Australia
so a question about internet and wireless and such

When I move back to Aus in Summer, the house I'll be living in currently has a home office close to the front of the house where the phoneline is but most of the computers and devices are down the back of the house.

When I've been staying there in the past, the internet down the back is rather slow and spotty and I've been using an old wifi extender as a stop gap. Now I'm looking for something more permanent to get better internet where i need it (the house is currently ADSL2 but will be switching to NBN (over standard phone lines, the house is about 10 years old so the copper should be OK).

So Better router? Wifi Mesh thing? get cat5 put in the walls from the home office to the back of the house? Get a phone point put in down the back and have the router there? Knock the house down and start again (not really an option).

Also any recs for NBN for South Brisane/Logan would be great too. The place currently has Belong but when i last lived there years ago I had Internode.

I think Aussie Broadband is generally considered the best ISP.

And personally I think wired connections are the way to go for your most important devices, if you can find a way to make that work.

NPP is rolling out to Westpac Group brands (BankSA, Bank of Melb, St Georges) now.
Citibank later this year.
UBank and HSBC delayed until next year.

Well soon Canberra could be known for more than porn, pollies and fireworks...add dope possession and growing to that list.

The ACT Legislative Assembly is expected to pass a bill legalising possessing and growing cannabis for personal use in the nation's capital.

The private member's bill on Wednesday from Labor backbencher Michael Pettersson would allow Canberrans over 18 to possess 50 grams of cannabis and grow two plants.
Labor needs the support of the Greens to pass the bill, and they have offered their conditional support.
While legalising the drug might clash with federal drug laws, Mr Pettersson on Tuesday told AAP he was "very confident" there wouldn't be any problems.
But in a report on the bill, the ACT government said it could not rule out people being prosecuted under Commonwealth laws.

I wonder if this leads to retail trade soon?

Well, PSVR will be compatible with PS5. Personally, I'm hoping they just keep functionality with the current Move controllers for legacy support, but any PS5 native VR games should use a new control system. If that's the case, I think it'd warrant holding onto. But if you stick it on Gumtree you might get a decent amount for it.

Just so people know, Amazon currently has a $5 discount for a lot of game pre-orders for Prime members applied upon confirming a purchase. BUT in its T&C it says this does not apply to pre-existing pre-orders (despite their "pre-order price guarantee").

So, check out if it's cheaper than you would pay and decide if you want to cancel any pre-orders and re-order each individually (discount applies once per order). You shouldn't have to pay more just because you pre-ordered months ago rather than pre-ordering today.

Hi Aus ERA!!

I am looking forward to doing my Post Graduation in Australia. Currently got offers from University of Melbourne (Master of IT), University of Sydney (MS IT + MS IT Management) and UNSW (M IT). But I am UTTERLY confused as to choose what!!!!! Is the combined degree from UniSydney able to compensate for it's lower world ranking compared to Melbourne (or does it even matter?).

It would be really helpful if you guys can share your experiences and opinions regarding these universities. I don't know who else to ask so had to ask my ERA brothers in Australia;

Thanks.

All three are incredibly high end universities, the difference really is only on paper. Different ranking systems rank things differently and are quite frankly, largely a complete wank.

So I ended up choosing University of Sydney over others, largely due to the double degrees on offer. Recently I heard from some guys that international students rarely get good jobs because most of the companies want a graduate with PR. Is this true? I am taking out an education loan to fund my education and will heavily depend on my post graduation job to pay it back. But if I can't even get a job, that would be very troublesome. Kindly guide!!

It very much depends on the field you are in. We moved here on temp visa's but my wife is a GP which is massively in demand. Same with Engineers and people who work in infrastructure, project management etc. I can't answer for IT. If they are advertising in your field overseas then chances are they are happy to take temporary visa applicants. Good luck and welcome to Sydney!

Thanks Mavis!! Appreciate the advice. Can't really predict the job market 2 years from now so I can't draw any conclusion. Will join the program in Feb 2020.
I hope I can rely on AusERA for any more help I need!!!

Finally switched from Telstra Cable Internet to HFC Telstra NBN...and...constant dropoffs for at least 5 minutes each time all day today - and speeds are shocking. I'm in the SmartModem Gen2 or whatever its called and this is the worst internet/online experience ive ever had. Ever.

What the hell is this NBN sh** and how do i UPGRADE back to what i've been using the last 3 years?? Pretty sure its not telstra as its been rock solid since i had cable installed, so it must be this additional box NBN installed?

Welcome to my life.

The added bonus is that it features slower downstream speeds too.

So is it more, or less of a pain in the arse to go from DSL to NBN or cable to NBN?
At least from DSL to NBN you'd have the possibility of higher speeds than you were getting previously. Whereas my 100 Mb/s HFC NBN connection is slower than the downstream speeds I was getting on cable.

I can't speak to the reliability of the FTTN service though, I sincerely hope it's a fucktonne better than the HFC service.

Unfortunately you're going from telstra's own, lesser used service to the broader hfc service. Telstra provisioned appropriately, nbn designed based on what Telstra told them. Which as you can guess, is not 100% accurate.

Our NBN just gets put back 6 months every time it gets within a month of being available. This has been going on since 2017. My ADSL is shit anyway, goes down as soon as it rains, as we're getting FTTN that probably won't change as the problem is underground cabling in between the new node location and my house. Problem is and will continue to be that it goes down whenever it rains but is back up by the time Telstra arrive as it dries out, occasionally one of them will inspect a pit, make some changes and I'll get a cleaner line for a month or two before it goes tits up again. At this point wondering how much to get FTTB put in as the node and exchange are only 30m away.

I'm lucky, based in Newcastle on FTTN and once they fixed a corroded copper joint when we moved in our connection hasn't skipped a beat. Congestion wise we're okay too as we're probably benefitting from some of the extra infrastructure in the nearby CBD. That said I know some people in the same suburb that have terrible connections.

I'm luckier, in Geelong we had a company called Neighbourhood Cable roll out cable pretty much everywhere around 10ish (if not more) years ago. They were bought out by TransACT who were then bought by iiNet. $80 for unlimited data on HFC, usually get around 300mbps down, about 100 up.

I meant lucky in terms of the shitfight that is FTTN, didn't mean to start a pissing contest.

Oh, fair enough, sorry :( I'm literally grateful everyday I don't have anything NBN-related to deal with, and it doesn't make me any less angry that there are thousands of others who have to put up with it (my in-laws included).

All good, I probably could have worded that better :)

I know some people who were on cable with iiNet that got the unlocked speeds. Crazy to see the speedtest results over 350.

I have been very lucky with NBN. We built in a new area, so the only option was FTTH. Have had 100mbit since late 2014, only about a drop out a year and most of them only 1-3 hours. I think we had some small issues with congestion at one point, but then it seemed to go away after a month or so.

And if you want to have a pissing contest, we should get people to post work speeds!
