fuches is definitely gonna die unless he can pull off some serious codependency shit. which is kinda the character. that homecoming desert scene doesn't really bode well for him though. felt like a send-off to me.

Stephen root is the fucking best.

I was concerned that Barry actually choked Sally when they were doing the scene.

Stephen Root doesn't get enough credit because everything and everyone in this show is so good, but he's been a solid character actor for 20 years and makes everything he's in better.

Nah I don't think he did. It seemed like just general stage directions. I'd be worried if he did it without Sally guiding his hand but I wouldn't be surprised if the coughing was acting too.
Once the scene ended the first thing Barry said to Sally was "are you OK?" and she replied affirmatively. They were both just really buying in to the performances.

Yeah, I think the direction there (like the shows, not Sally's) made it a point to show that Barry still put his arm out there for Sally to guide him to let us know he didn't lose control and that it was actually acting.

i just watched it again, you guys are right i guess owing to the fact that he put his hand out to her to initiate their acting choke that they'd practiced.. I'm still not sure he didn't scare her, though.

also the lead up includes the only look at his actual murder from last season's finale, and the horrible character reset barry went through immediately afterwards. this show.

Like others have said, the choking bit was definitely acting. Though I'm kinda waiting for Barry to not be able to handle his emotions and accidentally hurts someone (likely Sally) while performing. Just seems too fine of a line for him not to inevitably cross.

The interview with Hader this week is interesting because they added some shots and completely recut some of that right before the season started.
Collider: At the beginning of the episode Barry basically decides to spur one father figure and run right into the arms of another, but that seems easier said than done. It feels like Barry is starting to realize that the fact that he killed Moss may prevent him from truly opening up to Gene.

HADER: Yeah. It's really funny, as written initially you saw Barry and Cousineau in this big acting exercise where Barry kind of delves into his past. And to do the scene with Sam where he has to play a violent person, it was kind of flashes to Barry's life. I don't wanna tell you what they are because we might use them later, but we had these flashes to his life and his past where you kind of understand aspects of where Barry came from, and that helped him play Sam. We shot it, we edited it, and I remember Alec Berg after he finished his first cut came in and looked like he was gonna throw up. He looked sick and he just said, 'I fucked up, it doesn't work,' and I was like 'Oh I'm sure it's fine' and I watched it and I was like, 'No you didn't fuck up, we fucked up in the writing.' The scene with Barry and Fuches by the bathroom, that scene initially was under a bridge, and we shot it where it's me and Stephen and the breakup, but it was about like five different things. It wasn't just Moss, it was their past, it was all this other stuff. So even when we were shooting it we were kind of like 'This isn't really tracking.'

So it was like these two sequences that just didn't work, so we called HBO and we said, 'We need to reshoot some stuff,' and this was in February. So we need to reshoot some stuff and the show's airing in like a month. We did the reshoots in mid-March, like two weeks before we aired the first episode.

Collider: That's crazy.

HADER: (Laughs) Yeah. Alec and I sat and talked about it and what we realized was we were trying to make it about Barry's past and everything else when maybe what it wants to be is what we already have, which is 'Tell him you killed Moss.' This is a thing Alec and I run into all the time, which is you have the simple answer looking you right in the face but you need to explore all the ideas it could be, then you end up coming right back to where you started. Our initial idea was him saying, 'Did you tell him about Moss?' and Barry using killing Moss to play Sam, and so that was the initial idea and then we completely got off of it and did this whole other thing and then realized we were right the first time. So the scene with me and Stephen at the bathroom, that was a reshoot and we just made it about Moss. And then we reshot the scene with me and Henry where I come into the class workspace and say, 'Can you help me?' and then we're sitting across from each other and he says the whole thing about, 'Sam was a violent person, you were not, this is the worst thing you've ever done.'

And then onstage with Sarah, that is what we shot until I turn away. That is an edit trick where in that scene, the reset—so I turned away, and then we took that and we shot, a long time later basically, my closeup of looking down, and then we shot on a stage Barry shooting Janice. So yeah we shot all of that like March 15th or something, like one day of shooting.

Collider: I had no idea. How do you make that blend so seamlessly? Is that stressful?

HADER: No you just shoot super specific coverage, and it's actually kinda nice, you have the scene cut together so it's just putting in the stuff that's not there. You say, 'Oh I need a closeup of Barry here and it's down to three shots of Janice.' You just shoot what you need.

Collider: I did want to ask about the look on Barry's face when he kills Moss, which is almost relief of sorts. It was interesting to me because this season he seems very tortured over what happened to Moss, and connecting that with the evil nature of his deeds in Korengal, but then we finally get to see that moment when he did kill Moss and it wasn't one of anguish or regret, it was kind of like 'Okay. It's over now.'

