goes for those shows because 99% of the time Happy is just annoying.

That being said, Overall I think the cast of fairy tail is indeed more interesting than Naruto or Bleach, just the arcs they are apart in aren't as interesting as the respective primes of those series to me.

you complain about the promised neverland adaption.

I dunno, maybe I just can't hide my love for talking cats. And while Natsu and Naruto are equal brands of annoying, Natsu doesn't spend the first half of his series being garbage in a fight. Plus Fairy Tail doesn't have a Sasuke or a Sakura. Yeah, Natsu "saves the day", but Erza accomplishes a lot of victories that are usually total BS. Some which jump the shark even for me.

I didn't expect the brothers to meet this early. I guess Tokamaru isn't a bad guy compared to what little we saw of him in the other episodes which is cool. Will be interesting to see what he does when he figures out at what costs his father's lands became the way they are.

Great episode as usual.

This is what I'm looking forward to as well. Antagonists who are not inherently evil make for some of the most interesting confrontations. I hope to see him struggle with the choice of protecting his land and people while being made aware of what an evil person his father is and how he royally fucked over his older brother.

if promised neverland is a train-wreck of an adaption, the tokyo ghoul adaption is the nuclear apocalypse. It treats the manga with no respect and changes the lead character from a semi intelligent interesting character to a generic shounen protag in a series that wasn't a shounen series to start with.

Ken Kaneki is a moron who deserved to die many times over in the anime, while in the manga he is actually a character worth following.

For example in the anime he ignores his friends and goes and hangs out with gourmet and just eats the food not caring and gets drugged that way and thus should have died.

in the manga he listens to his friends, doesn't want to get involved with gourmet, gets blackmailed and forced to go there, refuses the eat the food, and then is drugged because the room fills with gas.

Same end result, but because he was trying to be careful you don't feel the need to root for Darwin's Law

and that isn't even starting to get into the changes they made about when information is presented or how which often took more subtle and interesting things and turned them into the equivalent of flashing neon signs.

It would be much like if you decided to take the source material for death note and instead turn it into a gag comedy :/

Running Boys 21

Uh, I'm surprise King is running with Shinji, while Kakeru is going to run with Fujioka. Kinda of a weird choice? The series isn't really focused on sport rivality like other similar series, but Shinji is entirely defined by his dislike for Kakeru and spent like 21 episodes shitting on him.

So I have been recommended Kemono Friends yet again, what should I expect once I do find the time to watch it?

Yeah it will be really interesting. These kinds of characters are always cool, especially when you think they are supposed to be a cliché but turn out to be more than that.

The first time we saw him he looked as if he was one of those rich spoiled boys so this episode was a nice treat. The fact he could hold his own and looked after his people while still being under the impression his father is a good guy is great.

I am wondering how close we are until Hyakkimaru reunites with his mother and father. I was thinking it will happen around the last episode but this episode destroyed my expectations.

this is very disappointing like, I needed him to finally just tell Kakeru he wanted to be his friend and wanted his attention, why they split them up to put him up against this is like saying having Kagekaya suddenly have Kuroo as his rival instead of Oikawa, etc.

Dororo - 10

I guess Mappa productions will always be reduced to a fraction of their initial animation splendor after half a dozen episodes or so. The choreography was bad and the fighting stiff.

There was some pretty weird editing (if that falls under it) at the end when the two sons (kinda) meet each other. I mean, Hyakkimaru finishes off the demon but it seems ambiguous whether Tahomaru and co even noticed. Then some moments later Taho and company just drift past the monster which Hyakkimaru apparently stood on the entire time after killing it?

Why wouldn't they have a talk with him? There's this huge undertaking to killing the demon and when some weird guy shows up to land the finishing blow you just...bugger off? So bizarre.

I'll keep watching until the next weak episode where I'll drop out.

there's an anime twitter trend where people are using a shindanmaker to generate extremely generic anime girls of themselves and then drawing them and it's quite good

that is all

Wow, yeah, Slime really ended on a dull note there. That extended recap montage wasn't really necessary and they could have used that time to, I don't know, show something actually interesting. I hope these side story episodes coming up are a return to form.

speaking of which, this seems like the most likely thread to get some decent answers about Sukeban Deka. What's the best version of it, probably the movies right? I tried reading the manga and it was kinda just a mess.

Hugtto Precure - Futari wa Precure - All Star Memories

Hugtto's big solo film... is yet another crossover. Because that's what this season really needed. The All Stars movies have been more miss than hit as of late, but the one in the show was actually pretty good if you ignore how it hurt the actual story. So how does this one land? First off, I kind of hate the premise of this movie. You go through all the trouble of not only bringing back every single main Cure (RIP Echo), but all the seiyuus as well, setting up the biggest magical girl crossover of all time, allowing all these varying personalities and experiences to bounce off each other before culminating in an epic fight, and you turn them all into babies? That's how you decide to celebrate the big 15th anniversary? Really?

