Just got through Four out of Five. This album is an absolute treat to listen to. The production is top notch and suits the themes so well. Can't wait to get all the way through it.

I'm halfway through my first listen right now. I'd say it leans more towards The Last Shadow Puppets than Arctic Monkeys, especially when it comes to the songwriting. The sound of the album feels like a natural progression. I'm hearing a mix of everything they did post-Favorite Worst Nightmare. Digging it so far.

Just finished the title track. Album rules so far. Love it. These songs are great. Definitely more chill, but.... they're really, really good. Vibe is great, bass lines are excellent, etc. I don't get the problem. Yeah, it's not a straightforward rock record, but it's more adventurous and interesting than most things I've heard in a long time, and I'm really glad for that as I'm 33 now and I'm tired of hearing the same old shit.

Funny story, I actually studied in Sheffield the year before they blew up. They were selling CDR's at the local record store. I didn't buy one, mostly because I saw them perform live and they literally couldn't stay on beat together or anything... They were awwwwwwwful. Or just shitfaced. Oops. Hah.

Hah. I'm listening to this track now. It's also quite good. The whole album is good so far! I don't get the hate?
I dunno man, but after listening to it the first time, I revoke all my prior complaints about it. Listening to it a second time. I really appreciate everything this album has to offer, and it'll probably become one of my favorites of the year.

Yeah. It's really, really interesting. Complex, great lyrics so far (fuck, the lyrics on 4 out of 5 are so easy to relate to here in Portland) and just... fucking good.

I know few will agree, but this is the best album of the Arctic Monkeys if you ask me. It sounds so damn good.

The sticky, gooey basslines, the way the guitar weaves in and out and adds atmosphere to each track, the way it rings out in its 60's like tone and how much the piano and synths add to the music then Alex's voice and writing on top of it all. I'm so so so glad I ordered the vinyl and bought tickets to see them because, I'm so happy with how this turned out.

Gave it a listen a little bit ago. I don't hate it, and I actually love 4 out of 5. It's just different is all I can say atm. I'll give it another listen tomorrow to form a better opinion.

YES. Honestly, it reminds me of the Beatles at times. Especially the bass. The basslines are the best I've heard in years. Also, SCIENCE FICTION IS AMAZING. HOLY FUCKING SHIT THIS SONG.

"I put a taqueria on the roof
It was well reviewed
Four stars out of five"

I swear to god only Alex could make those lyrics work flawlessly in a song lmao. I love this album.

I was going to point that out earlier but I didn't want to deal with the potential of someone coming in and getting bent out of shape over it. But yeah Science Fiction is one of the songs that had immediately jumped out at me on first listen.
Four Out of Five
Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino
One Point Perspective
Science Fiction
Bataphone
Probably the strongest songs on the album IMO, but I genuinely love every song on here. Ultracheese I'd say is a little weaker, but I think it's just because I don't like the instrumentation as much as the other songs, it's more straightforward and less moody and layered I think.

Thing is, I get it. I really, really get it. I live in Portland, OR, and it's been blowing up since... well, since people started watching Portlandia and moving here. This city is changing so quickly, and in a lot of ways that aren't for the better. So when there's a song about gentrification, with a chorus talking about a taqueria on a roof and how "hip and cool" it is? FUCK YES.
Ultracheese I'd say is a little weaker, but I think it's just because I don't like the instrumentation as much as the other songs, it's more straightforward and less moody and layered I think.
Closing tracks can be either amazing or kinda meh in a concept album like this, but that's okay. Gotta close it out somehow.

You know that feeling you get in your chest when someone you really care about says something heartfelt to you? That thing you've always wanted to hear. Has a piece of music ever made you feel that way? Asking for a friend.

sometimes hearing "fuck that , you'll be alright" on the Death Grips song "Whatever I Want" does that to me, especially with the quiet droning calm that happens afterwards.

The Frozen Tundra Simians made this album called Melancholy Footing Resort and Gambling services. I gotta say it gets me feeling some kinda way

This album would make for a hell of a short film if they went that direction. I'll settle for just some music videos though. I just love the vibe of this.

Yeah, so this is fantastic. Amazing mood, very lounge-like atmosphere. Reminds me of This is Hardcore by Pulp a little bit, though not as dark.

Love that they went this direction rather than chase after the AM fanbase

Lol I actually found out about them like really late last year thanks to Pandora and have really been digging them alot. So I was like, there's no way in hell he's thinking this...

Same

Also my cat was playing with a Popeyes hot sauce packet and then actually punctured it... lmao

I'll give it a listen tomorrow, I've been meaning to check out a Gizzard record. Thanks for the rec!

Both of you do it, you won't regret it. Phenomenal band. Murder of the universe is fantastic, I personally prefer Polygondwanaland. But listen to both... Or all their songs... Lol

About to go-to bed with traquility base playing on my Google home, but just going to ask, I'll see the answer when I wake up.

Will do. Honestly, I've had a problem with music for the past few years. I used to work at a music venue, and was a music director of a college radio station, and worked for a music promotion company.... and I genuinely lost passion for music. I need to get it back, somehow. This album is helping.

Science Fiction said:
Religious iconography giving you the creeps?
I feel rougher than a disco lizard tongue along your cheek
The rise of the machines
I must admit you gave me something momentarily
In which I could believe
But the hand of harsh reality's un-gloved
And it's on its way back in to scoop you up
But not on my watch

I want to stay with you my love
The way some science fiction does

Reflections in the silver screen of strange societies
Swamp monster with a hard on for connectivity
The ascension of the C.R.E.A.M
Mass panic on a not too distant future colony
Quantitative easing
I want to make a simple point about peace and love
But in a sexy way where it's not obvious

Highlight dangers and send out hidden messages
The way some science fiction does
The way some science fiction does

I only ended up getting into them this year after listening to them for a while and goddamn, immediately fell in love.

Murder of the Universe and Flying Microtonal Banana for me, was lucky enough to find the colored versions of both records at the same shop. Never have I bought records so quick.

If you guys can agree on your favorite line from a song (that will fit the title) ill get it changed. Right now im thinking "What do you mean you've never seen Blade Runner?"
Though admitedly I dont know if itll fit

I'm kinda drunk so I think it'd be funny to have it be the title of the new John Mayer single which is excellent btw hahahah it's called "New Light"

After a first listen, it's alright. Glad they moved on from the AM sound, especially lyrically. I laughed when I heard those opening lines, nice to see a bit of self awareness from a band that can feel like they're a bit up their own arse. Four out of Five and Star Treatment are the immediate stand outs.

It's a bit samey though, all the songs sort of blend together in my head into one mid-tempo, crooning, sentimental goop. You would think with titles like "Batphone", "The Ultracheese" and "The World's First Ever Monster Truck Front Flip" the album would have a bit more energy.

Seems like it could be a grower for me like Humbug was, hopefully!
