Greens will poll 9-10% like always, a lot of polls have them at silly numbers like 14.5%! Shows the limitiations of polling as you approach 0.

Libs sure as shit had better not "scrape in". To unironically paraphrase Lisa Simpson, Labor/Shorten's campaign seems to have the momentum of a runaway freight train. But in this case, what makes him seem so popular is the Libs doing this:

Probably not too significant. Its only a huge significant issue in places like the United States because of the sociopolitical aspect of "soft" drug consumption.
Plus how many users do we have really? When I visited Vancouver around 7 years ago, every second person I met smoked pot on the weekends. It was fairly open and very widespread even among older generations. Here, it's much more limited to younger people and even then only a small sliver of them.

So which party is going to make dope legal? I wonder how big of a vote shift that would get...
I don't know a great deal about Australian politics as I'm not yet a citizen, but I would guess if the greens get a boost I could see them gaining leverage over Labour to pass future bills. If Labour just threw it out to a referendum then their hands would be clean with the religious right, not that they'd vote for Labour and a fairer society, or a safe harbour for refugees anyway... Anyway I believe there are issues with Commonwealth restrictions on Weed use and sale that would have to be dealt with first? Though Canada legalised it and being a member of the Commonwealth you'd think they'd have the same problem. In other words I haven't a fucking clue.

The thing keeping weed legalisation down in Australia isn't really religious conservatism, it's the hotel and alcohol lobby (ie; the people who run clubs and RSLs and liquor stores).

I feel as though it could be another avenue for profits for the likes of the liquor store lobby, but as smoking is banned from pubs and clubs, widespread cannabis use would cut into the hotel industry's bottom line.

Given their privatisation of prison systems I'd be surprised if it's a bigger legalisation issue over there.

Many parents and grandparents grew up in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, they've been around weed enough I think. I agree we wouldn't be Canada numbers though.

T-shirt or bumper sticker worthy mate. Can't see why Canada can have it and we can't.

Thanks, I know who I'm likely voting for. Climate change and dope friendly government. Shit just took a look at their vision page and this mantra is something I can get behind.

People over there absolutely do give a shit about legalizing cannabis considering the racial element of the criminalisation of cannabis. That aspect just doesn't exist in Australia.

Sure the populace over there want it more, I meant from a legal/government standpoint. I assume there is less resistance in Australia as we don't have those profiteering and lobbying aspects.

Shorten's response to the attempted mudslinging by newscorp is worth a watch.

It's nice to see him gain some traction over the last few days, especially since Morrison has doubled down on his incoherent waffling and shouting.

edit didn't realise it was a condensed version. I'll try to find the full clip.

I bet $20 on Sportsbet that Bill Shorten would win the debate. But as there is no objective measure I have no idea what will happen to it.

Maybe you can provide the verdict of expert witness?

Don't ask him about the nazi party though!

B-b-but they're SOCIALISTS.

I watched the entire debate (much to my gf's annoyance) and Morrison has nothing to offer. Sabre rightly picked him up on claiming we were back in surplus and his only counterpoint to Labor's policy initiatives were that the Government was already doing a great job.

"We brought the government back to surplus next year".

Is there a good guide anywhere to these senate micro parties? I'm currently torn between putting the nazis last, or the anti-vaxxers, but there are all these shady micro parties on the ballot (84 candidates in QLD) and I don't want to accidentally preference someone worse.

Not that it matters really as I always go Greens->Labour->LNP, but it's the principle of the thing.

I tweeted that, and about 5 other people I follow on Twitter did exactly the same thing. Guy's a legit moron.

I roll my eyes every time I see someone from a media outlet talk up the coalition's economic credentials. They only thing they're good at is maintaining the status quo while using clever accounting tricks and weasel words to make it sound like they've actually achieved something.

These dishonest fuckers need to go.

* Guaretee doesn't extend to the unemployed, underemployed, disabled, those concerned about the environment, any young person, refugees, those in nursing homes, homeless...

*Only 4% of the population are eligible to benefit from our economic policies. Some legislation referred to during the election campaign may not exist. Conditions apply.

Still undecided on the senate ballot paper. So far, my preference flows look like this:

  1. Greens
  2. ALP
  3. Independents for Action on Climate Change
  4. Animal Justice
  5. HEMP Party
  6. Pirate Party
  7. LNP
  8. Shooters and Fishers
  9. UAP
  10. Religious parties
  11. Anti-vaxxers
  12. Nazis
Some I'm not sure where to place. Sustainable Australia say all the right things when it comes to climate change, but they're also about hard caps on immigration, which just sounds like a backdoor entrance for racism. Same with the Climate Action! Immigration Action! Accountable Politicians! , which is vague enough to be reassuring, but could also hide some nasty stuff. As of right now, I'm putting them just behind UAP.

Sustainable Australia are NIMBYs/"FUCK OFF WE'RE FULL". Same goes for Climate Action! Immigration Action! Accountable Politicians!

Sustainable Australia is particularly annoying in state elections because the state has fuck all to do with immigration and they just stand around yelling no at everything.

This thread might help:

And hey, we suck, but at least we're not the UK:

Looks like the Brexit Party has sucked up whatever Conservative voters are left. Same goes for Labour and Lib Dems.

Considering UK runs FPTP, the conservatives vote splitting is actually a good thing ironically.

Liberals are running hard on a platform of "everyone shut the fuck up, don't say anything racist... don't say anything at all George and Tony, in fact leave the country for a while"

Sad but effective so far.

I hate having a religious fundamentalist for PM so fingers crossed they are out on their ass. If it doesn't, expect the religious freedom flood gates to be opened on day 1 and all sorts of awful things will be pushed.
