If ever seeing normal Astartes is once in maybe tens of generations event for some planets, where they never visit most, then think how unbelievable rare it's to see Grey Knight or Custodian. Even for Astartes themselves.

Wait, this is a one-man project? This is quite impressive because everything looks great: the models, the animations, lighting. Clever framing as well.

Super impressive. Guy's bound to find professional work, if he isn't already a pro.

It sucks knowing each minute takes roughly 4-5 months to produce, though. Lord knows whether he'll even complete this (or if GW decides to slap him with a C&D).

Really hate these threads. Why? Because i always land on the lexicanum wiki and from there it's link after link after link. Wosh one hours is gone.

I remember that. My local G.W tried to jazz up the DVD release with a metal case. Glad I did not buy it.
My friend fell for it and bought the fancy case edition. We watched the movie precisely once. I always loved how they how managed to get such big names like John Hurt and Terence Stamp yet by their performance its painfully clear they have NO IDEA what they're saying half the time. That and the animation looked like a PS2 game at times.

Those 3 videos were impressive to say the least. Would love to see a representation of an astartes like Lucius of the Emperors Child fighting melee. That would be nuts.

You NEVER remember seeing Grey Knights, though. At best, the Inquisition wipes your memory, possibly leaving you a vegatable.

At worst, your planet is blown up.

Custodes are ever worse, since they only appear in situations ever Space Marines can't handle...

That would be insanely good. I don’t understand why Hollywood hasn’t jumped on this. The 40K universe is so rich with lore.
Too much hyper masculinity, too nihilistic. How many 40k fans are women? It would be hard as hell to get this on screen in any big budget incarnation faithful to the source material..

Yeah I think people would either be disappointed in the fact a major movie waters down a lot of what fans love about the universe or it goes hardcore and probably bombs because its humorless ultra violent and graphic grim dark stuff that's usually about a bunch of psychopathic super soldiers.

I'm sure the same was said of Game of Thrones at one point. A series centered on the inquisition could be whatever you wanted it to be. Or even rogue traders.

Goddamn. That was cool. REALLY wish we could get some more official long form stuff like this.

To GW's credit, they're usually really cool about this stuff. They even greenlit an official animated project from someone who had done a few fan films. They need to give this guy a team too though.

I'm going to need to some more background on those two groups because they're sounding pretty incredible. Also, the fact a Warhammer mmo never caught on is such a missed opportunity.

I'd love to see it, but it would totally bomb. Game of Thrones isn't a great comparison because it has funny and (more importantly) charismatic characters. GoT is also relatively way more down to Earth and grounded. Granted, I don't know too much about the 40K universe beyond some wiki reading here and there, playing some of the games, and reading a few chapters of Horus Heresy, but I know it's WAY dryer and serious and humorless and charisma isn't something I'd attribute to any of the characters I've read about. Considering how much money you'd need to do it justice in live action, it would just bomb ultra hard. Makes way more sense to do animated movies through VoD.

Grey Knights are specialized daemon hunters, Custodes are the Emperor's bodyguards.
Custodes:
"They are to the Space Marines what those transhuman warriors are to common Guardsmen,"
Well goddamn.

The Adeptus Custodes are so revered that it is deemed heresy for the Administratum to record them ever losing a battle.
This is just hilarious

Look up the Ciaphas Cain books and there is your perfect entry point into how amazing the 40k universe is.

To further clarify on the links provided by the others, Grey Knights are top secret special forces Marines. They specialise in killing daemons. They wipe the minds of marines that see them like the Men in Black, any normal human is simply executed en mass. Like planet wide litteral death camps to remove any potential witness.

God, no. The last thing I want to hear is Sharlto Copley's grating, high-pitched voice.

Wow, this is just another level. The directing, animation, just everything is soooo awesome.

Answering to the question why GW don't hire him- the author is a professional artist with 12 years of experience, mentioned on Patreon. I think this is a "do it in free time" side-project for him.

Animated like this would be easier, sure, and more cost effective. But the universe is more than just the grimdark male heavy stuff portrayed as popular canon and it doesn't really follow any one particular character. Sure, the emperor and all the famous chapters/primarchs are important, but you could easily get away with a smaller movie covering any battle, scenario, or slice of life you could imagine. It's not locked into the setting at all, not more than Star Wars for instance, because the universe is so wide and varied.

