Title is pretty self explanatory. I'm in dire need of motivation and ideas lol. My current job sucks and I'm doing my best to move. I'm certainly not rich but I have an emergency fund that could keep me afloat for several months.

Hang in there. A lot of people seem to be switching jobs currently. I'm actually attending a coding boot camp currently trying to get into full stack development.

Do you want to stay in your industry or move out?

Am I rich as in, do I make a lot of money? No.
Am I rich because I'm happy and I can't wish for anything else?
Also no.

How much is rich. I'm in the top 10 percentile in Canada. No kids, feel wealthy enough.

I got a government job in science.

My dream job was newspaper cartoonist, which disintegrated around me as I grew up. I'm just trying to find a design job now and doing comics on the side.

I didn't know it was my dream job until I started doing it professionally, Software Engineering. I work for a great company and I have my own side consulting gig in the field. I fucking love it and everything related to it. My workplace is fantastic as well and we get crazy perks.

Now, I am not rich at all, but between my job and my business I am in the very low three digits annually, and my fiancée also works in IT and earns a decent amount so our combined salary is comfy enough to have some excesses and comodities every once in a while. A big bulk of our money goes to traveling and individual hobbies.

Edit: age is important. I am 29.

I'm in the 98th~ percentile in Canada for my age group, but I don't consider myself rich, I still have to budget pretty well.

Dream job? Kind of.

This first part is bullshit though. I grew up in a family that was the 0.1% of our country, and still no one called themselves rich because we knew people that were "proper" rich. If you are doing better than 98% of your peers, just accept you are rich.

I'm in banking. I really wouldn't mind moving out of that industry. I have applied to several companies out of the finance world with no success so far. Sucks!

Am I rich as in, do I make a lot of money? No.
Am I rich because I'm happy and I can't wish for anything else?
Also no.
That was dark. Hang in there though. Luck and preparation as they say.

Sounds like you are rich
I'm really not. I realise that a lot of purple don't have an emergency fund but that doesn't make me rich.

Your own definition of rich applies. Do you feel rich?

Well, there's another angle to that, where your peers will probably be at, near, or even above your income level in a lot of cases. I know a lot of peers who do make more than I do. I guess I could say that I don't feel rich for the kind living standard that I want, I guess?

Dream job? No but my side gigs have been pretty amazing.

I'm not RICH but my wife and I are on the young side, make far above the average income for a household in the US, and own a house and a car each.

Upper Middle Class I'd say.

You just said 98% percentile though. It would be literally living in a bubble if you are surrounded by people that make as much or more than you. Living in the bubble of the elite of the elite.

Idk what counts as rich. I'm like top 2% for America but I don't feel rich. The difference between 2% and 1% can be crazy. I don't really think people are rich until they're almost millionaires or something.

Even when I was little and kinda poor I didn't think a few hundred thousand dollars was rich.

Dont have a dream job because I'd prefer not to ever work and just invest.

There's a HUGE gap between the 98th percentile for my age group and the 99th and 100th. It's like ultra exponential.

I enjoyed this job for a while now. But I'm thinking it's starting time to move on. Currently working on getting my certainly for A+ and Network+ and then using that and this current field tech job to spring board into something nice or at least lateral with same pay but learning new skills.

Rich: Not rich but We make enough that even with 2 kids we can pretty much do what we want with proper budgeting.

Dream Job: Not sure i have a dream job but I am in supply chain and it is a field I enjoy very much with plenty of opportunity to always improve the company.

How'd I get there: Resume and Interview skills are vital. You can be the most talented individual in the world but no one will give you a minute of their time if your resume is not up to par. Make sure your resume includes things you did that are above and beyond and not talk about the day to day tasks.
If you get past the resume part you better know how to interview well. You need to be able to talk yourself up and form a relationship with the interviewers.

After that, I always took on the jobs no one wanted. If there was a project that was impossible that is the project that matters. Also do more then is required and get your hands dirty in cross functional departments. Anyone can do the day to day of a job, companies want someone that will expand and improve.

Yeah like $250k would put you in the top 2% in the US but $400k and 10 million would both be considered top 1%. I think looking at income in this way is flawed.

I'm not rich, but well off. I chalk it all up to hard work and a little bit of luck. I'm doing exactly what I wanted to do . . . I went to school initially for 3D / VFX, but I switched over to Motion Graphics, and I'm thankful I did so when I look at the state of that industry. Been doing it since the early 2000's professionally, and I own my own small shop at this point. Don't want to get any larger, I'm in a perfectly happy and content spot.

