Hey guys, I recently bought a base PS4 and I've been very disappointed in the visuals so far...mostly because of the resolution of the games. Coming from PC I'm used to a mostly clean image at 1440p and the fall to 1080 has been surprisingly annoying to me. I just can't get past how blurry the screen looks and I feel like it's ruining the visuals of H:ZD for me. Anyway does anyone use a 1440p monitor with a PS4 pro, and is there a drastic difference between the base model and PRO?

Yeah it sucks, even if you buy a pro, it supports 1080p, it supports 4k, but it does not support 1440p. The XBX does will.

Now that they have system wide supersampling they could easily implement 1440p output if they wanted, I think.

I don't want to make this about console wars...

I have my Pro hooked up to my 1080p monitor and I recently bought a XBX that so far is on the same screen but as soon as the Spring update rolls out (it will add 1440p output support) I'll move it next to my PC.

For me, Pro's biggest flaw is that despite most enhanced games render at 1440p or very close to it, there's no output support.

My monitors are 23,8" (1080p) and 25" (1440p) and are next to each other. The difference in clarity and DPI is big.

Is this something patchable? I'd upgrade to a 1440p monitor if so.

It totally is, Microsoft is doing it with the Spring update which is on beta right now. Out of the box XBX supports only 720p, 1080p and 4k but they're adding 1440p and FreeSync support to account to the small but vocal userbase that plays on such screens.

Yeah and it sucks because I don't have the option to select 1440p. Only 1080p so supersampling is the only thing I can do. Sony said that the PS4 Pro was to keep people from migrating over to PC but it's definitely not for people looking to do the reverse.

It really sucks because the Pro has plenty of games that have 1440p support and we're stuck at 1080p or 4K. Nothing in between.

Even if they do a firmware update, OP has base PS4 so it's not going to help. I guess part of the problem is that the monitor is up-scaling from 1080p to 1440p and that's never good. I imagine the PS4 is looking worse on this monitor than it would on a 1080p display.

I use my PS4 Pro on a 27" monitor.
Since Sony is too lame to patch in 1440 output (even though some of their games render at said resolution), I don't use scaling.
In other words, I play at 1080 with black borders. Not the ideal solution, but at least the image is crisp.

Base model ps4 won't do you any good sadly. I have a 4k monitor for pc and 55 inch 1080p tv for ps4 and there is a massive difference in using the base ps4 on 4k monitor and 1080p tv. Ps4 Pro may get 1440p support in the future but the base ps4 won't.

PS4Pro will downscale it's 2160p image to 1080p and that image is then upscaled to 1440p. It's bad and doesn't make sense.

1080p just isn't going to look good on most 1440/4k monitors. Better off using a 1080p TV/monitor.

Did you read OP's last sentence? It sugests he is looking into buying a ps4 pro if he could use his monitor.

Hi which monitor do you use ? You can scale the screen in the OSD for black bars ? I'm looking for a monitor 1440p which could be able to put black bars in 1080p

Thank you

oh thank you ! Maybe now i will consider to buy a 1440p... Before i wanted to buy 1080p 144hz and later a 4K monitor... I just hope PS5 will handle 1440p output...

The monitor is a good deal, I bought it at 750 euro, it's a lot cheaper now.
And if you have a PC, 1440 really is the sweet spot for good fidelity at a reasonable cost for CPU/GPU.

I have no clue Sony will offer 1440 output, but I hope so.

I need to buy a Freesync version, because i don't want to buy nvidia card for now. Too bad that Gsync monitor doesn't work on AMD GPU.

I did, Pro on U3415W, it looked stretched out and obviously not really sharp at all.

I just bought this monitor for a new PC that's still on the way.

I plan on streaming PS4 and eventually PS5. I've hooked my base PS4 up to it and I didn't notice a blurry picture. Can some monitors scale better than others?

From my experience ? No.

Everything that's not native on a monitor will look like ass.

Some do scale better than others, yes. But you're still scaling up from a 1080p picture, so it's gonna look worse by nature than a native 1080p screen or downscaling from a 4K image.

I use my PS4 Pro with my LG 27GL850 1440p monitor (widely reputed to be one of the best monitors available right now).

It thankfully accepts a 4K signal from the PS4, which apparently many monitors cannot do. So the monitor is definitely downsampling from 4k, rather than the 1080p upscale limitation that it sounds like many 1440p monitors suffer from.

FFVIIR looks absolutely gorgeous on it. To the extent that I'm considering whether downsampling to 1440p is better than upscaling to 4K, especially considering PS5.

I mean if you leave OLED and HDR to the side, it probably would be right? Or am I talking crazy talk?
