I want an Inquistor action RPG so fucking bad.

Leveling up to get more psyker powers, weapons, abilities, daemon familiars...……...and the lore and atmosphere...…..just get CD Projekt Red on it for gods sake!

Truly think it could be as big as Witcher/Cyperpunk 2077.

Who ever gets to see a Custodian? Grey Knights are rare but Custodians are stuff of legends.
Got to catch up on my lore, I think a force of them left with Guilliman though…

Pretty much everyone on Terra (earth). The Custodes General remarks in one of the books (Emperors legion) that there's ten thousand of them and they do more than just "patrol the walls".

There are also both Grey Knights and Custodes in that book together. The Custodes are slightly better but the Knights are pretty close with their psychic powers letting them edge out ahead every so often.

The important thing though is that Custodes don't see themselves as soldiers. They view themselves as philosophers, artists and so on who fight as a matter of duty, think like actual knights. Whereas Grey Knights are straight up soldiers through and through.

I'm sure the same was said of Game of Thrones at one point. A series centered on the inquisition could be whatever you wanted it to be. Or even rogue traders.
There are Game of Thrones fans now who contend the TV show's content is greatly diluted from what appears in the books. Similarly, The Walking Dead TV show's popularity took a massive dive after the comic faithful execution of two beloved characters.

The shorts depict them far more accurately than other mediums I seen. They are actually more like special forces commandos here instead of mindlessly charging zealots that gets themselves killed in the dozens I commonly see. I know the creator possible didn't have the budget to get voice actors, but them being silent cold killing machines makes it very fascinating to witness. A lot of tactics from boths sides are used here - makes it more interesting to see. It seems like the big guys in the beginning of episode 3 gave them information to deal with the space marines or they rebels got the information somehow, either way none of it worked. The space marines done everything efficiently like it is another day at work. Can't wait for more episodes.

I'd like to have the title changed to the proper spelling SPEHSSS MEHRENES.

That's a 180 on their previous approach then. I guess the backlash against them for their draconian approach didn't look too good.

I want to say that they have a new head overall, someone who actually supports the fun stuff like this because it makes them money. The previous CEO(CEO? The previous..lead person...) was stingy and cared about profits.

Here we go:
https://techraptor.net/content/games-workshop-2016-turnaround
At the time it was announced that Tom Kirby would be stepping down as CEO of Games Workshop, there was an air of cautious optimism among the Warhammer community. Many current and former fans at the time were not too happy with the current leadership, specifically with Tom Kirby's rather arrogant and myopic views of the business as a whole. His policies of utterly refusing to interact with the customer base at a company level, refusing to do any sort of advertisement or market research, and "minis first, game second" mentality made him seem more like an ostrich with its head in the sand than a savvy business executive. With games like Warmachine and Infinity gaining popularity and nipping at their heels, Games Workshop decide the best course of action was to simply stay the course and ignore the gigantic iceberg dead ahead.

The new CEO, Kevin Rountree, has proven to be the breath of fresh air the company has needed for a long time. 2016 has seen sweeping changes come to the company, and every major change has been greeted with a mixture of surprise and joy from the Warhammer playerbase as a whole. From actual interaction with its customers to reviving White Dwarf to the launch of Warhammer TV both on YouTube and Twitch, it appears the company has jerked the wheel over and avoided financial disaster.

More in the article.

I'm surprised we haven't gotten a huge AAA 40k game from Ubisoft or Square or WB. Seems like the perfect universe for a third person RPG a la Witcher, or a first person shooter RPG

Since Space Marines, it's been all Space Hulk and strategy games. And Deathwing was basically just first person Space Hulk
The relatively poorly received arpg that i was really hyped for :(

Too much hyper masculinity, too nihilistic. How many 40k fans are women? It would be hard as hell to get this on screen in any big budget incarnation faithful to the source material..
Yeah I think people would either be disappointed in the fact a major movie waters down a lot of what fans love about the universe or it goes hardcore and probably bombs because its humorless ultra violent and graphic grim dark stuff that's usually about a bunch of psychopathic super soldiers.
Which is why i think that a Cia.... *looks down the page*
Look up the Ciaphas Cain books and there is your perfect entry point into how amazing the 40k universe is.
*and sees this* ... son of a bitch. LMAO.

