Ars Technica: "Sony says semiconductor shortage makes increased PS5 production difficult"

A bit disappointed, but I was rushing trying to get new parts for the gaming PC instead of a PS5. I feel vindicated, but this still sucks. I guess I'm gonna have to push getting a console much further.

That it was part of the OP is irrelevant. The current situation with semiconductors has nothing to do with the increase in digital sales. Which is what you’re claiming. It’s literally your first sentence
I never said anything about the semi conductors. I specifically talked about the digital sales growth that is talked about on the OP. Again, I fail to understand what you are talking about.

This is already shaping up to be the worst generation ever. Scalpers, shortages, high prices, $70 games, and miners (on the PC side).
This seems extremely hyperbolic, at least with regards to the PS5.

Scalpers - something that happens every generation with desired consoles. Research has also shown that it's a small minority of consoles sold.

Shortages - PS5 has so far produced around the same amount of consoles as they did with PS4, if not more. It's just so popular that they are getting sold out instantly.

High prices - you can get a PS5 DE for £350 and the disc version is £450. That means you can get a PS5, which is a much stronger console than PS4, for the same price as the PS4 released at.

I mean you said " The current situation has only accelerated the transition to Digital. " And then quoted the part about digital sales. If you weren't trying to make a link to the topic at hand with your thoughts on digital...I'm not sure what point you were making. The "situation" is a semi-conductor shortage. I can see why they would be a little confused by your post. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something too idk.

Apple already bought out the whole 5nm line for themselves since last year for their A14 and M1 chips. Some high-end android phones could maybe get a chance for 5nm chips this year but flagships of android makers sell vastly less to make a difference for the 5nm line (and free up 7nm space).

If nothing else, 7nm will be even more clogged since now all the mid-range phones, PS5, XSS/X, AMD CPUs & GPUs and basically all the other competition that wants to get in on a mature 7nm fabrication for their chips wants to get in there now. The reason why Nvidia had to go with 8nm Samsung Fab is because they waited too long and gambled for a good deal with TMSC, and then they playing themselves since the whole 7nm fab lines were oversold at that point already.

Like many have said before even car manufacturers are affected by this, that's how bad the situation is.

Right now, TSMC also has to fight with water shortages for 2 of its fab locations. The Huawei ban last (?) year also amplified the rush for competition to get in on TSMC and take the freed up lines from Huawei.

Switch is still on 16nm, it's outdated at this point in time. Now if rumors about the new Switch Pro with a new chip are true, the only launch of a new Switch people can expect this year is going to be a paper launch.
Rumors are that the Switch Pro would be made by Samsung, not TMSC. That would have fewer problems. It's a revision, not a new gen, it doesn't need cutting edge chips like $ 1000 phones.

The current situation as in the current situation with the pandemic that is forcing people to stay home and buy digital games. I was not talking about at all about the semi-conductor shortage.

Thank god Sony came out and said this. Otherwise I might have thought they just didn't make them because they didn't feel like it.

/s, obviously

See you for PS5 pro then I guess. What’s the point of paying top dollar for a system that isn’t conventionally available for its first 14 months?

While scalping occurs every generation, I don’t believe it’s ever been as bad as this gen.

Around 10% of consoles sold going to scalpers is awfully high.

Higher prices is in reference to $70 games, which Sony and others are pushing.

The scalping situation is only as bad as it is because stores won't carry them in the middle of a pandemic. Even if you picked one up at the store, you still had to order it online first. I can easily go to any store right now and buy a switch because we're not all pigeon holed into a single method of purchasing a product even though those are selling like crazy too.

Will part of the issue regarding scalpers is that all stock allocation is online because of the pandemic so that has caused extra issues and while upto 10% is a lot, it's nowhere near the amount that people act like online where people often act as if it's the majority of consoles.

As for prices, you had that as a separate reason to game prices so it came across as a different issue you had.

In Canada it seems it's getting better, people are finding boxes in some EB Games and online sales are lasting minutes instead of seconds. I could have added one to my cart yesterday morning on costco.ca.
