Fully agree with you MrKlaw, the only thing I would miss on the iPhone 11 is an OLED screen. Welp, maybe next year the base model will get one.

honestly I don't know I'll even miss that. for a phone I dip in and out of I'll probably barely notice. I will miss the tele lens. I have almost no use for an ultrawide so a combo tele/wide would be a perfect set up for me. But potentially Apple knew that and so they've deliberately left the 'portrait' lens just on the pros.

The Xr screen is really good. You'll notice it in the darkness, for example in bed, but in daylight? I'm not sure about that tbh.

Same here. This year, if i were in the market for a phone, and with the 'learnings' from the previous 2 generations - i'd go for the "non pro" model.

Like, we're used to Apple withholding features that could work on older phones for new hardware.
But this year, it's kind of a first that the successor to the "base tier" phone (the iPhone 11) gets (software based) features which last year's "Pro tier" phone isn't getting.

Or maybe the first time was last year, when the XR clearly got "SmartHDR" but the iPhone X didn't.

Like, it's a difference when the 6S gets live photos and the 6 doesn't ...
But no Night Mode or Quick Video on the XS is just nasty.

But my original statement might very well change if next year's "pro" phones get features beyond just that extra camera lens that differentiate it from the base tier.

Wide angle is great. Like, if you're trying to photograph a room, or a "view" (pano mode sucks, don't @ me) ... anything that requires a larger FoV because the subject of the photo is of larger scale and not an object / person you're focusing on.

Wait, night mode is exclusive to the iPhone 11's??? How is that not a simple software update. Didn't google add it to all pixels ever made last year?

it's only software, right? And the last years phone are still insanely fast. Or is it some magic hardware they didn't mention in the keynote?

does the photos app have any way to manually tag a person or are you just stuck with whatever the app picks out for you?

You can change the person who they thought it was, but you can't manually tag a face that it didn't detect. Very annoying since I actually face tag my pets but I HAVE to do that on a Mac, not even an option on iOS

So guys, you recommend I'll get the iPhone 11, yep? My last one was the 7, currently using a Chinese budget flagship from the end of 2017 (Xiaomi Mi Mix 2). I feel like the new iPhone would be a substantial upgrade for me.

If you're upgrading from a 7, the 11 is going to be an amazing upgrade.
Way better stills, better video, edge to edge screen, faceID, incredible battery life.

Hey, the new iOS 13 high key mono portrait lightning effect is locked to Xr and newer (it's not even available on iPad Pro 2018), did you really expect you didn't have to buy a new iPhone for night mode?

40 bucks for the official iPhone 11 plain clear case. Well, fuck me senseless, Apple is still ridiculous when it comes to pricing accessories.

I would do that, but I don't want some random-ass cat, I want my cat. Also sometimes the algorithm doesn't detect that there's a cat in the photo I want, yadda-yadda. It's easier for me to just tag pets like they're any other member of my family. Which they are.

How many pictures of stranger's cats do you keep on your phone, exactly? ;)

While Apple's cases are ridiculously overpriced (you're literally paying for the Apple logo on these - that's why third party cases have those holes around the Apple Logo - because they'd cover the Apple Logo but at the same time can't print it on the back of their case) third party casemakers compensate that with a fantastically vibrant selection of cases.
No other family of devices will give you a greater ability to customize the look of your phone with cases and accessories.

Again, the situation that there's two tiers of phones released in any given year is rather new. So there's not that much precedence of how they'd handle "last year's premium model" vs "this year's base model"

Up until the release of the iPhone XR, there was no "base model" that was getting features which "last year's premium model" wasn't getting. Because the iPhone X was Apple's first "premium model"

Up until the iPhone X, the iPhone was kind of a one-tier family of devices. With a clear line of succession, that were all released at a similar price
4 -> 4S -> 5 -> 5S -> 6 -> 6S -> 7

I think we have seen this with the iPhone 7 and 8/X for the first time, where they artificially locked portrait lightning to the 8/X. As uncovered by Troughton-Smith, it was just a portion of meta data in the photo – you could effectively modify that of a portrait shot taken on a 7 and enable portrait lightning on it. Actually I should probably look into this for the kicks once iOS 13 is released and I update my moms Xr. I'm convinced it's the exact same situation.

(Yes, yes, it's just portrait lightning but just look at the fake aperture setting exclusive to the Xs or now night sight – which is a longer shutter speed with some AI stuff. Surely nothing that would make a one-year old flagship phone that also has a Neural Engine burst out in flames)

well, not really.
Back then, last year's $699 phone didn't get a feature that this year's $699 and $999 phones did get. That's shitty, but we've gotten used to that.

