My dude.....you definetely need to get a jump on that South Korea train. Their comedies are hilarious (its almost as if they stuck in a 2005 time space/not every movie but a few). For an Asian nation, their content is quite westernized. Good action flicks too.
Great dramas too. Bro, get on that. Their K-Dramas are amazing....

Day of Resurrection / Virus - was one of the first apocalypse movies I ever watched as a child, and it totally fascinated me. Looking back on it, the movie has aged as most good 80s movies have, cheesy fun. It was a Japanese production but also starred a few name international actors.
Since a lot of mine have already been mentioned I'll throw out one of my favorites that I haven't seen mentioned yet called Girlfriend, Boyfriend (GF*BF).
I saw Funeral Parade of Roses last year and really liked it. It's a very late 60s arthouse film about a set of mostly gay & trans characters in Tokyo.
Stylistically it has some sequences that were pretty obviously influential on Kubrick with A Clockwork Orange.

One season of a korean game show i really like features an OST from a lot of "casino heist" movies. Since i know and like all other movies featured on this soundtrack (Ocean's Eleven, Now You See Me, Pacific Rim, Dexter) i figured "The Thieves" must be a good film too:
And it is. Cool heist movie. Interactions between two groups of Korean and Chinese thieves was especially great and the way how they have to talk either through bilingual crewmembers or find third common language (English or Japanese) was neat. Action also got very good by the end, think the best Hong Kong action good.
And while i was on "asian heist movie" mood i checked out this movie, "Bad Genius":
Despite very different setting (cheating on school/university exams) it is still a heist movie. You have a crew, grand plan, things going wrong, improvisations and it's all filmed with the same tension and flair as the best scenes from caper movie.

So Iast week, I saw Koreeda's "Our Little Sister" and "Like Father, Like Son" from our library's DVD collection, and ended up loving both. One thing that really impressed me about both these films is the cinematography, and how the look of 35mm film was integral to the feel of the story. I really want to watch them again in HD, but it's really stupid how they release these new movies on DVD for North America with no bluray release! It's a shame, considering how beautiful these films are.
Just venting here a little sorry.

Our Little Sister is probably my fav of his. Like Father Like Son is great too. I recommend Still Walking too.
In case you have a region-free BR player (which I find totally worth it for Asian cinema), You can get them for Blu-ray on region B.
Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but The Villainess is on Hulu to watch.
Definitely has some of the best action I've seen recently in film and it comes right out of the gate firing.

Some people have already mentioned it, but I want to agree and say "In the Mood for Love" is absolutely phenomenal. It's so moody and human. I cannot recommend it enough.

Master - I enjoyed it
Psychokinesis - Cant believe how awful the police were in this, trying to kill people and obeying contractors lol
Train to Busan - Absolutely loved it.
The Villainess - Action was good, but thought the story was weak.

The Handmaiden is one of my favorite movies ever. It is BEAUTIFUL and I love how the women have a lot of agency even in the worst situation they could be. I love the soundtrack too.
Don't believe the trailers though. The main one sold it like it is a movie about fetishes and it's not about this at all. It even has a lot of very good comedic moments and plenty of cute ones.

I just watched Memories of murder and it was fucking fantastic, I loved everything about it, it has now become one of my favourite movies.
I also watched a touch of sin last week, it was a beautiful film, I don't really watch a lot of Chinese cinema so this has become my favourite Chinese film.

That's cool. And a reminder that Dragon Inn (1967) is getting a Criterion release next week. As with A Touch of Zen, the cover art is by Greg Ruth. Quite a few more Chinese and Korean movies deserve a Criterion treatment, it's a shame they lost the rights to some of the more important HK movies.

Agreed but it is also a sign that Asian cinema is growing and Criterion simply cannot pay market rate for the licenses.
Do folks really feel there are enough similarities in Korean, Chinese, and Japanese movies to lump them all into an "Asian films" category?
It's probably that foreign movies are already niche enough for the west, and consolidating the output to a common banner makes it more digestible than splitting hairs about regional differences (which would require some prior experience to begin with).

If this was a film forum maybe they'd warrant separate threads but basically as a way to encourage more than the bare minimum of post frequency, grouping them is OK. For a western audience as well there probably is a lot of overlap between the audiences.
Don't forget South Asian films too!
I saw two for the London Indian Film Festival recently, Village Rockstars and Venus. Latter was a fun transgender comedy and former was an amazing neorealist female empowerment tale.
The Third Murder is finally available to rent, so I will be on that this weekend.
I also got the BFI player - three months free via Amazon prime day. So I can finally watch some Ozu films, and the Kurosawa ones i'm missing like Red Beard, I live in Fear, Ikiru etc.

Takeshi Kitano is such a brilliant actor. Loved Hana-bi. I am also looking for Outrage Coda.

Big Yu Aoi fan, pretty much watch anything starring her. Hopefully this one will be good. My vacation starts soon so maybe I'll have chanche to watch some of my backlog, too many asian films to watch... Or I try to continue my Tora-san marathon.

I have been meaning to watch this for ages. Taiyō Matsumoto's original manga is one of my favorite works in the medium but for some reason I haven't mustered energy to watch it.
Oh shit, didn't realize this thread was resurrected here. Watched two Asian films recently: The Handmaiden and The Wailing.
The Handmaiden was incredible. Honestly, I loved pretty much everything about it. Intriguing, engaging and definitely unpredictable story, fantastic performances, incredible OST and it looked great.
The Wailing was very good too, although maybe not as scary or tense as I was hoping. Did make me think that more movies need to feature heavy rain and rougher weather prominently, though. Goddamn does it do wonders to the atmosphere, and atmosphere was definitely this movie's biggest strength. Also got a real hankering to rewatch Memories of Murder after finishing The Wailing, so now I'm looking for a DVD or Bluray copy of it. There's like one DVD with English subtitles of it on Amazon UK, but it's 35 pounds. Definitely too much.
Thanks to this thread I also noticed that Amazon UK finally got Cure with English subtitles a while back (https://www.amazon.co.uk/CURE-Maste..._title_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1531900291&sr=8-1). Bought it last year from there without realizing the disc I got only had Spanish subtitles lol. Definitely looking forward to checking it out in a few weeks.
e: also speaking of weather, I'm probably gonna borrow my dad's Kurosawa collection again. It's got six movies of his, thinking of marathoning them some weekend.

Ahh! if you find a UK bluray copy of memories of a murder please let me know! It's one of my all-time favourite films, along with Sonatine which also hasn't had a UK BD release -.-