Still think he would make an excellent high budget telly series.

Seconding/Thirding/etc the Ciaphas Cain books. Can't go wrong with those.

On topic: Man, what is it with WH40k fans and fan movies. Looking damn good.

I wish these countless talented guys could get together instead of each of them doing their own thing.
I mean, it's not perfect, but I absolutely love the atmosphere in this trailer from some other guy:

(Come to think of it, that project seems dead? What a shame. The "Prologue" was a teensy bit rough around the edges, but nonetheless a very worthwhile endeavour.)

Anybody who likes Ciaphas Caine should read the Flashman novels, which is their inspiration. Granted Flashy is a lot more "villain protagonist" than "cowardly lion," but still.

I was going to create a thread about this yesterday. It's criminally under viewed. The quality is incredible, and the "accuracy" is just spot on.

The Ciaphas Cain series is great because it takes the Imperial Guard, particularly the Valhallans (basically Space Russians), and instead of putting them through nonsense "Enemy at the Gates" style frontal assaults Sandy Mitchell basically turned them into a highly capable mechanized infantry unit by modern standards.

Gaunt's Ghosts achieves the same, showing off the capability of a well trained and specialized unit like Tanith's First and Only. Who in this case is a more elite scouting unit.

Will definitely look in to it.

I wouldn't read Ciaphas Cain as the entry series to 40k. Much of the fun in the books comes from lampshading the regular 40k stuff. It's basically Blackadder in 40k.

Relations hadn't really turned frosty, however, until they'd refused to take part in the inter-regimental unarmed combat competition because the 597th had included some of our women in the team. This, Colonel Asmar curtly informed us, was 'unseemly'. To no-one's surprise except Asmar and probably Beije, their regimental champion was promptly and informally challenged to an impromptu bout the next time he wandered into the recreation deck. I have to report with a certain degree of satisfaction that he was subsequently pounded flat by Corporal Magot, a cheerfully sociopathic young woman who barely came up to his chin. (Which made little difference, as it only took her about a tenth of a second to bring it down to the level of her knee).

Though if that sounds great, go for it. Just keep in mind that it's very different from the rest.

I've been out of the loop on WH 40K lore but not much is known about the Custodes and there are not many of them even compared to a Space Marine chapter. They mostly hole up with the Emperor's corpse and occasionally take on missions of vital importance to the Imperium but its sparing. They're on average probably above even the Grey Knights as they were works of the Emperor himself.

The role of the Custodes seems to have evolved somewhat since the return of Guilliman. He sees it as a massive waste to have them all holded up on Terra, so he has brought them back into action across the galaxy, particularly during his new crusade. Add in the Primaris Space Marines, and the traditional Space Marines are suddenly looking kind of passé.

My knowledge of Warhammer is limited entirely to Warhammer Quest so I know nothing about 40k.

These episodes are amazing. I'm actually interested in the source material now.

" The Cryptman Chronicles"

first contact with the tyranid.

there was an excerpt I read of how a custode "thinks" in battle.

they are literally doing geometry/trig on how to engage the enemy and how to swing their blades from foe to foe (during combat), for maximum efficiency.
Custodes are terrifying monsters, they know countless languages, dead and active.

This kind of wankery is where I draw the line in 40k.

That specifically reminds me of Matt Ward's Ultramarines. Quoth 1d4chan:

"...Marneus Calgar is a patient tactical genius who considers the danger of an incoming projectile before taking cover. The image painted in the average person's mind in that case is one of Calgar analyzing a falling bomb until it strikes him in the head and explodes, at which point he decides, 'Yes, that one was dangerous, I probably should have taken cover from that one'."

