What is your opinion on the Monogatari series? Always wanted to watch it but it's a huge time investment.

Bakemonogatari was amazing. Kisemonogatari (the movies?) were also amazing. Everything else I haven't seen or wasn't able to get into them even though there are mostly also characters from Bake. Bakemonogatari is definitely worth a worth and the movies. You could then go and watch Nise and Tsuki etc.

It has some real highs and some real lows. The first series (Bakemonogatari) is a definite high point and the second series (Nisemonogatari) is a definite low point, but sets up a bunch of characters and plot points that are essential for later arcs, including Kaiki Deshuu, who is absolutely one of my favourite characters in the whole series.
I rewatched all of it early last year and while it didn't often hold up quite as well as I would have hoped, and there's a ton of gross shit, there were still some fantastic moments scattered throughout.
I feel like you will definitely figure out quite early on if it's a show you can enjoy. Probably the most important thing to bear in mind is that many of the characters will often lie or otherwise omit truths, and a large part of the series is explicitly from the main character's perspective. I don't think it's as smart a show as it wants to be, but it's a lot smarter than a lot of anime.

Fellow anime people. I've recently joined your clan as I have just finished watching Death Note. And I really enjoyed it. It's such a fine medium to tell more unique stories. So I'm looking for some recommendations to watch next.

I'm mostly looking for something with a good story. And not some bloated adventure of the week style show. Not too many episodes would be a definite plus as well. Great action isn't important as I mainly care for a good story.

I might try Neon Genisis Evangelion (?) and One Punch Man as they are on Netflix and I've heard those names before. But I have no clue if those shows are something I'm looking for.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I've also watched Attack on Titan. Which is probably the best thing I've ever seen.

It's an amazing series if you can handle the problematic stuff.

Watch in light novel order, not anime release order btw. LN order is the way the author intended of course and it is the way Shaft intended to adapt the series, but production delays caused a few things to move around. The adaptation does not take into account the delays so each part is still faithful to the source material. With everything out, there's no reason to watch in anime release order.

Thanks! I tried to look up what these shows are about and, I'm not going to lie, they sound very silly and ridiculous. But that's the reason why I never watched anime in the first place. So I guess I should just give 'em a shot!

Since you have Netflix, I would also suggest:
Hi Score Girl
Kakegurui
Kill la Kill
Puella Magi Madoka Magica

There's plenty of things one could dump on on you but to try to limit myself to few titles probably more palatable to a relative newcomer I'd direct you to:

Fate/Zero - Starts of really slow but it's widely regarded as one of the greats - an urban fantasy battle royale of mages and their respective summons, historical figures of times past. Pretty dark and similar in tone to AoT. Persevere through the early setup and you'll be rewarded. Though, because it's a prequel story, some of the questions the story will leave you with will only be answered in (inferior) sequel series.

Mononoke - The Tv Series not the Ghibli movie. It's a set of mostly standalone monster of the arc stories but it does that with some unique facets to its story and visually is a pretty vivid experience that showcases some things that can be achieved in the hand drawn medium.

Tatami Galaxy - There's a certain amount of repetitiveness inherent in its episodic premise but I think the visual flair and directorial prowess at getting you from one end of ep to the other manage to obscure that supremely. And the ending wouldn't work as well without it. Again, one of the greats by one of the best directors.

Haikyu!! 11
So apparently their female manager is an important character? I think she's had barely 5 lines in 12 episodes and looks set to be ogled at some more next episode. Joy.
I don't think I would call her important. She's mostly there to be ogled/protected by other characters in the show.

The next manager is done in a way that actually makes her feel like a character instead of just an object to be ogled. But her role mostly ends up being used to explain volleyball terms instead of anything important to the story.

Very happy to have the Haikyu's back in my life again, and I might check out an episode or two of Nekopara cause i've always been morbidly curious about them, but never enough to sully my steam library with them

Also, after reading that Interspecies Reviewer synopsis, kinda want to check that out, though I doubt that will be licensed because it might just actually be porn

Hello, anime thread. Seeing as it's a new year I figured I should actually post something instead of just lurking.

This season I'm mostly looking forward to Hanako-kun and Runway, both of which I'm currently reading the manga for. Although I'm a bit worried for the ending of Runway if it really is only 12 episodes. I feel like 24 would have given it a much better stopping point.
I'm also really curious about pet, and hope that it turns out to be interesting.
Other than that, I'll probably check out at least a few episodes of Eizouken and Rikei ga koi as I've enjoyed what I've read from both of those.

I also tend to try the first episode of most shows where it's either original or I'm not familiar with the source, so maybe there'll be something unexpected there. But I fully expect to drop the majority of those, as I rarely follow more than 6 or so shows in one season.

Thanks for the work on the thread!

Fun looking Yuasa show and Haikyu makes it an exciting season for me. Also have some shows carrying over.

Finished and started some stuff over past couple weeks.

Honey and Clover Season 2 End
Me: Wow, Hagu rejecting both sides of the love triangle to focus on her recovery so she can create art again while Shu commits to helping someone in an act of familial love is an unexpected and perfect ending
Show: BTW this is not just familial love Shu, who is her cousin, love loves her
Me: noooooooo.

They had it! The ending was so good and then they throw in that. The combo of Hagu looking young and Shu treating her like she is his daughter throughout the series makes it tough to reconcile even if I wanted to pretend that this series was a piece of Victorian fiction... Not something that can be easily ignored on revisit like the the stuff at the end of Rakugo. Morita and Yuta parts were greater though.

