AP: Trump pressed aides on Venezuela invasion, US official says

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — As a meeting last August in the Oval Office to discuss sanctions on Venezuela was concluding, President Donald Trump turned to his top aides and asked an unsettling question: With a fast unraveling Venezuela threatening regional security, why can’t the U.S. just simply invade the troubled country?

The suggestion stunned those present at the meeting, including U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and national security adviser H.R. McMaster, both of whom have since left the administration. This account of the previously undisclosed conversation comes from a senior administration official familiar with what was said.
But shortly afterward, he raised the issue with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, according to the U.S. official. Two high-ranking Colombian officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid antagonizing Trump confirmed the report.

Then in September, on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, Trump discussed it again, this time at greater length, in a private dinner with leaders from four Latin American allies that included Santos, the same three people said and Politico reported in February.

The U.S. official said Trump was specifically briefed not to raise the issue and told it wouldn’t play well, but the first thing the president said at the dinner was, “My staff told me not to say this.” Trump then went around asking each leader if they were sure they didn’t want a military solution, according to the official, who added that each leader told Trump in clear terms they were sure.

Happy 4th of July, everyone!

If we don’t have a military conflict with SOME country before the midterm elections (Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, Syria, who knows) in some desperate attempt to improve Trump’s poll numbers, I’ll be shocked...

I'm sure invading a latin american country will go over just as well as the last few times we did this.

Such a shrewd businessman. Even more morally bankrupt than his casino was monetarily.

Venezuela
This doesn't come out of left field. There's a sizeable part of Venezuelan population and exiles pushing for this and citing Panama as a positive example.

I agree with his staff. Trump saying it like this just hurts the chances of it actually happening.

Good. Venezuela is fucked up beyond repair and there's riots on the street because of the corruption, the income inequality and they're running out of water. It's going to lead to a North American migrant crisis. Remember, businesses pulled out over night as the state was failing.

Cause history tells us we always make countries better when we invade.

Chavez's "21th century socialism" combined with Maduro's incompetence (and a culture of gov corruption) is what caused Venezuela's plight. Foreign military won't help with that.

Well it certainly can't get any worse down there so what do they have to lose? People are eating their pets because they're starving to death.

As if the situation for those humans isn't dire enough already, but adding a war to their lifes would not, in no possible scenario, in no possible dimension and at no possible time make their lifes ANY better .... "what do they have to lose" ... good grief.

Also, a war, and invading another country is a declaration of war, would also lead to a bigger migrant crisis ... do you see what happens in Syria? You think all those Syrians fleeing their country would've done that if there was no war against them by their own "ruler"?

It's a Monty Python bit.

But not funny.

What the hell makes you think dropping bombs on them will make it better?

Best solution is to accept asylum seekers and hope things get better.

Explain why. Panama became a booming country after Noriega was sacked. And he would have likely ruled until his death if the US hadn't done what they did.
First of all completely illegal (surprise) which is like a major problem when it comes to international law. Second: their intentions were ofc very vague. They threw a hissy fit about oh no le poor civilians when it was really about drug trafficking. Also: displacement of thousands of people, death of hundreds or thousands of civilians, severe destabilization of Panama's economy. Sure, the outcome was alright but that doesn't legitimize the invasion because Noriega would've probably fallen without it and the transfer in power could have been organic.

Venezuele isn't really hurting anyone yet, although British Guinea, Aruba and Suriname might fall victim to Maduro's territorial ambitions later on (if the falklands war thought us anything it's that attacking a colony is a great way for a dictator to distract the population). But Trump -being a businessman- should be wise to question wherether it can afford to spend money and lives on an invasion while gaining absolutely nothing from it. Probably better to leave it as a lasting example of what a communist paradise truly looks like.

Yeah, Venezuela has a lot of problems and Maduro is the cause of many of them, but the US is already "helping" with crushing sanctions, aiding the capitalist class to make specific items scarce, and openly funding the opposition - something they would cry about if it was a US candidate receiving said funding. It's not working. So call for another war aggression. I hope you know what you're saying. Too many empire babies so used to living in a nation that doesn't live under threat of invasion and don't know what it's like to live in a warzone. Calling for an invasion and the death of many, many people is just cruel, heartless, and stupid.

We can ask the Syrians, Iraqis, Afghanis, parts of South America, some parts of Africa and you could probably throw the Vietnamese in there as well.

Dropping bombs and shooting people isn't how you solve problems like this, it only makes it worse.

The US has a downright shit track record when it comes to "regime change".

How many times have we disposed of a leader, propped up a new government only to have it blow up in our faces.

The only reason Trump would even think about attacking Venezuela is to bolster his numbers (same applies to North Korea and Iran, btw). He doesn't give two shits about the people who live there. The minute the bombs are done dropping, he'll ignore their pleas (or throw them in camps like he's doing now).
