ITT, predict for the NPD August 2019 retail period (August 4-31, 2019) for U.S. hardware sales.

What is NPD?: NPD is one of the main retail tracking firms in the U.S., and also about the only one who specifically goes into detail on video games sales. This thread is to predict what the NPD hardware sales will be for the most recent month. NPD months are defined by the National Retail Federation (find calendar links here).
What do I win?: Bragging rights. We also keep track of predictions over the year and have an annual contest using "points." Still just bragging rights, but SalesEra followers have fun seeing how well we can do with it. See here for details on the point calculations.
Why are there still predictions when official NPD numbers are not released?
Trust me said:
To have fun? To share thoughts and speculation with a like mined group of people? To be able to communicate directly with individuals who study this industry for a living?

With Madden's first days counting for last month, this month is looking rather bleak from a SW perspective. Also curious to see what impact (if any) the New Switch model has.

Tbh, it's hard to even find the will/ energy to make/care about any prediction at this point.
I hope I make it till the end of the year, just to wrap it.

Probably a dumb question, but how do we know who had the best prediction when we don't know the actual numbers?
this is a very common misunderstanding, but I am happy to be able to give you a detailed look behind the curtain of the fascinating world of data aggregation.

a research group of reset era key members established a system to continuously obtain data sets from which this thread's results can be derived. After early attempts of analysing and merging multiple publicly available information sources like business reports, PR statements and feces collected in stakeholder caféterias, we came to the conclusion that a more direct contact under the built of trust and cooperation would be much more effective and lead to more convincing and satisfying results.

so, a few days before NPD numbers are published to clients, we are now sending out neatly optimised infomercial mails to carefully selected partners like industry analysts, publishers' upper management and manufaturers to start a faithful conversation about the downsides of premature ejaculation, a looming heritage from a nicaraguan businessman or simply the existence of quite bewildering webcam material of uncommon leisure time occupations. After a few months of tweaking and optimizing, we are by now happy with the actual response rate and quality and, as we all know that the industry is following this thread, we can assure everyone who might be concerned that the movie files have been erased as promised.

I'm just making predictions from inertia. Maybe I'll stop in 2020. I can't see anything changing the standings until next November.

The numbers are available but just not publicly. Since they're not public, the results are intentionally obfuscated (e.g. no numeric results, just the top few for the month listed) to prevent reverse-engineering them from the results. The annual results still use the full results, though.

Continuing from the July thread.

The Switch Lite seems like a 2DS that isn't awful, so I think it will have a more noticeable impact. It also isn't being marketed like the 2DS which is a plus. Correct me if I am wrong, but so far the Switch hasn't actually had any deals where its price went below MSRP. Most have been either gift cards or bundles, so the Lite being the first time the Switch goes under $299.99 could have a larger impact. Regardless, the Switch will be setting some records this year for current gen consoles. The software lineup being solid is another plus on top of all of that.

That's correct - MSRP held at $299.99 last year, just with bundles.

While many of us were underwhelmed with the Dec NPD performance and Q3 shipments (hype got the best of us), its important to note that in terms of nominal consumer spending, Switch Q3/Dec19 was close to record highs.

At ~1.77M units sold at $299 (DEC 18), we're in the vicinity of spending in the mid $500 millions. This is in line with the peak months of the PS2/PS4/Wii/360 outside of the all time historic outlier of Dec 2009 where the Wii shot over $750 million. It's really hard to break the 1.5M mark at this price level and no 299 console has ever hit 2M (Wii at $249 was the highest MSRP to go over 2M). The $199 price is going to work wonders.

Same trend holds true for the entirety of Q3 FY18. Looking at Nintendo's reported shipment figures and ballparking consumer spend:

Does anyone have data on Wii/DS price/cut history?

Going by super rough MSRP figures for DS/Wii/NSW, I think Switch most likely had the biggest quarter for a single piece of Nintendo HW in terms of revenue.

Mjdn3TI.png

The Wii 09 revenue figure is definitely too high, as I used the $249.99 figure, but know that there was a price cut in Dec. Some of those later DS years have to be off as well - as there were multiple models moving units any movement of older models would bring the ASP down (though XL model should compensate for that).

I'll be happy to update with more granular data if anyone has it.

I think this helps paint the picture of price being a constraint. 9.42M @ 299.99 is greater spending than peak Wii for a single quarter (and that's without the Wii Sports bundle appeal). I think, given the overall package that the NSW delivers at $299.99, it's hard to expect units to break into the 8 figures. Same thing happened for Dec 2018 US sales - cracking 2M @$299.99 would have been the highest MSRP to hit that watermark in a single month.

