AOC with a pretty rational take on the Democratic Party.

She uses the example of not being able to get a floor vote on M4A. It's a legitimate concern for the left who want to get important policies enacted against an uphill battle from both the Democratic and Republican parties.

Yeah she's not really wrong about this. Especially when you look at what now passes as the normal conservative from the republican side.

and I totally agree with that statement. In fact, universal healthcare and free public college are not leftist ideas in other countries. Those are part of the center lane.

This is further proof that this two-party bullshit needs to kick the can.

It's just so apparent.

Waiting for the hordes of Liberals who use her as a PoC prop to come in and say she doesn't know what she's talking about, as they suspiciously do every other time she makes this point.

That's not really news to anybody. America as a whole is further to the right than most developed countries.

She's right. Can't wait for Dems to whine about her pointing this out and then in the same breath argue that "people just love their private health insurance companies, we can't take that from them!!".

Bizarre that people vilify her for comments like this or her one about Joe Biden and multiparty democracies.

Because the United States isn't other places, we got the two party system, Democratic party is a big tent and attacking fellow party members isn't seen as good for the whole unity message that is also being preached in the face of Trump.

Reposting my comment from PoliEra:

This article places numerous international parties on an ideological continuum (halfway down). The Democrats qualify as center-left by international standards. On the chart, they sit just a hair to the right of UK Labour; the two circles almost touch. They differ not at all from any standard social democratic party in Europe. We've simply never adopted that terminology.

She's spouting ~~~Enlightened European~~~ nonsense from Twitter. If she thinks she'd be further left than a center-left party in Europe, fine, but calling Democrats "center-right" is wrong.

In short: she's wrong.

One day we'll get a full Marx quote out of her. She's alluded to him before ("We should not be haunted by the specter of being automated out of work.")

The fact that many Americans still think free public healthcare is some kind of radical left wing policy is proof of how far right the country has gone.

Hopefully we are getting more AOCs who are unafraid to speak about the sham of the Democrat/Republican divide. Party loyalty is not a valuable trait.

Eh, she's right and she's wrong. Setting aside the relativity of all this, it's true that the Dems are more conservative on economics than they'd have to be to qualify as a left-wing party. But on a whole host of other issues - which you can try to tie back to economics if you want, but are ultimately their own thing and require their own solutions - the Dems are pretty progressive by global standards. It more or less averages out left of center.

We need to keep working to change it. AOC is a great leader.

Let's elect Bernie Sanders and progressives in 2020.

There was one thread here where everyone was being so condescending to her, it was really odd for a forum like this.

I mean, they're not particularly left but I'd say they classify as at least center-left. How different are Dems from Uk labour or Trudeau's party in Canada?

How to alienate would be voters 101.

I mean she's probably right, but saying this before election isn't the best idea.

from a Canadian point of view; the US's Democratic Party is a Centre-RIGHT party

it's not even Centre; it's plain CENTRE-RIGHT

Republicans are FAR-RIGHT to EXTREME-FAR-RIGHT

The method they use in this is suspect to say the least. I don't believe they're weighting the Democratic party manifesto against other Left parties in Europe properly. It's also not enough to only look at a party's manifesto, but also how they govern and vote. The Democratic party being a big tent party makes this extra important.

They.... aren't more conservative than they'd have to be to qualify as left wing. You don't have to embrace bad outdated policy ideals to qualify as "left."

Yep. Good progressives in America should be to the left of the Democratic Party and pulling them over/replacing the old compromised hacks.