Remember that original Warhammer 40k lore was a huge amalgation of tropes, other ideas, a great deal of imagination and passion, but none of it was to be taken at face value. The grimdark and over-the-top things were often taken to comical levels on purpose by the original creators who used that for their own light-hearted fun. Later on fans and authors and nowadays even GW staff failed to realise this or reject the comical aspects for grimdark and seriouz buzinezz taken at face value and we get...less than stellar stuff. The youtube lore videos from what I've seen are a part of this.

I like Space Marines are merciless angels of death...but I want Juergen looking at porn while waiting for Cain to try and talk himself out of another dangerous mission to balance it.

Not into the whole WH40K mythos but my goodness those clips, especially, the sound effects were fantastic. Those hand-cannon firing sound like distorted crackling of thunder sandwiched between conventional explosions.

What they are firing are essentially small rocket launchers. Each bullet is also a rocket powered projectile that upon discharging from the rifle propels itself forward even faster and then explodes when hitting a target.

Hence the very gruesome results of the HERETICS featured in the clips when hit.

Depends, what do you find interesting? The Imperium? Eldar? Tau? Orks? HERETICS?!

For me, I love the Imperial Guard of the Imperium, so I started with the light reading of the Ciaphas Cain novels and fell in love right there.

Since then I have been going through also Gaunt's Ghosts, Eisenhorn, expanded to (some) Space Marines through Armageddon and then some.

Definitely the Imperium of Man, particulary Space Marines and Imperial Guard.
Gaunt's Ghosts series for IG, Brothers of the Snake and Helsreach for the Marines. I'd also suggest the Carrion Throne and the Watchers of the Throne: The Emperor's Legion for Inquisition / Custodes action.
Or maybe the Red Tithe if you want more brutal marines. The main plot is the Carcharodons going to a prison planet to gather their red tithe - adults to enslave as their servants and kids for their recruits.

I've heard the term "Heresy" in myriad memes fearing 40K. I'm intrigued. Sounds very god revering game (iirc, that God being an emperor).

Seconding this. Eisenhorn is competently written (putting them a million miles above most 40k fiction), and a better introduction to the setting than Ciaphas Cain. Cain is good, but works best as a light piss take once you are familiar with the universe IMO
Way back when I started WH40K literature I started with the Space Wolves omnibus, I still recommend that one. It starts with a child and goes all the way through the selection process, turning into a Space Marine, then the training of a Space Marine. Its a great starting point if you don't have any background on Space Marines.

The Emperor banned all religions while He was active, but after He got stuck in a vegetative state on the Golden Throne, people started worshipping him more and more until it became the state religion and started referring to Him as the God-Emperor.

Most commonly, Heresy involves what real-world politics would call High Treason: willingly consorting with Chaos, unwillingly consorting with Chaos, or betraying the Imperium to Xenos, which the Imperium gravely forbids, and in particular anyone guilty of merely suggesting anything good about Chaos will receive a retribution of Inquisitorial proportions. However, heresy, depending on the tolerance of your planetary government, can also include blasphemy against or defamation of the Emperor and/or the Imperium; saying anything against the Imperial Creed, which details pretty much everything not related to the veneration of the Emperor.

Wow, thanks for this.

In many ways Imperium has become what he never wanted it to become. Even Roboute Guilliman, Primarch of Ultramarines, was appalled by what Imperium had become during his state of death and after his father (Emperor) was bound to Golden Throne. Examples being viewing Emperor as a God and center of worship, lost of technical knowledge, worship of technology over its advancement because of religious fears etc.

Definitely has certain parallels in our reality. I have always found WH40K's fetishizing of war (as a perpetual state of existence) very American. Plus the religiosity of it all something out of today's KSA/Vatican. In the end, it is fiction that stretches the realities of this world.
