I'm gonna give it 1 or 2 more spins but I really ain't fucking with this thing rn lmao.

Like, I've always liked Turner's lyrics but this thing is sooooo dependent on you hanging on every single word he says and being into his bored sing-speaking.

I can't imagine how weird a show for this tour run will be with this material next to their old stuff.

What? His singing on this album is pretty damn expressive and more expansive than a lot of earlier stuff. If anything he sing speaks a lot more on prior albums. But yeah this album takes a few spins to really get into. A good pair of headphones also really help. The album has a lot of texture and layering in the instrumental and even Alex's voice that can get lost pretty easily.

Easily the worst thing they've put out and honestly this might as well be a solo Alex album because the rest of the band might as well not even be on it. I do like the instrumentation on a few tracks but honestly Alex's voice doesn't work with most of them and the whole album is pretty boring overall. I honestly couldn't imagine seeing any of these songs live it would be so incredibly boring.

Just finished my first listen, the sound has changed too much for my liking, most likely won't give it a second listen.

They've always been a bit too fond of reverb (see the single version of R U Mine compared to the album version) but it's been a bit more subtle than this (Secret Door aside). This album is absolutely soaked in it, to the point where unless you're listening on really decent speakers/headphones most of the instrumentation is lost in the wash. I get they were going for a Phil Spectorish retro effect but it's just obnoxious.

Cloggy is the word I'd use to describe it.

Well I have done a hard 180 on this album since release. Was initially super down on it, but now after really absorbing the lyrics, it may be one of the best. Alex's lyrics on here are so fuckin' amazing. He has really matured; even since AM. Four Out Of Five and Golden Trunks are CONSTANTLY stuck in my head!

This is definitely not a bad album, it is actually pretty great if you are okay to wander to the more mature, darker side of Arctic Monkeys.

The first listen, I was already into the album. I was like, hmmm, "I thought I would be disappointed by this album, but it is definitely different, yet solid". Then I got back into the car to take Hwy 20 into the woods for the weekend, and before even started on the highway, I felt a compulsion that me put this album on again! And then again later that night!

Definitely not what I'm looking for out of the Arctic monkeys. I appreciate a band wanting to change but they can keep this. I'll always have their other albums.

I'm not really a fan of the Arctic Monkeys, but I'm really digging this album.

It feels refreshing.

A month after the release and I'm still listening to this album non-stop. I love it.

Saw them at the Royal Albert Hall last week and it was outstanding. One of my favourite gigs I've ever been to. The new songs all got good reactions from the crowd too.

My first reaction when it came out was this it all blended together in some Lodger era Bowie knockoff lounge act, but I knew that If I stepped away from it for a bit and came back to it knowing what to expect, I may like it more. I listened to it again this morning and while I still don't love it, I like It more than I originally did. I was concerned about their trajectory post Humbug, which is their best work to date. Suck it and See was mostly forgettable and felt like a companion piece to the Submarine soundtrack and I couldn't take their Rockabilly look seriously in the AM era. This album is certainly better than anything they have released in almost a decade, but it doesn't reach the highs of those first 3 releases.

Extremely jealous of that. Tried to get tickets but couldn't manage to.

From the Ritz to the Rubble sounded great when they played it, the hype from the crowd (in the video) was mad

From the Ritz was brilliant! The crowd exploded when that started. It was just an amazing atmosphere, you could tell it was full of pretty hardcore fans.

I hope they add a couple more rarities from the first few albums now and then on this tour. But it was probably just a one off thing for that show.

I'm with you there, still hasn't got old.

What's your favourite track?

My favorite is probably Batphone but I really like every song in the album. I usually listen to the full album and when I want to listen to a individual song I try to check a live version on YT. 4 out of 5 is soooo good live.

PS: Sorry for the late reply. Your post got lost under all the E3 craziness.

Sorry for the bump but I went to see them in Manchester on Friday and I left pretty disappointed. First off the sound system was absolute shite. I saw Arcade Fire at the arena a couple of months ago and they sounded great (although they did have the stage in the middle of the floor, so the speaker system was different). Don't know if anyone else who went thought the same. For the first 45 minutes they were rocking with the odd slower song but then they did about 5 slow songs all in a row and for me it just completely killed the flow. I did get to hear 505 live which was sweet but otherwise it was such a let down. Especially as me and my gf paid £250 for tickets, travel and accommodation.

