Humbug:Who are you?
What? His singing on this album is pretty damn expressive and more expansive than a lot of earlier stuff. If anything he sing speaks a lot more on prior albums. But yeah this album takes a few spins to really get into. A good pair of headphones also really help. The album has a lot of texture and layering in the instrumental and even Alex's voice that can get lost pretty easily.I'm gonna give it 1 or 2 more spins but I really ain't fucking with this thing rn lmao.
Like, I've always liked Turner's lyrics but this thing is sooooo dependent on you hanging on every single word he says and being into his bored sing-speaking.
I can't imagine how weird a show for this tour run will be with this material next to their old stuff.
Humbug was my favorite followed by FWN before this album.
How dare you ?
Serious note. I've only listen the album once so its early to say if i like it or not. Humbug is the Best Monkeys album !
I hope. Really want to like it, 5 years without an album is a lot of time. But anyways, i'm glad the band does whatever they want, In my humble opinion Alex it is a very talent dude.Humbug was my favorite followed by FWN before this album.
TBH+C is better though, it just needs time to be fully appreciated.
Absolutely! To write the way he does lyrically and to make an album like this you have to be insanely talented.I hope. Really want to like it, 5 years without an album is a lot of time. But anyways, i'm glad the band does whatever they want, In my humble opinion Alex it is a very talent dude.
Why?
Cant bring myself to listen to this , Turners turned into a parody.
Makes good music and enjoys performing it but that somehow makes him a parodyHe just makes good music, dude gets so much undeserved hate everywhere lol
I'm with you there, still hasn't got old.A month after the release and I'm still listening to this album non-stop. I love it.
Extremely jealous of that. Tried to get tickets but couldn't manage to.Saw them at the Royal Albert Hall last week and it was outstanding. One of my favourite gigs I've ever been to. The new songs all got good reactions from the crowd too.

From the Ritz to the Rubble sounded great when they played it, the hype from the crowd (in the video) was mad

What's your favourite track?
That's a shame to hear. WereW heading to see them in about 2 weeks (weirdly enough I actually just remembered that today) but this has me a little worried. I saw them a few years back and they were great but apart from Four Stars Out of Five I really don't dig the new album so I already expected that there would be parts I won't like this time and as well it's at a venue I don't like much either.Sorry for the bump but I went to see them in Manchester on Friday and I left pretty disappointed. First off the sound system was absolute shite. I saw Arcade Fire at the arena a couple of months ago and they sounded great (although they did have the stage in the middle of the floor, so the speaker system was different). Don't know if anyone else who went thought the same. For the first 45 minutes they were rocking with the odd slower song but then they did about 5 slow songs all in a row and for me it just completely killed the flow. I did get to hear 505 live which was sweet but otherwise it was such a let down. Especially as me and my gf paid £250 for tickets, travel and accommodation.
I'd actually grown to like some of the new stuff but they just didn't mesh with the rest of the set. Would have much much preferred to hear the new stuff with the older slower song in a more intimate setting.

Went to see them on the 15th at Birmingham where they were also great.Just back from the Dublin gig (the second one) and honestly I thought they were great. It probably helped that because of stuff said here and my not liking the new album my expectations were lowered a bit but I really enjoyed it and thought they sounded great. The set list worked well for me too (again even considering the fact that I don't really like the new album bar Four Out of Five and after today Star Treatment which they opened with), although I'm not sure if they changed it up from some of the earlier gigs. Only change I would have made was swapping in Flourescent Adolescent. We had a few drunk assholes near us that were just a bit irritating for a while but then went on to smoke until I called a steward that thankfully helped but it did put a dampener on things, especially as it worked up my asthma a bit (and still has even though it doesn't affect me much these days) and my girlfriend's lung condition.
Seriously, this album is just absolutely incredible. Batphone and Science Fiction are mind-blowing amazing. Star Treatment, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, and Four Out of Five are also all top twenty in the band's catalogue, in my opinion.
I feel like the style change lost a lot of people and that is definitely a shame.
Sorry, still don't like it - Arctic Monkeys were one of my favourite bands for the first two albums, but they have been moving in a direction that just does not interest me at all & this album in particular turned me right off them. Last time I saw them live, I was just bored.I don't even particularly care for their other albums, but Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino is probably in my top 5 of all time. Its fucking great start to finish.
Happy to necro bump this thread, the album deserves a reappraisal from fans who didn't get into it at the time of release.
