Nvidia and Asus are announcing the world's first 500Hz G-Sync display at Computex 2022 today. While we saw a prototype 500Hz gaming monitor earlier this year, Asus is promising a shipping 24-inch 500Hz TN panel that's designed for esports titles running at 1080p. Asus has not yet announced pricing or a release date for its new ROG Swift 500Hz monitor, though.

The announcement comes just over two years since Nvidia and Asus teamed up to introduce 360Hz gaming monitors for esports at CES 2020. PC gamers have typically purchased 144Hz gaming monitors, and even 240Hz panels still aren't particularly common. So 500Hz might sound like overkill, but Nvidia claims it will make a difference for competitive gamers who want the best of the best.

Naturally, to power a 500Hz monitor you'll also need a powerful gaming PC and GPU. Rumors suggest Nvidia will launch its next-gen RTX 4090 card this summer, which would be an ideal companion for a 500Hz panel. Asus' ROG Swift 500Hz monitor is 1080p, which means games like CS:GO, Valorant, and Overwatch should be able to hit the frame rates required to really make use of a 500Hz panel with a high-end GPU.

I can just barely perceive a difference after 80-90fps. 500 feels like you'd be falling for a placebo.

I want one to play one of those really old games where the game logic is tied to framerate.

The human eyes can't see the difference past 24 fps, that's why movies are shot that way. This is pointless, as is trying to play games above 30 fps

I'd rather my monitor look really nice than run at 500hz. It seems a bit excessive honestly but it's probably just for esports teams.

This is going to be more about latency than perceivable difference in smoothness.

In e-sports every 1mhz can make a difference.

There is no way you'll get close to 500 fps in any modern game.
Probably not even in cs:go?

I'm pretty darned sensitive to framerate differences, but I feel like I legitimately struggle to feel the difference between 120hz and 144hz, even up to 165 hz. I'm wondering if this would even be enough of a jump to be recognizable/justifiable for me.

CSGO
4K/600+fps isn't uncommon in CS:GO.
That would be extremely difficult to reach even with a high end rig. For reference I play 16:9 1440p and get around 300-400 with my 3080ti, 32GB high speed RAM and 5800x. The game has limits due to how the engine works, it quickly gets CPU limited at higher FPS.

Sitting with 1440p/165hz here. This 500hz is mad!

While 500hz is impressive, the monitor is still 1080p so no thanks

how many hz is real life? i need that.

on the real though. i remember when they first reach a certain number there was apparent massive power draw. Is that a concern at this number or was that like a bug or something? hope someone can clarify.

Very low resolutions with temporal upscaling could be interesting.

Although the CPU feeding GPU will be the limiting factor.

Just kidding, thinking about this now, Quake 3 Arena would be sick as hell on this screen.

There's been multiple times my monitor has gone down to 120hz from 240hz and I notice it immediately just with the mouse movement.

But even then, I can't imagine this being all that different at 500hz AND I can barely hit 240 in Overwatch. No chance to drive that.