I'm specificall talking about the "this year's $699 phone is getting a feature that last year's $999 phone isn't even getting"
Which is kinda new, because this is only the second time around to have the concept of "last year's $999 phone".

So whatever feature the XR got that the X didn't get would kinda be precedence for this.
So, SmartHDR, i guess - which is imho somewhat(!) more believable to be a hardware (A12 was up to 50% faster than the A11) related restriction, than night mode.

Hmmmm - iOS is supposed to make shortcuts much more powerful, right?

Like making joining a certain WiFi network trigger stuff.

BTW - the iOS 13 Keyboard seems to be a hell lot smarter about typing in multiple languages.
Like - previously I barely posted from mobile because it would auto correct to German like there's no tomorrow. I had to switch to the English keyboard to force it to detect English as the input language.
Now it seems to smartly detect which language I'm using and it not just autocorrects words but also punctuation and capitalization flawlessly)
For people who post on English message boards / discords a lot, yet keep their phone's language settings to their mother tongue, that's an absolute megaton!

Also, the swype Keyboard works super well, too. Super happy. 🤩

You can really tell that Tim Cook is a numbers guy, not a product guy, he is absolutely nailing the process of getting as much bang for buck out of components used. 3 year old tech in a new, although entry level, iPad; savage.

Hey everyone quick question: the Smart Cover on my 9.7 inch iPad Pro is starting to fall apart. I should just be able to use any 9.7 inch Smart Cover to replace it even if they don't specifically mention the iPad Pro yes?

Nope, the 9.7" Pro used a different Smart Cover because the internal magnet layout is slightly different.

I still have the iPad Air 2, but it's pretty beaten up with a crack on the screen. Probably will have to get a new one in the near future. The iPad, not the screen.

So I'm selling my X and trying an 11 for a year. How I polite would it be to buy an XR from Apple tomorrow with the knowledge I'll return it next Friday for an 11? Not sure I have anything in the cupboard I can use

Shame I have to unpair my watch as I could possibly manage with that

Just for clarification, all of next years models will have OLED and 5G compatibility.

Is it me or is iOS' keyboard annoying. I find myself constantly making errors typing.

did you just get on iOS? I just wondered if maybe it needs to learn where you hit the keyboard? I'd love to learn how the keyboards work in the background to make the experience better, like does predictive txt get any better over time and is there any ways I can interact with it to make it work better for me? I don't have to many issues, but I do agree the better you get at the kb the less of a headache using these devices is. Like nobody knows shake to undo. change that to shake to show me all the hidden shit I can do on my screen lol. prob Against there design philosophy lol

i looked up iOS kb tips and quickly realized I forgot a bunch of tricks that will make my life happier but I tbh I really like the iOS kb and the iPad one.

When every other mobile chip maker out there can't touch the performance of your old chips, let alone your new ones, you can afford to rest on your laurels for budget tablets.

Just WiFi. It's easy enough to tether if need be, and I've would up never using cellular data more than once or twice a year on the cell tablets I've bought in the past.
I (parents and brother) spent 700 or so bucks on 128 gb lte ipad and i legit only use it on wifi for youtube, texting, twitter, and websurfing. Complete waste IMHO though it did help me pass bar exam thru practice exams

lol at people on Macrumors saying that the Series 4 processor is "fast enough" for them. We barely got to the point with that processor where the OS doesn't lag in normal use, applications launch relatively quickly, updates don't take forever, Siri returns results in an acceptable amount of time at best, and so on, but yes, you're right, that level of performance is fine for something you're buying that you'll be using 3 or so years.

Not to mention all the different use-cases a faster processor could open up to the future.

Will be curious after launch, if not sooner, what all is actually changed with the S5 chip.

do u guys buy data ipads or wifi ipads

I personally buy cellular iPads because to me, the dream of truly mobile computing doesn't come true unless you're untethered from WiFi. I don't use it a lot, but the times I have needed it (shitty school wifi, power outage at home) it's been great.

(Also, lets you track it down from Find My when you lose it, even if it's not on wifi. Not as important in iOS 13 with its group-based positioning system, but I still like the peace of mind)

It's unlocked. The way the website lays it out is correct: the only locked phone to buy from Apple is on the AT&T Next program. Everything else, even if activating on AT&T but using Apple's financing, is unlocked.

Ah guy on the phone told me every carrier is different but I really believe these specialists don't know anything except reading a script.
