That is a very smart and effective protest tool.
I can absolutely imagine Disney exec being shown CNN/Fortune/etc... articles about Disney, children and gambling which resulted in a nasty call to EA. I am sure there are all kinds of clauses in the contract that would ensure that the brand does not get demolished. Wasnt there also news that one of European countries was going to investigate Overwatch/Battlefront for gambling? This is not the sort of shit that Disney would ever want to hit the news. So quite a great job by Reddit. Also, terrible job by EA PR and whoever created this ill-considered system.

Let's see how it will workout next couple of months. If they are smart, then when they return MTX to the game, they will be mostly for cosmetics, or maybe XP doublers or something like that (i.e. MS Xbone backtrack). If they are dumb, then they will shove that shit back in there and even bigger screams will be going on.

The funny thing is, I've been trying out the multiplayer today, and the game is good.

But they nearly let greed sink it.

Those that did already purchase crystal though are kicking my ass, so I'm happy to see a turn towards a more even playing field... for now.

Don't ever listen to the shills that called everyone crybabies and claimed nothing was going to change anyways, and you didn't have a right to complain about the p2w system without playing the game.

Y'all did great!

Overwatch is shitty too, lets not kid ourselves. F2P money-making practises in a £50 game are bullshit, even if it's for "cosmetics only".

It's not even close to a victory. People ITT have already been tricked in to thinking EA are doing a 180 and they're throwing money at the screen to buy the game.
Ideally, we'd prefer all of this to have never have happened in the first place. Nothing they do will ever alleviate the fact this shit was in the game at any point.

You have every right not to buy the game and be distrustful. Personally, I never had interest because I'm not a fan of EA and I think their games are shit.

They really need to start giving out crafting points at the end of every match alongside credits right away. Right now crafting points are only in crates and you need them to unlock specific gear rather than playing the odds.

That doesn't change my question - why do you, as a specific consumer, care what other people think about a game, aside from one of the two fears (less people buying and playing = less fun/variety for you, and/or not getting continued support/sequel) I mentioned earlier?

Granted, both of the above are valid concerns, but it's not like papa EA is someone you need to step up to the plate for. They pay people to do that for them.
like I said, for people who are on the fence about buying it matters a lot what other reviews are saying about the game...are you saying that you buy every game to decide if you like it or not?...

Guys, this is good news.

Some damn cynical fucks in here.

Before: Lol fuck off EA.
Now: Lol fuck off EA.

That is is about as much as we possibly could have expected this early in the game given the circumstances.

Given that there's no gameplay reason for needing every skin, it doesn't really matter to me. Also given the support Blizzard has shown for the game and will continue to show as they push heavily into eSports, I'm cool with it. I think there's a lot to be said about boxes in general; opaque odds, marketed at children, designed to be addicting etc... In an ideal world, they wouldn't exist. But for now, I'm happy to see the community come together to dunk on a new overreach by EA.
I find it amusing how people distinguish Blizzard from Activision when it suits their narrative and the games they like. They are, after all, one and the same. Good guy Blizzard though.

Why are the cosmetics only in quotations? It is literally cosmetics only and have no effect on the game. The same is not true for the vast majority of f2p games or BF2 before this update.
Because everybody uses the excuse of "it's only cosmetics" when lootboxes are crammed in to games where they shouldn't be i.e. any game that isn't F2P.

They're not even in the same universe of shit. It's like a toilet someone forgot to flush versus being strapped into a human caterpillar.
They're still shit though. Nobody is saying it's as bad as Star Wars's BS. It ain't right though.

I'm never supporting a game that has better abilities and weapons as you rank up again. Uncharted 4 and the original battlefront will be my last.

Would have never thought this would happen from EA
It would not have happened if the game was about anything other than Star Wars. Disney is the reason that EA responded.

If Disney does the smart thing and finds a way to take the license away from EA I will buy stock in the company as a token of gratitude. I'm that desperate for Star Wars to be taken away from them.

Sorry but I don't share your enthusiasm. Them telling everyone that they've temp turned off buying crystals until they can do whatever is not some ray of sunshine that tells me it's all gonna be better. It tells me they were under the gun for obvious reasons and had to try and fool some of the community - which looks to have worked based on comments in here and reddit.

You see, gamers. We ultimately have the power. Let this serve as a lesson to the entire industry.

