The sheer spread of those cities makes me think the open world would be most sensibly broken down into 3-4 region maps (Scandinavia, Britain, France, Rus).
I wish Rogue was the start of smaller, more focused AC games centered around the classic style of assassination gameplay and combat while this post-Origins stuff was a new IP.
I totally agree with you on this. I really liked the main story of Odyssey, but all those filler quests were just dull. This is why I was hoping for a shorter map instead of a larger one.
I finished and disliked Origins, then avoided Odyssey as I read it was basically more of the same. I know most people value gameplay over story, but I'm the opposite. I need a reason to keep playing a narrative-driven game, doesn't matter if the gameplay is great. Sure, the earlier AC's weren't amazing, but they weren't ridiculously huge maps that take ages to traverse while you grind quests to rank up either. My dream is an Uncharted-style linear Assassin's Creed one day...
I always laugh at all the players who are mad that AC didn't stay the same boring concept every game for the last twenty years.
AC Odyssey was a fantastic game and if you didn't play it because it wasn't like AC2 then you are doing yourself a disservice. I look forward to the new stuff introduced in Ragnarok whether this leak is real or not.
Sounds like the map is going to be even bigger than the one in Odyssey. Odyssey was already a chore to traverse even with fast travel. I'm also holding out hope that this weapon durability crap can be modded out even though past AC games weren't very moddable.

I wonder if an AC game ever doesn't leak on 4chan that Ubisoft would just go ahead and post it there themselves because they forget how to announce then as surprises at this point
So maybe I'm reading this wrong, but you're always going around in a 4 man group? So if you don't play coop, you presumably will deal with AI teammates? Hopefully I'm wrong on this, but that sounds awful. Hoping you can still solo everything.
- Weapon durability does now come into play, forcing players to use their weapon pool more effectively and forced to manage a smaller inventory that can be upgraded

We went from game with amazing characters and game with variety of missions to games with 3 types of missions that are repeating and characters you mostly see once and forget.
Weapons breaking is a disgusting mechanic and highlights how much Assassin's Creed lost its identity and had to become a different series because they weren't competent enough to make anything contemporary without ripping off service games and Witcher success.
I like Odyssey but god the grinding and stats stuff feels so ridiculous as someone who played every main entry from the beginning.

the problem with AC wasn't that it was the same concept. The problem was that ubi pumped them out yearly. Rockstar open world games have retained more or less the same format since 2001 and each launch is an event, and their games are praised to high heavens.
Meanwhile ubisoft put one out every year, often at the cost of the technical state of the games (AC3, Unity). Sure, they are more lax now with leaving more time for development, but if they were still putting out yearly games, then this current format would probably get older much quicker since they're much longer games too.

