For conference calls, not a lot of our people have proper audio setups at home so they wanted to dial in using their phone however there was a fixed number of numbers they could use to dial in with.

Another one for us was connecting to VPN to get on the work network. Connections tanked with the number of people connecting.

A lot of the systems are prepared for some people working from home, not a majority.

Yeah this is all correct. Hopefully some of this stuff can be worked though soon but I'm not feeling confident

Huh alright, thanks for clarifying. For myself my work is already mostly cloud based anyway. If anything it's kinda baffling why I even need to come to the office other than not having to use my own personal bandwidth lol.

Local Council Elections still going ahead in QLD. Yikes! What a bone head move. Fuck your elections just do postal voting for a few more weeks or better yet just postpone the whole thing till we get a better idea how this pandemic is gonna play out. Why QLD government is taking this huge risk is beyond me.

For anyone here that rents the following amendments to our (Tas) tenancy act are being debated now, and will likely be replicated across other jurisdictions in the next few days:

No evictions for rent arrears during the "emergency period"
Emergency period is 120 but can be extended by the Minister to up to seven months total;
Hardship terminations for tenants/landlords affected by Covid19 (currently, unlike other jurisdictions, we have no general hardship provision), upon application and provided it wouldn't make things worse;
Exclusion from having to return the property in the same condition at the end of the tenancy if covid makes it impractical;
No inspections whatsoever unless there is an emergency, or urgent or emergency repairs are required. No routine inspections, open homes etc at all.

We're asking for the eviction moratorium to be broadened, because it'll be very easy to use another reason as a fig leaf. We also want a moratorium on rent increases.

As a network engineer who literally just spent the last week trying to drastically expand VPN capacity for a major Australian company, there is nothing magical about it. Even just think about basic networking rules - everyone has to have an IP. But you designed your VPN to only accommodate 30% of staff. Why not just design it for 120% capacity or whatever? Because the licences are really expensive so it would be a huge waste of money. So now you've got to go out and modify the IP pool so you can increase capacity. That means new routing. That means new firewall rules everywhere for those new IPs.

Pushed on the terminology of "government largesse", in a time of economic crisis, because of a pandemic, Eric Abetz says:

Anyway, just broadly on the handling of this by the government(s) - they've obviously made some pretty big stuff ups. Communication has been a problem (I guarantee if Morrison had his time again he wouldn't have done that whole "I'm still going to the footy!" thing), and the Ruby Princess disaster was, well, a disaster.

But I get what they're doing. Based on the medical advice, if everyone actually complied with the regulations as they are now, the curve would flatten significantly. So if they can do they without causing the huge problems that a complete shutdown cause, then I see why they're trying.

I also think there's this weird expectation of perfection. Government is a mess at the best of times, especially when you come to matters of federal/state jurisdiction and powers. In the middle of a never before seen global pandemic, then yeah there's going to be a lot of bumps. And it is never before seen because the last time this happened the only way you could get from country to country was on a boat.

That's not to mention the terrible administration, the mixed messages etc. I'm not an Arden stan like a lot of people, but look at her gov's response (or even Andrews's) to see that it could be a lot better. If Boris Johnson's government is less psycho than yours, you need to do some self reflection.

But what they're doing is causing huge problems either way. They're forcing retailers to stay open because they're absolutely reluctant to hand bailouts which they are going to need anyway because no one is buying anything even if they are opened!

So right now retailers are forced to stand people down and force them through the inefficient centrelink system in order to keep operating instead of going into stasis for awhile as the goverment pay to keep people's wages going.

So my Mum has been in Brisbane at my brothers for the past month. She is due to fly home to Melbourne this Saturday (despite my advice to return much earlier).

My brother who lives with her (but stays the majority of his time at his girlfriends house) is refusing to pick her up from the airport.

She will have to self isolate yeah? What about if I were to pick her, would I have to self isolate too? I'll just be driving her from the airport to Ferntree Gully, then I'll return home on the otherside of the city.

Can she even get a taxi or Uber? I'm not sure how it works in regards to that. It will probably change by Saturday anyway.

As far as I am aware, Victoria is not making people self-isolate if they have only traveled domestically.

That is of course unless they show symptoms, in which case she should self-isolate (but that goes for everyone)

It is not enforceable for her to self isolate as Victoria currently has no domestic border restrictions. However it is strongly recommended that you do so.

It all does come back to trying to ease the economy, what a load of wank. Putting money before lives. The faster the gov decides to get off it's ass and announce proper shutdowns the better. What could have blown over in one month has been extended to three and no doubt will be extended to 6+.

Yep, the construction industry is flying under the radar and I have no idea why, we should've been shutting down job-sites a week or so ago. It seems insane we're trying to push through this.

Edit: Public schools are now online (pupil-free days). Schools are open for students that cannot stay at home. Holidays stay for 10th of April.

Early Childhood services like Daycare still remain open.

our company just moved to 90% WFH - so that's 1200 contact centre staff (which includes the QA & call recording systems for legal compliance) + ~450 support & services. Our IT team turned this around in 20 days, which is fucking incredible.

The kids' school emailed today saying unless you're an essential worker or absolutely cannot WFH or not attend work, keep kids at home so they can focus on supporting essential workers & kidsfor who school is a safe space from their home life.

I would imagine similar messages are going out from other QLD schools too.

$2K a month is reasonable enough for a single person to pay for rent and food. Since most families usually have 2 sources of income, you're possibly looking at $4K / month for, at minimum, 2 people.
Unless you want to save for a PS5 or buy a VR headset, this should keep your head above water well enough for the duration of this crisis, unless you're a father of 4 kids.

$550 a week is amazing considering the conditions people on Newstart were on. Gurl Singapore ain't giving free change, last I heard.

It's around half the median wage, and the median rent in Hobart, Melbourne and Sydney is around $450-$550 a week. The minimum wage is 50% more, and still isn't considered a living wage.

Don't give me the condescending poor people can't manage their money and have too many kids stuff, thanks.

PM confirms expanded COVID-19 testing criteria after National Cabinet meeting

Prime Minister Scott Morrison confirms the number of people able to get tested for COVID-19 has expanded to include healthcare workers and prisoners who have a fever.

There is a now new category called "suspect cases".

Under the changes you can be tested if two or more other people test positive in an aged care facility, military setting, boarding school, prison, detention centre, remote Indigenous community or somewhere else where there has been an outbreak.

It is now at the GP or clinician's discretion to test you if you have symptoms of Covid-19 in a geographical areas where there is a higher risk of community transmission. In short, that's an area where more people are testing positive.

Furthermore healthcare, aged care and residential care workers can now get a test if they have a fever or respiratory illness.

And finally, if you have been admitted to hospital with a fever and respiratory symptoms you can get a test for coronavirus.