I'll probably do a write up on the series as a whole down the line, since despite my misgivings about the above element of the end, I really did enjoy the show. Fantastic final scene too.

Saiki K Reawakened End
Netflix did it. They saved anime.

I can see why a couple of these like the anniversary chapter were skipped initially but generally it was as fun as always. Of the two new characters Hii definitely brought more laughs. Usually not too into the clumsy/unlucky gags but the way they did it worked for me (especially when paired with the ultimate average student).

Yugioh parody was right in my wheelhouse. Favorite random gag that made me laugh more than it should of is when he has the invisible barrier power and there is a gap between him and the chair.

Last episode also provides a much more satisfying ending. Saiki realizing that there is a part of him that enjoys helping with his powers feels like a more suitable conclusion then him sealing them off. The faces of Saiki being surprised/startled by people were great.

To parrot what I said last time this series "ended", this show is a lot of fun and I had a great time with it.

Stars Align 12 End
I hope for the creators and fans that this series gets a continuation. But if this is really the direction they are going with it than I am more than ok with getting off the ride here. That said, I am extremely curious how they are going to explain why Toma's mother hates Toma, who seems like a perfectly normal kid, to the point where she is divorcing her husband and splitting the kids in a way so that she doesn't have to deal with him.

Love the OST and there are some parts of the season I really did enjoy. Favorite random thing is when ace detective Maki somehow deduces that the one kid locked someone in the infirmary as if this was something that people do.

Fate/Zero 01
Watched this episode a year or two ago and bounced off it with this opening episode. Decided to try give it another shot after having some fun with the Waver detective show (where I was confused maybe 70% of the time. But it hit all the detective conan beats that I do so enjoy in even more ridiculous fashion and was really well made). I definitely have a better grasp on what is going on now even with the non waver stuff, which means I have absorbed a concerning amount of second hand fate knowledge /s

I wish she have more episodes, but at least she have her introduction and a proper ending
and I would like have seen more Saiki being shipper on deck
I wonder if she was that late in the manga.

Lack of good winter shows means everyone can watch Machikado Mazoku instead.
An excellent decision. Best magical girl show of the year. Praying for a season 2 announcement in the near future.

Also congratulations to it for winning the niconico internet buzzword award for 2019 for a line that's never uttered in the show or the manga.

Only anime I'm interested is the new Yuasa one and Haikyu.
As far as continuing anime it's only My Hero Academia and I guess the new Pokémon series. Really light season it seems.

Mmmm, got that new thread smell.

This season looks pretty bare, I'll probably try some stuff to see if anything sticks, but this might be a back-log season for me.

BTW, whoever recommended me Sound Euphonium, I love you forever.

I don't think this was your intention but this is a bit condescending and rude.
Sorry, but I know a lot of people that dont watch sports so I thought it was the case, in fact I explained in the second statement
I think they just misunderstood. I guess you meant the talking by the players? Not the cheering correct?
If that is the case isnt that normal in most team sports? Whenever I played football/soccer or volleyball when I was younger I talked with my teammates a lot. Communication is important

Communication is important sure. It's just silly that they stop game time to have a heart to heart. My face was the other team, like.... Ok??

Guess I'll join one of these seasonal OTs, since I'll actually be watching quite a bit. Already disappointed in zero mention of Somali on either page :x First ep is up on CR already, ahead of the Japanese broadcast. Started reading the GORGEOUS manga (thanks to MAL giving freebie chapters) and had no idea an anime was out so soon!

Watch some adorableness!

That is common in volley, they celebrate each point with their teammates to boost morale. I guess in the anime it is exaggerated

Pretty slow season for me, just four shows:

Eizouken: In for Yuasa.
Kuutei Dragons: Love me some dragon hunting.
Magia Record: More for cultural literacy than any strong desire to see a Madoka followup, but I'm sure it'll be good.
Nekopara: Like...y'know, nya.

Darwin's Game
Infinite Dendrogram
Isekai Quartet2
Toilet-bound Hanako-kun
If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I Would Die
Smile Down the Runway
Sorcerous Stabber Orphen
ID: INVADED

and if I feel like hating myself one day
Interspecies Reviewers (looks so bad lol)
Plunderer (looks horrible but maybe it will be the next Needless for me :P)

there might be other things, but I'm just planning to watch stuff funimation dubs for now lol.

oh and I suppose if there is a decent amount of changes I will watch the directors cut of Re:zero.

I'm happy to eat crow on this show with me leaving it out of the highlights. Sadly that could be contributed to the first PV for this show, which gave me a negative view of what the show would look like (the ehish CG model of the Golem) for most of an episode. This anime seems like it will be a nice slice of life (with some dark undertones to the world's society), that won't turn into a dreaded U**** D**** type situation. The animation is nothing to brag about, but its serviceable for what the show wants; more importantly it had a decent cat walk cycle animation, the go to sign of how well "animated" a show might be. Visually the strongest element has to be given to the background artwork. While it is no Studio Pablo type work (do wonder what studio did it or if it was inhouse), the stylization works great for the type of world that the anime is going for. I'll be happy to watch this each week assuming it doesn't shit the bed production wise or somehow pulls off a U**** D**** .

I was hoping that the world in the anime would have even more detail, like how the manga is ultra-detailed in linework, but I do like how the art style works in the anime as its own thing.
