On October 27, 2018, the synagogue where Bari Weiss became a bat mitzvah was the site of the deadliest attack on Jews in this country's history. For most Americans, the massacre at Tree of Life came as a total shock. But to those who have been paying attention, it was only a more violent, extreme expression of the broader trend that has been sweeping Europe for the past two decades.
Opens with White Supremacist attack but then wait...

No longer the exclusive province of the far right and far left, anti-semitism finds a home in identity politics and the reaction against identity politics, in the renewal of "America first" isolationism and the rise of one-world socialism. An ancient hatred increasingly allowed into modern political discussion, anti-semitism has been migrating toward the mainstream in dangerous ways, amplified by social media and a culture of conspiracy that threatens us all.
Doesn't mention white Nationalism once but does go off on Identity politics and socialism.

Notice how White Nationalism is only euphemistically referred to here as a reaction to Identity Politics...

it stands for "Intellectual Dark Web", ie all those insufferable assholes who think they're brave free thinkers for sitting around and "rationally" discussing topics like Maybe Black People Really Are Genetically Inferior and There Are Only Two Genders
Ohhhh ok

I know what that is but mercifully my brain has blanked it out just enough to not recognize it via acronym

Surprised she didn't say postmodern cultural marxists. These idiots always have a catch-all spook that they can never name by name.

She’s one of the worst, always attacking anybody who criticizes Israel as anti-Semitic. She is especially focued on black intellectuals and/or activists who speak up for Palestinian rights. She’s gone to great lengths to defend anything Israel does, and I mean ANYTHING. She’s got NO credibility, she’s literals a joke in most progressive circles so I’m not surprised by this at all.

This is a really elaborate way to shout "both sides!"

So basically the kind of people who think that any sort disagreement with their opinions is suppression and censorship.

I guess unless every piece of news-media and every university is blaring out their opinions non-stop, they won't be happy. Wich would be exactly what they are supposed to be against.

In fact they hate being just one player in the marketplace of ideas instead of being the sole provider. They just dress it up as suppression to be allowed to take more space from others to voice their concerns, until they become the only voice.

Where is Harris on those issues? I know he entertained Murray on his podcast and that's concerning enough, but I never seen Harris double down on race realism and the gender stuff. For example, he doesn't even address Stefan Molyneux by name for the race realism stuff, as he's one of the more infamous figures pushing that.

Not defending Harris, but I want to know if he's as "in" as others are.

In April of 2017, I published a podcast with Charles Murray, coauthor of the controversial (and endlessly misrepresented) book The Bell Curve. These are the most provocative claims in the book:
  1. Human “general intelligence” is a scientifically valid concept.
  2. IQ tests do a pretty good job of measuring it.
  3. A person’s IQ is highly predictive of his/her success in life.
  4. Mean IQ differs across populations (blacks < whites < Asians).
  5. It isn’t known to what degree differences in IQ are genetically determined, but it seems safe to say that genes play a role (and also safe to say that environment does too).
At the time Murray wrote The Bell Curve, these claims were not scientifically controversial—though taken together, they proved devastating to his reputation among nonscientists. That remains the case today. When I spoke with Murray last year, he had just been de-platformed at Middlebury College, a quarter century after his book was first published, and his host had been physically assaulted while leaving the hall. So I decided to invite him on my podcast to discuss the episode, along with the mischaracterizations of his research that gave rise to it.
Needless to say, I knew that having a friendly conversation with Murray might draw some fire my way. But that was, in part, the point. Given the viciousness with which he continues to be scapegoated—and, indeed, my own careful avoidance of him up to that moment—I felt a moral imperative to provide him some cover.

...

I did not have Charles Murray on my podcast because I was interested in intelligence differences across races. I had him on in an attempt to correct what I perceived to be a terrible injustice done to an honest scholar. Having attempted that, for better or worse, I will now move on to other topics.
...

The conversation I propose we have wouldn’t be narrowly focused on the science of intelligence. I stand by what I said in my intro to the Murray podcast: The science that I claimed was uncontroversial is, in fact, uncontroversial. What I propose we discuss is this atmosphere wherein many otherwise sane and ethical people reliably become obscurantists and attack anyone who demurs as an enemy, fit only to be silenced.