Now I get that having all the seiyuus doesn't mean you can go all out on this. Too many characters to deal with, very limited time, and the voice acting budget is still limited. And the target audience is young girls, not cynical grown-ups, so they're more likely to enjoy this kind of shenanigans. Except the target audience excuse doesn't work this time, which I'll get to later. Either way, making all the past heroines babies and damseling them yet again (the All Stars movies pull this way too often) is just lame. They can't do anything cool or have much funny background interactions in this state. There's a bit of that if you really look hard, but there's just so little of it that the massive crossover feels pointless. And they don't even do anything interesting with it like get all the babies to fight or something. Could've used the gimmick more effectively at least. Even the end fight was pretty lame from this view. No real crossover action, just everyone pulling off their signature moves and phrases, but now in CG. This all makes for nice marketing that I'm sure paid off in the box office, but the weekly show pulled off better fanservice, and that's kind of sad.

Nagisa and Honoka got some decent treatment at least. The luster of the OG and current teams working together is lost when it's the third time in like 4 months (if you saw this in theaters), but they were actually used enough with a few decent moments to justify them being in this. Mostly Nagisa as is custom, but I got used to that long ago. It's the cliche demonstrating how strong their friendship is we've seen all the time, transcending even memories, but it still works overall. The Hugtto team minus Hana on the other hand, eh. This should be their movie, and they get a decent amount of screen-time, but they still feel cheated. Ruru manages well at least, stealing the scene whenever she gets a bit of focus. That's the robot for you. Emiru is at least consistently amusing, and her being a terrible baby was kind of funny. Homare and Saaya got their own moments, especially when Saaya's geek self came out, but it was still more undercooked than I liked. Robbed from their movie just like the show.

So with all those complaints, do I like this movie? Actually, yes. This comes down to three reasons. First, they really nail the theme of memories. The villain is a cursed camera that was lost and this unable to form any memories or experiences of its own. And while the how of that is unexplained and kind of lame in its own right (if random cameras can nearly destroy the world how is everyone still alive?) it fits in with the theme of how important our memories are and how much we should treasure them. Miden isn't the best villain even among All Stars (certainly not the coolest fighter), but it's set up well in both dialogue and with the various sounds it makes. One of those tragic villains that works even if you have to jump through a lot of mental hoops. Most surprisingly, they break the fourth wall to ask the audience to cheer for the Cures to get better, and in the moment it actually works. The whole theme is based around memories, and we've already seen Cures recover earlier because of their shared memories. So them being helped by 15 years of audience memory and adoration of the Cures is both thematically appropriate and ties back to the whole anniversary this is supposed to celebrate. However, this does mean they're targeting older fans at this point, which leads into some of the criticisms I mentioned earlier.

Second, very solid direction all throughout. An all CG movie may be worrying to some, but it gives some nice visual variety and looks pretty consistently from what I could tell. Well, the Precure team has a lot of experience with CG at this point. Lots of pretty shots in the villain's lair, and while the fights aren't the best, they're still decent overall. More importantly, they strike a tone early on and stick to it. This may be an action movie based on a celebration, but the cheers and jokes are rather subdued most of the time for a more somber or melancholic experience. Not depressing, but even with cute babies running around there's a sense of tension and worry the whole time. This may not be the worst threat they've faced, but they do take this seriously the whole time. And there is emotional payoff when the villain's backstory and motivations are slowly unraveled, and it's not cheap drama, but actual sadness and sympathy for what happened. Still lame because it's a lonely camera, but it's sold as well as it can be.

Finally, the main heroine herself, Hana Nono. Cure Yell. She was indisputably the center of both the show and the earlier Hugtto movie. And so maybe she's got so much of that pink bias going on that I dislike so much. But she's always been such a sound and well-written character, so I can't get angry at her. She's trying to keep it all together even with minimal support. Tying back into the main show, she learns that taking care of babies requires a lot of patience, even if it's totally understandable to want to yell at them. But beyond that, one of her biggest strengths, and possibly weaknesses, has been her endless sympathy and attempt to reach out to her villains. It was a major aspect of the first movie, it served as the crux for her rivalry with George, and it makes her both flawed and a true hero here. We get the full thought process of her trying to understand Miden and reaching out to it so that it won't be trapped in the same cycle of despair as before. The whole scene is sold very well, and while it certainly causes problems, in the end she wins with what she knows best, her compassion.

The second movie for each Precure season is often a good summary of what did and didn't work for the season. This is one case where that holds true. It's a well made movie with a strong thematic core. But it's bogged down by additional elements that don't add enough and just end up bringing the whole experience down. Should've kept it to just a Hugtto/Futari wa crossover. They had one scene that justified the massive crossover, but on the whole it wasn't worth it. As an anniversary movie, it's eh. But as a Hugtto/Futari wa movie, and especially a Cure Yell movie, I'd say it's pretty good.

Well, the Maho Girls has a good six movie run, but I guess it's time to say goodbye. I'll miss those witches. Until they decide to pull yet another massive crossover. Not sure what the best way to do it is, but if they do it again hopefully they can strike a more balanced celebration than what this ended up being.

Mob Psycho 100 II 10

Surprised by the extent they went towards highlighting side characters till Mob wakes up. Real muscles are more powerful than psychic muscles - nice touch.

Rinshi Ekoda-chan 05

It's nice to see that Yoshitomo Yonetani made good use of his opportunity given the freedom he had. Probably the most amusing bit being that he had the VA chant Ekoda-chan 28 times and used it as the BGM.