I'd actually grown to like some of the new stuff but they just didn't mesh with the rest of the set. Would have much much preferred to hear the new stuff with the older slower song in a more intimate setting.

That's a shame to hear. WereW heading to see them in about 2 weeks (weirdly enough I actually just remembered that today) but this has me a little worried. I saw them a few years back and they were great but apart from Four Stars Out of Five I really don't dig the new album so I already expected that there would be parts I won't like this time and as well it's at a venue I don't like much either.

Exactly as I imagined it would.

I'm not a huge Arctic Monkeys fan, I liked the first album and Humbug and the odd song here and there and then quite liked the new album. But for their main fan base, and how their previous shows were... I really couldn't imagine the new album fitting well within their set for an arena tour. Their older materiel, with a familiar crowd, is fit for festivals and arenas but the newer stuff really feels like it demands a more intimate setting.

I was at that Arcade Fire show too, and even they have slower songs but it feels tonally right within their sets. It still sounds like Arcade Fire and most of the slower songs are generally their classic stuff which people love and know. I guess the new AM album really does have a lounge aesthetic.

Still I respect Alex for making the album he wanted to especially coming off the back of AM, which I generally despised but it had such a good reception and a lot of people loved that album and felt it was their best. To do a total 180 was brave.

Can't help but feel perhaps this should have been a Turner solo album with a tour of smaller venues.

Just back from the Dublin gig (the second one) and honestly I thought they were great. It probably helped that because of stuff said here and my not liking the new album my expectations were lowered a bit but I really enjoyed it and thought they sounded great. The set list worked well for me too (again even considering the fact that I don't really like the new album bar Four Out of Five and after today Star Treatment which they opened with), although I'm not sure if they changed it up from some of the earlier gigs. Only change I would have made was swapping in Flourescent Adolescent. We had a few drunk assholes near us that were just a bit irritating for a while but then went on to smoke until I called a steward that thankfully helped but it did put a dampener on things, especially as it worked up my asthma a bit (and still has even though it doesn't affect me much these days) and my girlfriend's lung condition.

Went to see them on the 15th at Birmingham where they were also great.

I love everything from the new album but I did feel some of them felt a little bit flat when played live. Star Treatment was an incredible opener, the transition from 505 to TBHC was fucking amazing and Pretty Visitors was one hell of an experience.

Also got to hear The View from the Afternoon and Ritz to the Rubble which are two of my favourite tracks from WPSIATWIN so was well chuffed with that.

First time I've ever seen them and I can't wait to do it again

Yeah the last 2 you mentioned have always been in my favourites since that album cane out so it was great to hear them, don't think I heard Ritz to the Rubble the other time I saw them.

Actually looking at this, the set list (or order of it, at least) in the two Dublin shows alone varied a decent bit, let alone their setlists from the whole UK and Ireland tours. http://thethinair.net/2018/09/arctic-monkeys-3arena-dublin/

On the second night they opened with Star Treatment (not Four Out of Five, which was the last they played before the encore IIRC), which they followed up with Arabella and then Brianstorm (instead of Brianstorm and leaving Arabella until the encore). They didn't play Dancing Shoes either.

(Apologies for the double-post, I should have checked.)

Seriously, this album is just absolutely incredible. Batphone and Science Fiction are mind-blowing amazing. Star Treatment, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, and Four Out of Five are also all top twenty in the band's catalogue, in my opinion.

I feel like the style change lost a lot of people and that is definitely a shame.

I don't even particularly care for their other albums, but Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino is probably in my top 5 of all time. Its fucking great start to finish.

Happy to necro bump this thread, the album deserves a reappraisal from fans who didn't get into it at the time of release.

Sorry, still don't like it - Arctic Monkeys were one of my favourite bands for the first two albums, but they have been moving in a direction that just does not interest me at all & this album in particular turned me right off them. Last time I saw them live, I was just bored.
