The person in question is a venture capitalist with a history of bigotry. He self identifies in the video.

One of the guys threatened replied in the thread

It's almost like its turned into a game now since we have phones to capture video. This type of behavior should have been stomped out centuries ago but it lets you know who America was and wasn't built for.

I know it's just plain racism, but what's his desperate logic going to be to explain it? WeWork's whole thing is a revolving door churn of people so the gym will never have regulars.

I don’t understand this line of thinking. It’s not your job to police the building. Fuck off! If you are concerned just let management know.

Apparently he replied to someone via email lol.

It's in the thread.

It could be made up, though as there is no other verification than a screenshot. It is Twitter, not the Washington Post lol.

However, it's still bullshit. If these were some white basic bros bringing in clients or partners for a workout, he would've ignored them. It's rainmaking for white people, but for black professionals, it's loitering.

I believe this is a guy who sold his mutli-million dollar home and moved because the Lake it was near was given a Native American name.

I find it hard to believe that this is the first time he's ran into someone who's brought their friends/family to the gym with them.

@brownngem

I just called the number and his voicemail said “Hi this is Stan Herman, I am no longer associated with f2 group with Tom Austin. His actions are not right and I don’t want you to assume I have the same beliefs”

I was ready to leave a WHOLE voicemail

Yep.

Ending a years-long debate over honoring a defender of slavery, Minnesota’s Supreme Court ruled 5-2 Wednesday that the commissioner of the state’s Department of Natural Resources had authority to restore the name of Lake Calhoun to Bde Maka Ska, as the Dakota people call it.
The name’s baggage left a bad taste in the mouths of many Minneapolis residents, though, and in 2017 the Minneapolis Park Board began working to restore the name given to it by the region’s native Dakota people, Bde Maka Ska (buh DAY muh KAHS ka), or White Earth Lake.

The parks board and Hennepin County Board found that they did not have the authority to change the name themselves, and sent the issue to the Department of Natural Resources, which took public comment on the issue and decided to restore the name of the lake in January 2018.
Enter an organization known as Save Lake Calhoun, led by local venture capitalist Tom Austin, who lives near the lake. Austin gathered signatures for a petition opposing the name change, and petitioned the Minnesota Court of Appeals for a writ of certiorari. That petition was dismissed, but an appeal of a different case — a petition for a writ of quo warranto in Ramsey County, based in the state capital of St. Paul — was taken up by the Minnesota Court of Appeals after being denied in district court.
Austin did not reply to a request for comment Wednesday evening, but the Minneapolis Star Tribune published his opinion piece after the Court of Appeals decision, saying that while he had no love for Calhoun the man, he had challenged the decision because “in the end, I was disgusted by how everyday Minnesotans had been steamrollered by politicians, the media and activists and forced to adopt a name (Bde Maka Ska) that we didn’t support.”
Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, whose district includes the lake, tweeted: “This decision corrects a historical injustice and embodies the values we want to leave future Minnesotans.”

I can't imagine interacting with anyone at the gym outside of a quick nod greeting or a "Are you done with x?" at most. There seemed to be a lot of open equipment there as well. Add in that lake thing mentioned above and yeah... only one thing to conclude here.

This is so absurdly racist that it’s almost certain to be true
I was stunned when I first heard about it. The dude is such a loser. So petty and ridiculous and hateful. Squarehard found the story and posted it.
Yep.

Thanks :) I couldn't find a good link to post.

Minneapolis, again?

Amazing how this guy decided to keep showing his ass after the Bde Maka Ska debacle, too.

Unfortunately my experience with Minneapolis has been a lot of white moderates and liberals (full disclosure: I am a white liberal) thinking "it's 2020, racism is over," and not really being equipped to confront these issues as they arise. There's plenty of casual bigotry and xenophobia directed towards our Somali population, for instance. Hopefully the silver lining to stuff like this is it continues to shine a spotlight that no, our shit doesn't smell better than anyone else's, and it pains me to say that because there is a lot that I think our city gets right, but we're far from perfect.

Even if some of these people are friends of a tenant, I can see loads of available equipment that isn't in use. This is clearly a racist guy who doesn't want to share the space with black people, not a concerned paying tenant. If the place was packed and the guy couldn't work out? Maybe his story would have a shred of believability.

Well, that is pretending that he isn't a notorious racist with a history of being a total racist. Which he is.

NYC was in the limelight for some serious racism yesterday. If that can happen, unfortunately, no place is truly safe.

Racism is as pervasive throughout society as I could ever remember in my lifetime.

The amazing thing is that in the moment, people that do this feel 100% justified and righteous. Is so deep in them the racism that they feel that this situation is completely different from all the others and this is not racist.

Kinda hard to combat that. Im so glad cellphones and videos are helping.
