I wish the correct take from all these incidents was to understand the absolute neglect of capitalism's care for human rights when money is involved and the huge danger of allowing a country, government or institution to be "uncriticable". The temptation of chauvinism should be avoided I would say.

Totally getting an android phone next. Oh wait google helps China censor the internet too

dang

I mean their whole business model is basically censoring the entire internet for every single user that touches it so that it helps them live the exact way they want in their virtualized world. It doesn't start and stop at China.

If there is a Hell, then it's really all any of us deserve if we wanna look at the China issue as a brand/ecosystem/OS war for our very ethically compromised mobile phones -- no matter who manufactures it.

It's all shit when we start to look at the various layers that it can even exist at all.

How nice of Apple to keep people safe in HK by removing this app. I guess for next year's feel good video segment (a la this year's Apple Watch saving lives ad) they can throw in some HK police brutality footage

Oh my god not a good week for us companies and china huh.

I keep saying it. China are now The Patriots. They have global control over censorship which is used to influence actions.

If the government doesn't step in and force countries to stop this behaviour then it's only going to get worse. I doubt consumers can apply enough pressure on these companies alone.

As the Chinese market becomes a bigger market for foreign companies it's only going to get worse. How about in 10 years? Will it be illegal for us to have this conversation? Will Reddit ban subreddits like r/hongkong ?

Apple can't afford to fuck around. Their reliance on China is very risky now. They need to reduce risk by offshoring from China.

It's not just manufacturing, Apple is a huge brand in China. Almost everyone has an iPhone and it's seen as the must have premium item, they literally can't risk a boycott as it would be devastating.

They'll declare the trade war to be over.

#MissionAccomplished

I think Trump will double down with some fierce rhetoric and tariffs and then China will respond with tariffs also and then the alt right will become increasingly violent towards anyone who is Asian regardless of whether or not they are Chinese. The alt right will just look down on Asian people more than ever before.

Remember this when any corporation tries to pretend it cares about racial justice, LGBTQ rights, gender equality, etc. We are watching an organ-harvesting dystopian nightmare consume the region's last shred of democracy and these companies are falling all over themselves to help.

They will literally throw you to the wolves if it'll grow their revenue half a percent.

Capitalism is a disease.

People are finally realizing capitalism is fucked. There's no ethical consumption. It's pretty much impossible to avoid products that aren't in some way related to human rights violations.

Yup, I mean they effectively use slaves in their chinese factories so this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.
That's on Foxconn and not Apple. In fact, it was Apple's audit that discovered what working conditions at Foxconn are.
And truth be told, if you wanted to avoid products made by Foxconn, then you would have to stop buying mayority of consumer electronics, including consoles, TVs, other smartphones, etc.

China is very powerful. I worry this will not end well for demonstrators. If they are all massacred tomorrow will we even see sanctions? China's impactnon the global economy is frightening when we compare with their fascism.

I doubt it. We've seen smaller countries get away with similar crimes. Israel is a lot less powerful than China, and yet no one bats an eye when Palestinians get slaughtered.

This is dissapointing after Apple led the charge on demolishing trash like Alex Jones. But now their true god has spoken. Bullshit.

Lol, China is not Communist and Capitalism is not conceding to it. That doesn't make any sense from the start, how would capitalist foreign companies even make money trying to operate in an actual Communist country?

China's a weird mix of Single Party Authoritarianism and Capitalism. On the surface I could see how Communism and Authoritarianism could seem similar because the State has so much control but they ain't Communist at all.