I played all of them to completion, including Odyssey.
Odyssey is an okay RPG (Origins was way better, IMO), but hardly an Assassins Creed. AC, for as much as you might like or not that formula, was really unique in its own genre, because of its verticality, social stealth aspects and traversal mechanics, apart from super dense city maps. Those elements are nowhere to be seen in other videogames, apart from maybe Watch Dogs?
I don't see barely anything of that in Origins, and much less on Odyssey. What I see is the same blueprint of open-world action RPG from Horizon, The Witcher, Skyrim, etc. And I've posted multiple times about how I hate the false level scaling they do (again, even more on Odyssey), which makes the game even more towards a style of game that I don't like.
Original AC didn't die because of its formula, but because they released 9 main games from 2008 to 2015.
As much problems as I have with some of Ubi's business models and ideas, it sounds like they're one of the few devs trying to emulate BOTW but put their own spin on it, alongside trying to replicate Witcher.
Odyssey and Origins aren't games I like, but this one could get me into it if they pull off the things in the synopsis. Co-op with my GF would be a big part of it, and then if there's story but also reputation and more RPG elements that have been sorely lacking in this gen (Not "fake" RPG elements like just putting numbers on shit) I could see myself diving into this game.
We'll see though. Far Cry 5 and what I played of Odyssey felt like they're really good at capturing surface element ideas but not how to expand on them without a ton of repetitive gameplay/loops. We'll see if these features and maybe a strong map can help them with these problems.
- Sailing returns is less combat intensive and more focused on exploration and travel including being able to navigate tight rivers and wetlands
- Parkour is upgraded with tree climbing and new animations
- The hidden blade is back and is far more customizable in terms of cosmetics. Can be upgraded to kill in one stab
- Stealth is upgraded by having physical stealth skills such as hiding in mud, snow, crouching in bushes, hiding in bales of hay, etc.- Players can now also hide in crowds of civilians if their outfit/ armor is appropriate otherwise it can attract attention.
- Players now have a reputation system based on quests completed for people in cities, the town officials, clothing worn, crimes committed, etc. Some quests and story missions can only be completed after reaching a certain reputation with kingdoms.
- Up to 4 player drop in drop out co-op like Ghost Recon wildlands.
- Jora led a small band of 4 during their adventures which is why other players can drop in and out for co-op.
- Weapon durability does now come into play, forcing players to use their weapon pool more effectively and forced to manage a smaller inventory that can be upgraded
- The assassins are believed to have a connection to Odin and dub their raven drone as odin sight
I'll poke around. Some of the details here match what I've heard but I hadn't heard all of them. And this seems like a realistic leak as opposed to someone's fantasy list of bullet points.
The map is massive. Like all of northern europe. My source mentioned big cities being York, London, Paris, and kiev. Every kingdom was meant to be really unique
Can I be honest here with this part? I truly hate how big Assassins Creed has gotten, especially with the last one which was a massively beautiful world with bland gameplay involved. I hope if they want to make such an open world they will make each region more better with things to do and every story element is in each region and they have unique side missions. —unpopular opinion I know.
Not liking the idea of being in a group of 4. I like the concept of being a lone assassin working in the shadows. Although recent titles haven't been all that stealthy, to be fair.
I adore origins and odyssey. They got me back into assassins creed after a long hiatous. Im glad the game seems to be following the precadent of being more of a straight up rpg that those games set for the series. Im sure i will put another 180 hours into this on series x, like i did for odyssey on xbox one x.
There was a new 4chan leak yesterday that I shared to the AC subreddit, and just found out about this sub so decided to share here as well. Obviously take with a grain of salt.
- Title of the next game is Ragnarok, codenamed Kingdom
- Will launch on Xbox One, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X
- Officially announced in february at the upcoming playstation event, release date September 29th, 2020.
- Up to 4 player drop in drop out co-op like Ghost Recon wildlands.
- Player can only play as a single character, Jora, who can be chosen to be male or female.
- Jora led a small band of 4 during their adventures which is why other players can drop in and out for co-op.
- Continues heavy RPG mechanics now including different classes and mild skill tree changes based on class. Player class can be changed by a specific character.
- Combat is upgraded with more weapon types and special abilities for every weapon grouping.- Each weapon can have runes added, be upgraded, and durability increased.
- Weapon durability does now come into play, forcing players to use their weapon pool more effectively and forced to manage a smaller inventory that can be upgraded
- Replacing adrenaline is a berserker mode which also activates special runes like fire, frost, or lightning damage.
- Conquest battles return to help capture some settlements from templars and players can approach them in a variety of ways.
- Players can also find battles between warring kingdoms occurring dynamically throughout the world.
- Multiple settlements throughout the world can be captured and controlled for trade and currency gains
- Players can organize large scale raids of forts and cities with nearby viking camps, wait for their own raids, or go in by themselves.
- The assassins are believed to have a connection to Odin and dub their raven drone as odin sight
.- Difficulty returns but focuses more on parry times, player health, and enemy reaction times rather than enemy health
- Levelling is overhauled to allow players to improve skillsets to gain experience, like in Skyrim. As a result, level locking regions and content is gone.
- Some skills are unlocked by reaching a high enough skillset level, some must be bought with skill points, and others are unlocked through game/ story progression.
- The map is massive. Like all of northern europe. My source mentioned big cities being York, London, Paris, and kiev. Every kingdom was meant to be really unique.
(potential story spoilers)
- Game begins in 845 CE at the siege of Paris with you playing as Jora's father, Rorik who's an ally of the viking leader Ragnar.
We next cut to 863 as the teenage Jora living in Novagrad?. Eventually we meet assassins and are sent to deliver a package to Ragnar in Uppsala.
Jora becomes a thane to Ragnar allowing the settlement system and we then follow him to northumbria where the templar Aella kills Ragnar.
Jora returns to Ragnars sons where the army is formed to combat the templars that control most of europe
We follow most of the invasion and war, becoming allies with Alfred, conquer kiev, help rollo in normandy, and overthrow fat charles in france.
Then a templar named Bjorn has an eden piece that's like a knife that gives him control over vikings and tries to invade england again (idk what this is, google translate may be screwing up).
Then we kill Bjorn in a temple and give his knife to his mother's who's ragnar's ex?
Also there are a ton of temples that are each protected by a mythical beast like a giant snake, a dragon, kraken, and a giant
God I miss the crowded citied and alleyways, the leaping off rooftops and jumping I to haystacks. The single detailed map with very few open areas.
AC unity was the last great assassins game imo, syndicate was good but started moving away from the classic AC formula.
Both origins and Odyssey could easily gave been a Prince of Persia or new IP and no one would care .
Odyssey just was ridiculous in size and so repetitive .
If these leaks are true its just a bigger Odyssey with rpg tweaks , they are even keeping the drone (I mean bird).
It's watchdogs , ghost recon , farcry all rolled into 1 . you would think they would have learnt from break point . I miss the assassin games where it wasn't a hardcore rpg with loot rolls.
I just want more variety in side missions. Most of this sounds great, i hope there is crossplay. FUCK weapon durability though. That shit was abysmal in botw and I will avoid this game like the damn plague if it even remotely similar