It's nice.

my dream job is to be "professional" musician making money working on production in a studio and/or touring the world.

am i doing that? nope, but i would like to.

money isn't even a big deal, as long as i made enough to sustain a decent lifestyle i would be happy.

that being said, i am happy with my current job. still in uni. and working towards my degree in supply chain. i produce/create music as a hobby, which is fine by me. do what makes you happy - worry about money when you need it.

I'm not rich but I'm comfortable enough. I'm in my dream role doing project launch management , but as always I'm hoping to go further and move into more of a technical product management role in financial data analytics tool building

Depends on what you mean by rich.

I do okay by myself. If you take my wife's job into account, we do more than okay, but we do still have some debts to pay, and we have a ways to go before we will be in a position to retire comfortably (in like 25 years).

Job wise, it's not my dream job, but I can't complain. It's fairly low stress, and I have a pretty liberal work from home deal.

Sounds like you are rich

No. The "emergency fund" is bare minimum in personal finance. I understand that a lot of people don't have this, especially here in the US, and that is a problem, but it's not an indicator of being rich by any sensible definition.

My wife and I are very comfortable. Own 2 places and a buying our third place next year. Purchased a new vehicle this year and I'll probably buy another vehicle in a few years. We are having our first kid in a few months so it's nice knowing we have flexibility with money. I am not working my dream job.

Definitely don't have a dream job. I wanted to work in video production and writing, but those formal jobs hardly exist where I live. My wife and I want to start a video production company, since nobody around here does it, and market ourselves to do wedding videography and advertisements. It's a big market, but there's money there if you know how to advertise yourself.

Right now I work in advertising and pay-per-click campaign management. It's not fun, but it pays the bills. I hope to move on in the next few years to something that focuses more on the video side of that process, or just drop it and put serious time into our little business idea.

Yeah emergency funds aren't rich it just means you don't life pay check to pay check. That is a huge leg up over others tho.

Also I still like the industry and the stuff I do but good these clients of ours are fucking picky.

If you are making $250, you are making 80 times the median global income. That is rich in my books.

1. No, but I live comfortably.

2. Yes.

3. Luck, luck, and luck. Worked just hard enough in school to get the degree and connections I needed, got a foot in the door somewhere, and just worked until I got what I wanted. And now I work hard.

Thread is a lot to take in.
Why lol

I feel rich, does that count?
it absolutely does

I am rich. Not mega-rich but I got around a million in liquid in various places and assets valued more. I play poker online and at casinos. 99% of it is cash games.
goddamn, you must be pretty good at poker then lol. Hope you take it in moderation and know when to stop though. But why am I trying to advise a millionaire lmao, you've made it this far so you know what you're doing

I don't even know what my dream job is.
What di you enjoy doing? Life is short, try figuring it out asap man

Not rich but have my dream job.

Hardest part was figuring out what the fuck that was.
great to hear

nah it's your own definition that counts. Do you feel rich?

thanks for sharing. I find myself sending hours on LinkedIn and Glassdoor looking for opportunities, skills recruiters are looking for and that people working in companies I'm interested in have.

I don't feel rich. I live in Alberta so my income, despite being high, is still considered middle class. I definitely make more than my peers in other Provinces. I also hate what I do.

Currently doing career counseling so I can actually enjoy what I do.

Agreed. Rainy day funds are a must for anyone that isn't living pay cheque to pay cheque (which, to be fair, is a lot of people).

Not even paycheck to paycheck. I have met people whose house is 5 pieces of zinc, where they live with their whole family. Having a solid house to call your own, access to food and a fund to keep you going for a few months is being rich when compared to how most people live in the world.

I find that while we all want to be richI worked to get to a point where I can be happy and comfortable "without reasonable worry." This means

I have 6+ months of emergency funds/rent saved up in case I were for some reason to lose my job tomorrow
My kids/pets are in school/comfortable and have food, shelter, and clothing
My retirement accounts are setup and being funded
The level of security at home/office is more than reasonable.

So no, I am no rich, I do have to make sure I follow my monthly budget, but given all the above I cannot complain. All I can keep doing is learning new skills, reading new books, educating myself on matters that interest me, and strive forward.

I feel comfortable, and I make 50K and live in an apartment. I'd qualify having multiple places as being rich.

I feel like I make pretty good money but I also feel like I'll never be able to own a house, and I see people saying they are on houses 2 and 3 and my mind just boggles.