Astartes are remorseless, fearless killing machines and the face of the universe/franchise, but there's major potential there to do basically anything.

Are Custodes and Grey Knights comparable in terms of power level then?

I've been out of the loop on WH 40K lore but not much is known about the Custodes and there are not many of them even compared to a Space Marine chapter. They mostly hole up with the Emperor's corpse and occasionally take on missions of vital importance to the Imperium but its sparing. They're on average probably above even the Grey Knights as they were works of the Emperor himself.

Grey Knights are like the SAS/Delta Force of Space Marines. They deal almost exclusively in sensitive situations (mainly demon incursions) and they are all psykers of varying power levels. Custodes are better warriors on an individual basis but they mainly guard Terra and the throne.

Grey Knights are Black Ship (ships that round up psychic individuals from imperial worlds to feed the emperor energy to keep him alive) prisoners that survive what is probably the hardest indoctrination process out there. All are mind wiped and given new identities.

A custode has a different genetic makeup than a normal astartes. They don't really age IIRC. They are grown from a young age rather than stapled together with implants like astartes.

I noticed there was a 2 on the vault door behind strange face dude that the video purposefully focuses on. The 2nd legion primarch is one of the two missing ones, wonder if it has something to so with that.

Fluff-wise? Grey Knights are the special ops you hear rumors about but never actually see, because they kill anyone that sees them.

Custodes? There's no real word equivalent. Imagine a three-time Harvard PhD graduate with the body of Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (guy who played Gregor Clegane on Game of Thrones), who received training from the ancient Spartans and also James Bond.

Rules-wise its not even close. Depending on gear, a single Custodes can take on five Grey Knights and win.

Damn the lore of 40k is awesome, I could get lost in it for ages. It's pretty perfect for converting into any sort of adaptation in multiple mediums it seems. I'm glad GW is relatively liberal with licensing out the property. There's a few upcoming games aren't there?

Man I really want to get into 40k series but thw lore is so rich and kind of boggling where to really start. So shorts/anime like this is perfect. Hard to believe it's fan made.

Even the Space Marines themselves are pretty varied, in part to give players freedom to design custom Chapters/Legions. You've got your honorable Monk Knights to your depraved monsters that aren't much better than the horrors they're fighting against. Then you have the ones with really weird or bizarre histories because of some crazy one off event they were involved in or because of how their chapter was started.

This man needs to be hired by GW to do media simply for his artistic direction. He's reached one of the highest visual potentials of the 40k franchise in just 4 minutes.

Who ever gets to see a Custodian? Grey Knights are rare but Custodians are stuff of legends.
Got to catch up on my lore, I think a force of them left with Guilliman though…

I'd say Deathwatch is closer to SAS/Delta Force of the Space Marines. Grey Knights are more akin to the CIA Special Activities Division.

I'd also go out on a limb and say that Custodes are probably more hardcore than Grey Knights. Grey Knights are all psykers, yes, but Custodes are all pretty much on Primarch levels. The War in the Webway was fought almost entirely between Custodes against a daemon incursion in the Emperor's Webway portal. They held out and repelled the incursion and managed to reseal the Webway portal. There's also division of the Adeptus Custodes called the Shadow Keepers. They guard a place called the Dark Cells beneath the Imperial Palace. There's not a lot of information about what exactly is in the Dark Cells, but it's described as holding ancient abominations, monstrosities, eldritch horrors and artifacts of great evil that even the Grey Knights couldn't handle. Whatever is being held in the Dark Cells is supposed to be so horrific that even the Custodians themselves are constantly on edge. Even despite that, the Shadow Keepers maintain their vigil over the Dark Cells.

With the opening of the Great Rift, a number of "occupants" of the Dark Cells disappeared. So the Shadow Keepers are actually out and about in the galaxy again, hunting down whatever escaped and they're closing up daemon incursions.

I suggest reading the emperor of mankind's wiki entry. Because everything surrounds him up until the end of the hours heresy, you get a pretty good general idea of what the storyline is and all the important stuff just by reading his history. You can then branch out from there.