Harris thinks Murray is a fucking victim.

Harris is just "smart" enough to hide his racism behind a noble veneer of standing up against #censorship

Not to mention his visceral hatred for muslims

As for sexism

I also asked Harris at the event why the vast majority of atheists — and many of those who buy his books — are male, a topic which has prompted some to raise questions of sexism in the atheist community. Harris’ answer was both silly and then provocative.
It can only be attributed to my “overwhelming lack of sex appeal,” he said to huge laughter.
“I think it may have to do with my person slant as an author, being very critical of bad ideas. This can sound very angry to people..People just don’t like to have their ideas criticized. There’s something about that critical posture that is to some degree instrinsically male and more attractive to guys than to women,” he said. “The atheist variable just has this – it doesn’t obviously have this nurturing, coherence-building extra estrogen vibe that you would want by default if you wanted to attract as many women as men.”

The first 5 Prime Ministers of Israel were all Labour Zionists (socialists) - 30 straight years in total. There wouldn't be an Israel without them.

Blaming socialism is just intellectual laziness.

I am shocked that the person who's been giving a sopabox to racists, regressive extremists, and pro-genocide bastards on the NYT op-ed section would have such a take.

Eli Valley @elivalley

It was modeled after the photo shoot for her "She's Really Likable!" profile in Vanity Fair, which came out exactly two weeks before she joined the smear campaign to insist I not be allowed to present my art at Stanford.

I would urge everybody to read this repulsive smear-job on my work, insinuating I am a Nazi who poses an IMMINENT THREAT TO JEWS, and know that lifelong McCarthyite @bariweiss is a columnist at the New York Times and has a six-figure deal to write a book about antisemitism. https://twitter.com/bariweiss/status/1125789271959277569 …

What’s frustrating about Weiss is less that she’s an asshole, is that unlike some of the zanier “journalists” on the right (ie 99% of foxnews) that get ostracized by the rest of media, there is an apparatus in place welcomes her with open arms because she’s cool and dated Kate McKinnon, lol

Every time there’s a piece about her its always fawning; and you get the idea that because she’s high up in the nytimes its on some 80’s high school ‘jocks vs geeks’ with other writers being unusually sympathetic because they hope for a professional hookup. If i gotta read one more profile that’s like, “trust us tho, i real life she’s really really cool” im gonna shoot myself.

While its nice seeing a younger queer woman playing the role for once, she’s basically the 60 year old angry boomer demographic on the nytimes.

Only thing that helps ease the pain is she gets dunked on hard by respected journalists all the time in twitter. And the sad thing is at the end of the day she’s not a good writer, and compared to the more intellectual minded people on the right who still are wrong, she does a really shitty job defending her points.

Bari Weiss is very slow. Someday she'll catch up like she did with Trump after Charlottesville.

Never heard of the other two.

Bari Weiss knows exactly what the fuck she’s doing. It isn’t “intellectual laziness” it’s propaganda she’s writing and spreading

"Intellectual Dark Web" is too cool of a name for what these people actually are: a bunch of alt-right grifters who preach bigotry under the guise of pseudo-intellectualism. It's always amazes me that Bari Weiss still somehow has a job with the NYT.

I mean they let clown incarnate Bret Stephens produce written garbage for them too, so it's not like they're some holy palace with a few moving turd people. Gotta sneak in a few of those "actually it's [the left] that's the REAL problem" that dimwits pick up because we've done a pisspoor job creating pedagogy to make it clear most ills largely come from the conservatives and the centrists adhering to failed neoliberal concepts.

Bari Weiss is just a female Jordan Peterson: a dumb person's perceived smart person.

I always assumed the "Intellectual" part of IDW was intended to be sarcasm.
Ha! Yeah, I don't think they're that self-aware. But if it is, then the "dark web" part must be as well, since most of those folks are/were already hugely popular and not any kind of "underground" thing... like, at all.

Is Weiss the person who coined the "IDW" term, or was it someone else?

Eric Weinstein coined it, Weiss popularized it.