That's right, motherfuckers. Be scared. We own you.

Edit

And if EA thinks they can pull a fast one later on, just raise hell again. They're not off the hook yet.
You’re still a hamster in their money wheel, whether you buy EA or some other company. Games are made with the intention of addicting you and making you spend more money, and you’ve been on the hook and fully submerged for a while. While you’re being a Badass Gamer, CEOs are just patting your head and lining their pockets, even if they have to delay the growth of MTX by a month or two.

They flicked off the switch with the MTs due to the backlash and they will turn it on again. Players WILL come back if the offer is good (see, Diablo 3) but right now it's a shitshow. DON'T FALL FOR THE PR

The original context of my quote was in reference to user reviews, not something like Gamepot or IGN (which can choose or choose not to adjust their score once the changes are more clear - EA doesn't automatically get a free pass because they backtracked).

And unless something's a universal darling, user reviews are trolled so often that they're hardly something I would take at face value for a true collective opinion. That may or may not be common knowledge on the internet, I suppose, but I can't imagine it would necessarily be someone's first choice for helping them decide to pick up the game, as opposed to looking at youtube/twitch or the like.

Thats where you're wrong apparently, people have been batting for papa EA all week.

Don't ask me why
Yeah, I know - I get enjoyment (or fanboyism, call it what you will) of Star Wars and/or the previous game as having some people still want to play the game regardless of what's in it, but some of the stuff I've been seeing has been alternating between bemoaning the criticisms and/or dismissing them entirely has been eyebrow-raising.

Clearly they should have reinvented the entire progression system in under a week while simultaneously dealing with making a launch happen. /s

I'm curious to see what changes they make for sure. Game is so fun. Shame that they had to botch this aspect.

sounds like they're just turning the mtx off for now to avoid the backlash and once people buy the trojan hor... I mean game, they will introduce them again

It's a smokescreen, just a delay of the shitty business practices so they can say they listened to the audience. If you think this is good news, you're a mark.

We live in a capitalistic hellscape where everything is a constant attempt to fuck you over and there is no such thing as being too cynical.

This shit in games needs to be gone for good. Hopefully this will be a wake up call for the industry and people making decisions.

I’m tempted to buy this because of Star Wars but will hold off.

This sums up my thoughts perfectly. How they reintroduce the whole system will make or break them. The backlash they will get it they bring it back and it's the same will be historic. I can't see that happening. It'll be changed. Likely cosmetic and maybe double xp only like you said. And I bet they go back to the drawing board on how the card system works with the progression system currently.

I think in the interim, they really need to increase the amount of credits you get per match, add in better skill multipliers to that post match credit amount, and like SG-17 said, add crafting parts to the payout after a match. That alone would help this game's reception. They just need to DO something... And quick.

If they come back as cosmetic only that'll be an improvement, slightly. I still give no quarter to cosmetic lootboxes, it still the same turd just polished more.

Lootboxes are a symptom of a systematic disease in the industry.

If EA seems to be fixing up the gameplay / unlocks I'll check in, but not until then. If they barely make any chances and reintroduce P2W nothing will have changed.

2017 has been amazing for games so it'll be nothing to hold off or never buy this game.

I love how you think I'm buying this game or any game with invasive, game breaking pay to win mechanics.

I'm sure somebody with a Star Wars avatar can be trusted to be 100% impartial on this matter

Well I think the vast majority of gamers disagree with you seeing as some of the most popular games in the world do cosmetic only lootboxes: Overwatch, PUBG, CS:GO, Rocket League, etc. I mean the list is huge and it's pretty safe to say most gamers don't mind cosmetic only lootboxes, there's a reason why there was a huge outroar against BF2 but not much against these other games.

I don't know why anybody is praising EA for this. They're just turning if off now since it's the holidays. It'll be back on in January.

I assume this was all planned. But the grind is still ridiculously off putting.

If I want to grind to get a sense of pride and accomplishment I'd just sub to an MMO. Not like I'm currently paying sub to FFXIV or anything.

What a shit show.

EA only have themselves to blame for this lol.

The thing is that the game is really good and fun to play. Way better than SWBF1 but no one cares because EA decided to be a bunch of greedy assholes and piss everyone off.

Aren't people playing the game now? Won't they start with a huge advantage now that other people can't pay to catch up?