FWIW, I think the highest hardware revenue in a single quarter is probably PS4 Q3 FY16 (PS4 Pro launch). They shipped 9.7M that quarter which is also higher than any of the PS2's quarters.

Notes
Welcome to Madden Month Oh. It launched in July this year.

Well what's the point of August then?

Besides Madden, August rarely has anything of note, and towards the end of a generation even Madden can't stop sales from falling from July.

Xbox
So while Xbox One doesn't have the best drops going from June to July thanks to June deals, August usually improves over July thanks to bundles. 2014 was the first Madden bundle of the gen, 2015 had a good Best Buy TV deal in the middle of the month and the release of both the Madden 15 and Gears UE bundles. 2016 had the release of the Xbox One S, so obviously that performance is something that won't be replicated again. 2017 actually saw a drop thanks to a (relatively) impressive July rise over June thanks to Amazon Prime Day. 2018 had a great up to $300 trade in deal for the Xbox One X at GameStop that lasted all month, in addition to a free game deal.

2019 August has literally nothing and it follows a July boosted by Amazon Prime Day. It's also right before a rush of new games at the beginning of September and half a dozen bundles for NBA and Gears 5. This will be an incredibly slow month for Xbox.

Removing the outlier of the Xbox One S launch, the weekly average rise is +6% with the only drop being -13% (2017) and the largest rise being +21% (2014).

PlayStation
PS4 is pretty straight forward. Had a +2% increase in 2014 thanks to the first new Madden release after launch, -4% in 2015 from a good July thanks to GameStop and Amazon giving Madden 16 for free with every new PS4 purchase, and -1% in 2016 thanks to Madden 17 and No Man's Sky which sold 508K that month. 2017 saw the biggest drop yet thanks to a standard month following a good July that saw it going for $229 during amazon Prime Day. 2018 had an extremely limited 500 Million PS4 Pro release that was enough to boost sales over July.

2019 has a week of the PS4 selling at $249, and then the week after a Fortnite bundle was released. Not sure what impact a Fortnite bundle has anymore in late 2019, so expectations should be in check.

The weekly average drop is -3% with the largest rise being +5% (2018) and the biggest drop being -17% (2017).

Nintendo
The 3DS averages a drop of -9% with the only rise being +39% (2012) and the biggest drop being -30% (2015).

Switch has the launch of the brand new model with improved battery life at no extra charge at $299. This model was announced back in the middle of July and has a full month to impact sales. How it affects sales right before the Switch Lite will be interesting to see.

Recap
August is on average a slower month than July, even with Madden. Something like a new model launch will increase the month over July (but what month wouldn't see that).

The biggest August ever recorded during the 7th gen was the Wii with 453K back in 2008. Second biggest? Wii again with 404K back in 2007.

The biggest August ever recorded during the 8th gen was the Xbox One with 275K in 2016. Second biggest? PS4 with 208K back in 2015.

Continuing from the July thread.

Ah, I'm glad we're continuing this.

Yeah, the revenue number is important to consider, IIRC the Switch had the second best month ever for a system over $249 (PS2 Dec 2001 was higher) unit-wise. $299 simply isn't impulse-buy territory. Unfortunately without splits we can't roughly calculate revenue, but that's just the way it is. I think another record (for this gen) holiday season is in the cards, even if the AC delay hurt.

Agreed. I think all factors (price-point/multiple platforms/stacked SW slate/mainline Pokemon effect) finally give it the shot at 2M.

Makes sense to me. Per Famitsu it did 213K in Japan for the equivalent 4 weeks and I believe the new model was available earlier in NA so it may have had an impact. If we want to purport that the new model may have had less of an effect in the US, we could counter with the fact that it seems the FE and AC seem to have performed relatively stronger vs the JP market. Aside from January, every month in 2019 has seen NPD > MC/Famitsu (no numbers for June but Mat confirmed that NSW was up; no numbers for July, but the sentiment I gathered was flat or slightly down YoY which wouldn't be enough to drop under the Famitsu July figure).

Not officially. They mentioned it on their website, but haven't seen any mention in stores of an improved battery life. Not sure that would've made much of a difference, then.

That's kind of a missed opportunity. Apparently, they did a bit of advertising in Japan, and the week it released sales tripled week on week. I guess we won't see a similar effect for the US then
