The issue with Popular is that it's a bit of a gimmick song that doesn't and didn't reflect the rest of the album it was on or the way their sound would transform from there, especially Caws' vocals.
I fucking knew this would be here and I fucking knew the wrongness of this fucking take would make me go inwardly ape shitt for the rest of the day but I still entered this thread. Fuck.
I know I'm going to get a ton of hate but fuck it it's my opinion:

I bought the album on the strength of this song, but the rest really isn't very good at all. I've listened to some of their other stuff on YouTube and none that I've found is anywhere near as good.
Is there a YouTube playlist of "songs that people don't know the names of and don't want to know"... cos I wanna see that.
It's like that kid at my school that kept insisting Chop Suey was actually called "I cry when angels die". This was pre-mobile internet so it was tricky to prove him wrong on the spot.
Me reading the first page and thinking some people need to chill at other's opinions. Then I see this post. *blood boils* Nada Surf is probably in my top 3 bands. Haha. It's all good though. If you've never checked out this album give it a shot.

A lot of 70's 'classic rock' bands are like this for me, as a lot of it sounds to me like the most formulaic shit possible. Bands and artists like Free, Bad Company, Mud, Slade, Status Quo, Robert Palmer, Ted Nugent, Wild Cherry, etc. kind of suck with the exception of one or two good songs.
Yeah, implying Alien Ant Farm even has one good song could count as an insult to music itself.
I would make the same argument for Third Eye Blind, but with Jumper which is so much better than SCL it's not even funny.
duuude same. and I don't get how the hell that happens, I just cannot get into them at all besides The Pretender and Everlong.
You can not enjoy their earlier heavier albums, but there are some absolute quality songs on Floored and Lemonade and Brownies so for me you're wrong to dismiss them

I'm blending good & popular. The notion that most of the posted bands, only doing one song which is objectively good quality, is quite limited.
Ouch, that's harsh. Post-Modern Sleaze is absolutely sublime, and if you're counting later stuff and IAMX, then, well, that's a pretty deep catalogue.
Same here. Most of their other stuff is fine, and I won't shut it off if it comes on the radio or on shuffle, but outside of Everlong and The Pretender I've just never been much of a fan.
There's no way you've listened to their first three albums and concluded their only good song is Jumper or Semi Charmed Life
