The art department on this game deserves so much better. Agony has to be one of the best looking shitty games I've ever played.

If Agony played like RE 7 it could have been cool. Waiting on Scorn, hope that game is good and also plays like RE 7.

Studio should realize that capitalizing on shock value doesn't work forever, especially after your first game gets absolutely thrashed critically.

I still like the idea and what the game was going for. A horror game set in an ultra violent depiction of Hell sounds like a no brainer.

Unfortunately, aside from the bugs and gameplay, people criticized Agony as being "edgy", when that's pretty much what He'll is supposed to look like by most standard depictions (other than something like Dante's depiction of the circles).

Looks godawful. I mean this was just a concept video and they couldn't even make it look remotely interesting.

Yeah I never understood the criticism that its "going too far" in its depiction its literally hell, im expecting the worst things ive ever seen to be in there, go for it. The game looked shit gameplay wise tho.

Of course it will be Succubus. It's always the monster with tits that gets a sequel.

Man, the art for Agony and this new things are pretty solid, but the gameplay is just awful and this also looks pretty eeh. But yeah, I wouldn't want to live in the world of Agony, which means they're doing a good job of depicting a dark gruesome space. Hopefully Scorn will do what we need.

So the Hell theyve created still looks kinda cool, but from a gameplay standpoint it seems they learned nothing from the critical pummeling Agony took, because it looks there is very little to actually do

Hell isn't a real place, and it's been visited by creators time and time again. Agony's artwork is pretty good, but their vaginal, misogynist, rape-obsessed interpretation of hell just reads like the worst Bible thumping version they could have envisioned. Their portfolio shows that this isn't a one off, either, they both are tantalized and afraid of the female form, and they take every opportunity to brutalize it in videogames. It's just boring ass religious misogyny taken to level 11 for the torture porn aspect of it.

I never cared enough to check Agony more than a little but I would think those horrible things are something to be expected in hell? I only saw a bunch of tits and weird vagina apples but if there are dicks being punched or ripped off then it might be ok? I guess im ok with seeing a bunch of horrible things if its being done to everyone.
Guess it depends if its made to horrify you or make a small amount of people horny.

One of the thing that puzzles me about Agony is the number of people who seem clueless that the game was overhauled and re-released post-release and garnered very positive reactions on Steam. People keep talking about how the gameplay is "trash" presumably because they read a review of the old version or played the old version, which is a rather different beast to the new version.

The console version versions are getting overhauled at some point in the future, too.

Damn, the art style in this series is so wasted on such a poor gameplay loop. Outside of the shock factor, it just feels so bland. They could do so much more with what they have, instead of just pushing out another Agony reskin.

But that sounds like a lot of other games, looks pretty and rest of it is poor gameplay loop.

One of the excuses they used they couldn't make the Unrated version was they company had almost gone bankrupt, which is clearly a massive fucking lie considering they already have two games in the works. The devs are both extremely toxic (they clearly hate women) and liars.

So I think the animations are a bit too rough to be honest,
The fighting animations and how enemies telegraph their attacks all need more work, and the basic movement seems to be too slow\clunky.

Yet the art style remain strong as ever, and their character designs is so freaky that it is pretty good (that huge boss is quite an abomination). The camera movement is interesting, I don't know if they will have such a stylish use of cinematic camera or if this is only for the sake of their 'Concept Gameplay' video, personally I hope they make it a part of the game.

I get the feeling that Madmind Studio are maybe a bit hasty in their development. Not so long ago they announced their new game 'Paranoid' and now this ?, Both games got potential, but they need to be the main focus, they need an absurd amount of polish, and maybe taking a bit more time before revealing them.

I will keep an eye though, both Paranoid and Succubus seems to have an interesting story.

Can you shed some light on how Agony Unrated compares to the original release ?, I wanted to try it out but a friend who admittedly played only the original advised me otherwise, though the Unrated version seems to have a far better reviews, but I want to be sure.

My understanding is that there was some kind of squabble between them and their publisher. They pretended to stop working on the game until their contract expired, which of course is... rather dubious behavior. It's the kind of shit Valve pulled with Vivendi back in the day and it deserves quite a bit of condemnation.

From the sound of it, Agony was one of those projects that was designed for PC and then got derailed by the need for console ports. Not unlike some other Polish games. The Unrated version was eventually released for PC, and is still being actively developed. They've even gone the extra mile and are currently (apparently) working to backport the improvement graphics and gameplay to the existing console versions, but without the content that is only in the Steam version because Valve decided to relax their rules. While they behaved poorly towards their publisher, they have behaved fairly well towards their customers.
Can you shed some light on how Agony Unrated compares to the original release ?, I wanted to try it out but a friend who admittedly played only the original advised me otherwise, though the Unrated version seems to have a far better reviews, but I want to be sure.
The changelog for Unrated (not including the three patches since release) is:
  • Improved quality of character models and textures,
  • New types of threats - Traps,
  • New types of environmental threats,
  • New types of static opponents,
  • A new, more extensive and useful character development system,
  • Volumetric lighting,
  • Normal Mode and Hard Mode with more opponents and puzzles,
  • Completely new type of environment - the Forest, added to the procedurally generated Agony Mode, which now also includes additional traps and boss fights,
  • 8 different endings in the Story Mode,
  • Possibility to follow the story mode as a Sukkub,
  • Sukkub Mode and Agony Mode are unlocked at the first start of the game,
  • Many new, uncensored scenes,
  • Black and red image filter, inspired by the Agony trailers,
  • World map and minimap,
  • The possibility of setting up a fire and killing some opponents as a martyr,
  • Sacrificial altars,
  • New and modified paths for the player,
  • Numerous technical improvements to the basic version of the game and much more.
It goes without saying that adding a minimap to a game notorious for having confusing level design and also overhauling said level design would improve the quality of the experience. The graphical overhauls, QoL improvements, and mechanical refinements are largely why the new version has such a spike in positive reviews.

Speaking personally, I would not recommend playing Agony. I think the game is incredibly poor taste. Sex and violence for the sake of sex and violence with content so strong I'm surprised the Australian government hasn't tried to get Valve to remove the game from sale in Australia. But it's important to bear in mind that the game was "fixed' in a general sense. The developers listened to feedback, and acted on it. The new version doesn't belong on "Worst game of 2018" lists as far as quality of mechanics goes. The original version was graphically ugly, mechanically disjointed, incredibly confusing to play, and basically a frustrating game that irritated most brave enough to try it.

One of the things that bothers me about modern gaming culture is people shitting on games that were broken at release but got fixed later. It's not the 90s anymore. Games can release as total disasters but get fixed later on. It's important to talk about games in the context of what they are (or what they can be with mods), not what they were.

These artists should move to id and work on Doom Eternal since they make a very interesting Hell. Very interesting locales sullied by bad concepts and mechanics.

I'm guessing by the hate Agony gets on here the developers were involved in some controversy?

The game pushes a very misogynist world view through its gameplay and art that caused a bit of a firestorm when it was released with gamers taking sides (as hard as that might be to believe). I don't know if Unrated changed that, I doubt it highly.

Here we seem to be wandering aimlessly killing shit as the female this time, so progress?

Developer whose first outing was a sexist piece of garbage intends to produce sequel titled Succubus. Gee whiz, I wonder what that game will be about and see how much the developers have learned from their blatant misogyny...