HADER: Yeah it's like you wanna surprise people's perceptions of what was going on in Barry's head, and it's kind of like a private moment of 'You can't get me.' Because in the scene with Sally, it's him exerting his power over her through violence. You have to be able to make that work. So it's a nice moment of you think he killed Moss and he felt terrible, and it's like, 'No it's complex.' He did feel terrible, but in that moment I think there was a feeling of, 'Don't fuck with me.' In his mind, Moss had a gun on him and he gave her a clear way out. And that scene at the end of the finale last year, he's basically telling her like, 'I just don't wanna kill you.' There's no version in Barry's mind that he's ever going to prison. It's a double meaning when you watch it, like oh he's not saying 'Please no' because he doesn't wanna go to prison, he doesn't wanna kill her. So there's a little anger there of like, 'What the fuck did I tell you?' And then in the acting class, getting in touch with that side of him allows him to play Sam.

Yeah I read the choking scene as Barry going right up to almost getting pysically violent and her playing off of Barrys new found intensity.

Just got caught up on this season. The ronny/lily episode was incredible. I can't believe Hader directed that himself too, there was a lot of complicated shit going on in it!

So this worth getting into? I never finished episode 1 of Season 1 haha.
Absolutely. Caught up on the entire thing last weekend after doing the same thing you did around when Season 1 premiered. It's pitch perfect dark comedy and hysterical. Writing, direction, and humor fires on all cylinders each episode. Season 2 Episode 5 is legitimately one of the funniest episodes of anything I've seen in my entire life.

Penultimate episode tonight:
The Audition

Barry (Bill Hader) prepares for his first audition under Gene's (Henry Winkler) guidance. Sally (Sarah Goldberg) takes a stand in a meeting with a major TV producer. Noho Hank (Anthony Carrigan) bares all.

That was honestly a fantastic episode! Sally's rant was amazing, the audition Barry gets in the beginning was a great cold open! But man...looks like Gene is done. Freaking Fuches. The next Barry episode preview was perfect though.

Every single bit involving Hank's betrayal at the hands of that fucking accordion guy has gotten deep, hard belly laughs from me. This show is impeccable.

Loved every minute of this episode. First the opening scene where Barry meets Michael Cohen (who apparently isn't a crooked lawyer in this universe), to Barry and Sally's conversation, to Hank and the Chechens. But nothing came close to the last few minutes. My heart rate actually increased from the Fuches/Cousineau scene.

The funniest thing about tonight's episode is I just found out today that my mother-in-law is about to start watching this show for the only reason that the fucking Fonz is in it.
Other than that, fucking brutal way to end this episode.

Sally is such a great character too. I 100% got her frustration with Barry just Mr. Magooing his way into a lead audition while she's been struggling for so many years.

Yeah, that ending was great.

Barry just stumbling into that audition because he is tall and Sally/Gene having the incredulous reactions.

Barry not knowing a feature is a movie

The whole NoHo Hank bus escape while he is talking

Sally pouring her heart out to Barry.

A lot of great moments, really excited to see how the season wraps up.

I get that Barry stumbling into an audition for a lead role in a movie is both played for laughs and played against Sally's long path to get the relatively meager roles she's been offered. (Also combine this with the woman who does the real job of being Sally's agent, sharing the job with two fairly oblivious men, one of whom is her boss, and basically having to watch her words until they leave the room.)

And I get that Barry's dealing with a lot while he gets this offer/goes to the audition. But he doesn't really seem to care that much about it. I guess he's mainly in this for the class, and for Sally, so when an outside opportunity comes up, it's not really what he cares about, even if he has this goal to become an actor. And maybe he doesn't recognize the importance this audition should have for him, what a big deal it is, because he hasn't really been at it that long, didn't come to acting the way most people in the class have. He doesn't care so much about finding success as an actor as he does simply about escaping his other life. He finds that in the theater, maybe he hasn't really thought about what comes next.

The other thought I had was that Barry has zero reaction to Sally's venting/rant/frustration. Like he's not even registering any of it. I haven't rewatched the first season, but this has happened before, right? One day, he'll be incredibly supportive and encouraging to Sally. The next, he's just a blank wall.

I would applaud their bold willingness to kill off Gene, but damn, that would be a huge blow to the show's cast ensemble. Winkler is fantastic in this role.

Plus they never really went anywhere with the estranged son subplot.

The delivery of that line directly after Sally opens up to tell Barry how frustrating it is to work so hard at something only for him to fall into it had me cracking up!!!! I can't wait for the finale! What a cliff hanger!
