AOC says she woke up to stacks of photos from FBI showing "people who want to kill" her

Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez details some of the death threats and abuse aimed toward her and those closest to her in a recent cover story for Vanity Fair.

"I used to wake up in the morning and literally get a stack of pictures that were forwarded by Capitol police or FBI. Like, 'These are the people who want to kill you today,' " AOC told Vanity Fair this week.

The hate extended to her family, including her brother, Gabriel, who would receive calls from the FBI warning him not to open his mail due to bomb threats, according to the publication. Other targets of abuse include the designer of her Cesar Chavez–inspired campaign posters, who would receive death threats, and her former dean at Boston University, who would regularly receive emails calling him the n-word.

A month into her first term in the House of Representatives in 2019, a Coast Guard lieutenant and self-described white nationalist, Lt. Christopher Hasson, was arrested in Maryland with a stockpile of weapons as part of a plot to kill Ocasio-Cortez, Senator Kamala Harris and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, among others. Hasson was sentenced to 13 years in prison earlier this year after pleading guilty to federal gun and drug charges.

i've had a few crazy people make threats like that against me and it's really not fun to deal with.

and its happened quite a bit here too in canada with extremists targeting politicians and it's all pretty much swept under the rug because they're just angry white guys. and it's really fucking infuriating that it's been normalised.

look at fauci, look at leslie stahl. this is continually happening and it's always coming in one direction. yet nothing is ever really said or done about it on a national level. i wonder why

I mean it's good to know those people are on some kind of watch list, but it seems like the authorities would rather wait for someone to be killed before putting these people in jail for the rest of their lives. Why not try to preventatively save lives by locking up people who threaten the lives of other people online?

maybe because the grotesquely high number of jail cells in the prison system known as the United States of America would still not be enough to house every motherfucker who made death threats to public figures on the Internet.

You also underestimate the opposite side of the hate. There are a lot of people who look up to and admire her. There is a lot of young people who aren't even old enough to vote that love her. She's an absolute asset and will make a great candidate whenever she chooses to run
